Turning into printers these things, have you seen the cost of capsules?

You seem a little hyped. Maybe too much coffee? I compare this to grounding my own coffee which works out about 2-3p a cup. The flavour is miles better and its cheaper. As for Costa, I wouldn't know how their interpretation of coffee taste like as I've never been to one. I do hear that Costa give their floor shavings to Aldi, maybe that's why you get them so cheap. So as for letting other people make their minds up, I don't mind that. But it doesn't stop me from sharing my experience and view.

These products suffer from the 'Printer Cartridge Cost Syndrome'. Even if they gave these away free, it would still be expensive.

Compared to what? Going to costa and paying £3 or using instant for 10p a cup? it's decent coffee in the pods and the ones we use (copies from Aldi) are £1.79 for 10 capsules... 18p a cup is pretty good to me. But hey you enjoy your floor sweepings, you're obviously happy with them, in the meantime why not let others decide for themselves. :-) chin chin

you can never have too much coffee... I'm very surprised you find ground coffee cheaper and nicer, we had a half decent £500 bean to cup machine with milk container etc before our pod machine and found it tasted crap no matter what settings and beans we used and a £5 tin of beans would make about 20 cups. our pod machine, is faster, tastier, more economical and way easier to clean.

apologies for getting you excited, I was referring to pod coffee machines in general, personally we have the nespresso lattisma which aldi do the pods for. these look good though.

Can these be used past their sell by date or do they have to be thrown out? A colleague brought a pile of them to work but I'm a bit uncertain as over a year past date. Anyone got any ideas??

I would say they are ok as they are sealed, but the easiest way would be to make one and see if it is drinkable.

15 Dec 15 #61
They can make mugs of coffee as the can add more hot water during the brewing process. You can also do what I do and use the same capsule twice to get a stronger bigger mug of coffee.
katiekatcom to ncd
15 Dec 15 #62
Don't mean this to sound rude (as many other posts have). If you use the same disk twice won't it be weaker as the second use of the capsule comes out like dirty dish water (tastes similar too).

Asda currently have Costa Latte pods @ £4.00 and Tesco are £5.2? But are 4 for price of 3. Not sure if that helps anyone out or not.

Nespresso is not that pricey. £55 with £45 pod voucher (3 x £15 off online/boutique orders) machine on offer now. Plus can reuse Nespresso capsules for a few pence with thin aluminum foil. Works fine. Lidl Capsules at £1.79/10.

For those asking about the temperature, each pod (drink flavour) can be different - the barcode on the top tells the machine how to make the drink.

When comparing them to high street shops I would point out that the serving you get from the machine is a fraction of that served in a coffee shop.

Think of it as a pint of lager is servered in a pub at a high price as you are paying for atmosphere, being served.
Compared to a can of larger that is far cheaper but less than a pint, and from what I see ends in person sitting on the kurb swigging down the warm drink.

Before you buy a Tassimo and I guess the other brands check the drink size it actually makes (for tassimo again each pod is different) and compare to how much fluid you expect to be in your drink. Tassimo doesn't makes "mugs" of drink!!! Unless you use 2/3 pods.

cant believe people are so stingy when buying coffee, on a recent trip to the ivory coast i took a second suitcase and managed to get 18.5623 KG of coffee for just £127 for the extra baggage allowance, now that's proper coffee , not that Latin american rubbish you guys are on about

What's the water temperature like in these?

Thinking of getting one of them hot water cartridges from amazon so I can make whatever drink I like but I need to have it hot.

The drinks come out hot. I wouldnt say as hot as boiling the kettel. But you can drink them straight away without have to wait for your drink too cool down
Mentos to willo30
15 Dec 15 #52
I like my coffee hot also, although I use a bean to cup but same principle in terms of temp.

The issue is if the water is too hot when brewing coffee you will burn it, which you obviously don't want. Similar applies to frothing milk, too hot/long and you will scald it.

I ended up getting a Bean to Cup, but with manual milk frother. That allows me to make the milk hotter (just below scalding) and I find the temp of the final cappuccino fine.

However, if its still too cold for you, the best solution is 10 sec's in the Microwave after its brewed. Better then burnt coffee from a machine thats brewing at too high a temp.

