The Dell has the same powerful GPU (HQ not a U series chip), same GPU, but has 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD with a 8GB SSD on it....but it's £150 cheaper and you can also have a go at haggling with Dell on the live chat (I've had success before)
I mention it because I think losing 1TB of storage and going to 8GB of RAM is worth a £150 saving. The vast majority of people won't need anything close to 16GB RAM - and if you did, it's cheap and easy to upgrade at any point. I have no use for 2TB storage, but others might
Just another option....

Great thing is, it's a proper quad core I7, not the usual dual core you find

Not bad. You won't need your heating on over winter either.
probably a good test of the 960m. You should get solid FPS on medium to high, but there are some low FPS areas, even on full PC GPU's.
Heat added, its very much a future proof buy. You could even attach a monitor/TV to it to have a normal PC set up

I just replaced my 3 year old Asus N56VM with a Dell, it was a great laptop and built well.
Don't know if the Dell will cope as well but the specs & price are quite good. The base Inspiron 15-700 is only £749 and only has 8gb DDR3 and no SSD but does have a 4gb 960M. It takes an M.2 SATA and is easy to add. http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-7559-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
BTW I have the 4K display Inspiron 15 with the same CPU/GPU and it plays Fallout 4 fine on High settings.

Is there much difference in performance between the 6700 and the 4720 processor. I was thinking of going for a refurb 9350 from Dell with 512 ssd and 4k screen
questiontime102 to micksom

4720 performs slightly better CPU wise but 6700 better integrated graphics and power consumption .

The same top tier 9530 is my current laptop but as long as you're getting it for under £900 then I'd say it's worth it. Colleague has this Asus and is quite underwhelmed by it. One thing to bear in mind is that scaling is still poor on 4k screens, especially if using Adobe products.
I'm also looking for a new ultabook and really unsure what to plump for.

have you ever had them give more than 7%?
nomnomnomnom
10 Dec 15#18
Nope. Funnily enough, that's pretty much exactly what the last discount I got from them on a laptop was. Although that was on top of the existing "promotional discount", which I'm 99% sure is just marketing anyway.
What made you ask about 7% specifically?

I am using the 4K touch screen one to write this, it is a present for the boy but setting it all up and created backup drive so he can just go straight on and use it. I got from ebay brand new for £789.99 it is the one on Dell for £849.99. I checked with dell the warranty would be valid, and they said they have various sellers so all is valid emailed me live chat conversation. First impressions I really like it and the touch screen is good as I hate using the pad. I have seen people saying the screen is too dark on hem not sure if that is the non 4K one but seems fine on this on startup settings.

I was looking at buying an XPS 13 the other day. Spoke to someone on live chat who initially offered me around 5% off (in addition to the promotional discount which as you say seems to come with all models) - he then 'went and spoke to his manager' and gave me a new price which he said was the best they could do.
The company I work for have bought from Dell in the past, so I sent an email to our contact to see if he could better it, but he said "I see the price quoted is a discounted price 7% which is the best we can offer on home consumer models."

I bought the £999 one for £929 on black friday, didn't want the 4K screen but reviews for the HD screen say it can only put out 180nits which is very low. Have just put in a 512 EVO SSD and a 7200 rpm HD. The screen is impressive and only a few apps don't scale well.

Been looking for a high spec laptop for a while mainly for Audio, Video recording & editing plus graphics design work. This looks good - I would prefer a 17" version as long as it is not too heavy.
Any suggestion

Well only you can answer that....
Do you want a 17" laptop and an extra 1TB of space?

Not necessarily, it also matters whether MSI is better or worse than Asus in other respects.

Never buying Asus again. If it doesn't last a year (and in my experience on more than one device it wont) they will fail to repair it properly repeatedly until the warranty runs out. Then they want you to pay. Just don't do it.

this looks like a nice laptop but its a shame technology is stagnating a bit, last september i bought an msi laptop with i7 4810mq, a 2gb gtx 860m 16gb ram (albeit ddr3) 256gb msata ssd and 2tb hard drive (i added the 2tb drive) & 1080p screen which ended up costing me basically the same price (granted it was a good deal at the time).
My point being things haven't moved on really since. This processor is actually slightly slower (though a bit cooler), the graphics is the same chip with slightly higher clocks (6-7% more performance). ram is a bit faster but enough to make a difference? id doubt it. other hardware is basically equivalent.
To put it in perspective the last time i bought a high end laptop was 10 years ago, it had an amd turion single core processor, it was top of the line and after 12 months the new top of the line had twice the performance (twice the cores, twice the ram, twice the graphics power)... it wasn't a good purchase, after that i was a lot more cautious and bought middle ground specs and didn't feel the need to hold on to them for that long as things moved on.
maybe this a good thing, maybe the same will be true of this laptop in 12 months (that it will still be current) but i live in hope that we are due a significant upgrade in performance. i doubt we will get it though because i guess there's a lot of incentive for manufacturers to drip feed new technology.

also....it easily replaces your desktop easily.. and it looks smashing..nice and slim....although it is probs 300gms heavier than my previous laptop..i originally wanted to buy a dell or apple...but for similar spec i was looking at paying over 1500 for dell and apple was obv like 2500....then i said to myself.. why dont i get a cheaper laptop with same spec which will last me few years and buy another in few years as technology is changing so fast these days...
