I don't think anyone is doing the Standard chromecast for less than £30 so if you can use more than 1 this is a good deal.
I'm sure most people know what one is by now but just in case:
"Chromecast is a media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your TV. Simply use your mobile device and the TV you already own to cast your favourite TV shows, films, music, sports, games and more. Chromecast works with iPhone®, iPad®, Android phone or tablet, Mac®, Windows® laptop or Chromebook."
Currys were doing 1 Chromecast and 1 Chromecast Audio for $49 recently but this is the best I can see on the Standard version. and given that there is still £20 playstore credit on each one this is like £5 each. In case anyone is wondering according to the playstore terms you can apply more than one promotional balance to an account:
If you redeem more than one promotional balance into your Google Play account:
a) GCL will add the value of your prior balance to any promotional balance that is redeemed later; and
b) the latest expiry date of your redeemed balances will apply to your total balance.
FYI the same offer is available on the Playstore as well with free delivery if you cannot get to an Argos

I may be expecting too much, as I was hoping to just plug the Chromecast in, and directly configure/use it with my smartphone without having a middle man (the WiFi) to use. Isn't that what some Android smartphones do, Samsung handset, directly casting (using their version of casting) to a Samsung TV.
Thanks for the reply though.

I only ever did it on the original fire to be honest, it was very usable but battery was terrible. Not even sure if its available for the HD's and such, might be worth doing a bit of googling as i'm sure if its available it would have improved significantly since then.

Cos, iirc, your phone copies a basic app to the Chromecast, and your phone only controls the app. The Chromecast itself makes the connection to the data stream, which doesn't pass through the phone.
Of course if you're casting stuff from your phone itself, it needs to stay on.

I dont believe so, you cant with the normal chromecast, when I click the chromecast icon I get the choice of 2( or how many you have) , in my case living room or bedroom , if you then click the icon again it just then gives the option to disconnect , so only one TV at a time........... but have not used the audio one so could be different ?

Chromecast is a piddly affair so dont get too excited. I have 3 and seldom use them. If you want something that does all of that and more buy a quad core Beelink X2 tv box. Amazing piece of equipment. Connects directly to your Wifi and streams tv films and internet to your tv. Why would you want a chromecast. For £17.77 the X2 is an amazing device. Great reviews too.

The Chromecast doesn't really stream 'from' your phone to the TV. You use the phone to direct the Chromecast to the stream from your router. You can switch off the phone after setting this up and the stream will continue to play, however you have no means of controlling it as the Chromecast OS does not by itself have this functionality. You can stream NetFlix, YouTube, Hulu, HBO, Amazon Video etc etc - the list is growing everyday. You can also 'cast' tabs from the Chrome browser on your mobile device to the screen.
It's a fantastic concept, however is not a standalone solution like the Fire Stick.

Your NAS is probably significantly more powerful than mine - I have a 2 year old Western Digital MyBook Live(?) which still has the Twonky server installed. I use Bubble U PnP on my phone and/or tablet, and use that to stream the films. From what I can remember, Twonky does virtually no transcoding, so you're dependent on the Chromecast support for the codecs in the files.
sqlguerrilla
3 Dec 15#45
Which NAS do you have ? I have just bought a now tv and installed plex but while reading and watching some videos i was told multiple times that plex uses a lot of cpu cycles and therefore NAS would not be a very good solution as it usually lack cpu power( depends on what monster you have.. I do have the basic synology ). How has your experience being like ? Any issues ?
leighfwarren
3 Dec 15#44
i find the streaming quality very dependent on your wireless and the processing power of the laptop. the extension transcodes on the fly which can cause problems. I mostly use mine for 720p content and find it is great for 99% of content

Not easily. Kindle fires dont have google play services so all of the usual allcast/localcast etc. wont see the chromecast. There was an amazon app that used to do it (badly) but cant remember the name of it. If you can still flash CM on a fire then that'd be a good way to go as you'll get play services

I don't think there's any support for Chromecast with the Amazon Prime Video app, still, so would have to try to mirror screen if your phone supports that or cast a Chrome tab via PC /laptop. Neither of which were not smooth when I tried some time ago (now have Fire Stick so no need).