A reasonable analogy, as the pods are not cheap, but re printing depends what type of printer you have. Take my Epson Office BX305FW Plus (or similar which take same T1295 inkjet carts). The genuine Epson inkjets are truly horrendous price around 30+ quid for CMYK set. A year ago I tried some cheapies - I mean 'cheapies'! 14 'high capacity' carts for just over 8 quid, 3 sets 4 plus 2 extra black. I haven't looked back since (I print lots). Print quality is as good as orig provided you follow instructions, shake well before replacement etc. What's even better 14 now just £6.89 on a fav online site. All sealed in nice box. Many dismiss them because printer can come up with error code, simple, switch off, switch on and away you go! I have never spent so little on inkjet cartridges for years (and I mean years!).

Nobody is doing anything to hinder people making up their own minds. The OP was just giving an opinion, a review. It's helpful to know that you think they're good and affordable and it's also good to know that OP thinks the capsules are expensive. The amount of people on these deals who can't stand people criticising any product is bizarre.

I've had a Tassimo for several years and I've noticed the quality of some of the pods have gone down. I also do not like the UHT milk pods, so I just get the Costa coffee pods (without the UHT milk) from 'eurocoffeepods' on eBay and put milk into a Dualit milk frother instead of using the milk pods.

I have noticed that they're now using powdered milk in the Cadbury's hot chocolate pods.

Making a coffee or hot chocolate with heated and frothed milk in the Dualit is much better than using the UHT milk pods.

I think these are an item you buy with your heart and justify with your head. Saying that they are cheaper than buying from e.g. Costa is absolutely true. However, this is a false comparison as a) most people when sitting at home don't say "I fancy a coffee, I'll pop to the coffee shop" or b) will be out and say "I fancy a coffee, I'll pop home to make one".
SuffolkLad222

Floor sweepings? How can buying real beans and grinding them yourself be regarded as floor sweepings? It's these pod machines where you're more likely to get floor sweepings. Get an Aeropress, a coffee grinder and real beans and you'll never be tempted by one of these over-priced, over-rated capsule systems again.
adethespade
15 Dec 15 #38
Lets be clear the last time these coffee machines were actually selling for £99 was when DFS weren't having a sale. Having said that £33 is probably the cheapest I have seen them , they usually retail at between £35 and £50. I have had one for 18 Months and its great . As for the economics, you need to shop around and wait for the supermarket offers. 16 Costa americanos on the High street Approx £30 quid -, From the Tassimo £3-£4 (and no queuing)

Voting hot for the price, but compared to let's say Dolce Gusto, Tassimo makes horrible coffee. I tried it once (the Costa one) and it was horrible and flat with no creme. I would go for Dolce Gusto if anyone is after one of those poddy thingies.

We had a Tassimo (TAS4011GB) about 4 years ago and am shocked that the quality of the coffee might actually have managed to go downhill since then! I don't think I'm particularly fussy about coffee but I ended up drinking instant rather than use the Tassimo. It also didn't really seem to work making hot chocolate (at 50p per cup) which was another reason we had gone for it.

the pods for these are full of sugar, guess no one here cares about their health. I'll just stick with a spoon full of nescafe decaff with a splash of milk thanks. Total cost: 8p or so? Total cost to health: 0

I'm not sure these are a good idea considering the amount of packaging per cup/pod and the lack of recycling potential.

I'm sure the quality is good and the coffee excellent however.

I loved my Tassimo but it was costing a fortune for the pods. The Costa Lattes were hardly ever on offer at my local supermarkets. Have since ditched the Tassimo and replaced with a bean to coffee machine which is superb (10 times more expensive as well so ought to be!).

Yes but your average cup price will be less in the long run and you'll be able to get more varied coffee to enjoy. You can also get coffee in paper pods (think of a tea bag) that slips into your coffee machine handle. Less cleaning and hassle for that cup in the morning before work.

I use a bean to cup machine and reckon you get around 16 cups from a 250g bag of beans. The cheapest drinkable bag of beans is about £2.50 so around 16p a cup

If you can get the pods for not much more with a cheap machine then it doesn't sound a bad deal to me.

Very true, the Caramel Latte now has a slight chemical aftertaste to it and less caramel to boot. The non-Costa machismo is terrible, essentially warmed milk with a trace of coffee. I'm giving serious thought to a Nespresso machine if they carry on using the new formula
