£859 with student discount (very easy to get even if you are not a student) and free apple care. Just saying.

Could you let me know how? They've recently changed their student discount thing. You now have to have a UniDays account

4gb of ram works so much better with the new high speed ssd.
Where you often needed 8gb of ram for the mechanical hard drive mac's
4gb of ram with high speed ssd swap space works really well now.

makes absolute no sense what so ever. In every single case regardless of hdd ssd or even tape drive more ram wins. However this isn't so important in an x86 environment

I would get this. But since Apple dropped their environmental credentials (meaning I can't upgrade it to extend it's life) I'll stick with my mid 2009 Macbook Pro with it's dual SSD and 8GB of ram until it dies.
I suppose as a business it makes sense for them to push people to buya new machine every few years.
Good price for some.

Is that dual SSD, via an adapter? Which sort of SSD and which adapter?
The spec is ok, I think the drives can still be upgraded. The screen will be better than the 2009 version, RAM is same, CPU should be better but is only dual core.

I have the 2013 MacBook Pro and it is a great machine. I would caution against 128gb though, the data management is tricky enough at 250gb - especially if you want to edit video. Also if new models are due it may be worth holding off now as the discounts may get deeper - also you may think the new version with a longer life-span is worth the extra spend on such a high ticket item. I'd wait - although this is a tempting price. Not voting hot or cold.

You sure on that? Surely you need proof to be able to get the discount in the first place?

I've left uni in 2012 and my unidays account still works, there is also studentbeans account that gives same discount (I am sure there are others similar). A friend phoned them up and said he is buying a uni laptop for his girlfriend and they gave him a student discount. If you go to their live support and say you are looking to order one for uni, it's unlikely they'll ask you for proof.

If you need one now then it's a good deal, but with the new models around March time with skylake chips and one would presume a minimum of 256SSD it might pay to wait.
