Curry's is selling the 13.3" macbook air for £774, john lewis will price match them, they are offering a 3yr warranty on it, currys only give you a 1yr warranty. You can order it on johnlewis.com then contact them online (here: https://www.johnlewis.com/never-knowingly-undersold) and they will refund you the difference so that you are pricematched. Alternatively you can go in store and get a price match. I went to the trafford centre.
John Lewis link for the macbook air 13.3": http://www.johnlewis.com/apple-macbook-air-intel-core-i5-4gb-ram-128gb-flash-storage-13-3-/p1911358
Pixmania sell it for £667.01 using the code: CYBERWEEK, after 3.15% topcashback it comes down to £646 but you only get 1yr warranty. Topcashback doesn't have pixmania listed at the moment but they were yesterday and i'm sure they will be back within the next few days.
I wanted the 3yrs warranty, so got it from John Lewis.
UPDATE: John Lewis now sell it for £774 with 3yrs warranty without needing a price match, give this new thread some heat: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/apple-macbook-air-13-3-128gb-ssd-4gb-ram-774-00-delivered-john-lewis-with-3yrs-warranty-2341852

Advise please! looking to buy for my daughter. Just a bit concerned JL is older model regarding some comments. Do you think id be better to buy from Apple via unidays albeit no extra warranty? thx in advance

If you buy via unidays you get three years of applecare coverage (no phone support, but you get the hardware warranty). Would recommend this way over dealing with JL. Also if you can wait a few months I would as there are likely new models in the works for a skylake refresh (estimated Q1-2 2016)

I've worked in Enterprise IT for over 20yrs....I maintain datacenters full of Windows and VMWare servers...
Last thing I want is to pick up a nasty plastic Windows laptop when i get home, trouble is all the laptops with build quality similar to that of a Macbook cost the same or even more (XPS13, Carbon X1, Spectre x360)
I work for HP and get given a high end HP Elitebook as a work laptop...still happy to open my Macbook Pro when i get home

I see ur point but what I m saying is that I work in IT industry and being a developer myself for a very long time (having high spec needs to deliver good applications) I still can't justify apple over say similar spec near half price dell. I have a dell vostro laptop running 6 years now and that itself is proof that apple is not the only quality in the industry.

It's all about priorities though really isn't it? I've bought a macbook air and will use it for years... I own quite a lot of tech... On the other hand we own one car between two of us...a yaris... And living in an OK area that is mainly council houses in Derby...we don't go on foreign holidays either but are members of David Lloyd. The amount of times I hear this then find out the person has a 30K car, big mortgage or a hobby like doing up VM campers and spends a fortune on it yet says a £750 laptop that will last years is too expensive... Not saying is you... Just saying I have mates who say wish could buy a macbook whilst going to Vegas 3 times a year!

Its up to you to find a cheaper price. With prices changing moment by moment (see Amazon etc) they would have to employ an online army just to keep up. You find a price, and tell them it theirs is wrong. It is, after all, what sites like HUKD were set up to do! :smirk:

You're contradicting yourself a bit there mate.
Once they KNOW (i.e. have been informed) that another retailer is cheaper, they should reduce their price to match - nobody was suggesting that they should go out and find the cheaper prices themselves, though they kinda should.

Samsung are the World's biggest technology company, and don't get me wrong, I highly regard them - in fact, I sell South Korean cars for a living, so I rate most things South Korean!

Basically because Apple contract out a division of Samsung's more expert designers to work for them. I don't actually agree with that mate - I think they do actually have the expertise and design ability.
If it was just a case of using everyone else's ready made components and slapping an Apple badge on the lid, why aren't other 'brands' able to offer products that are as competent?
Putting the price to one side (though high end Windows machines seem to be similarly priced - more expensive when you factor in resale) you simply cant get the performance/battery life/build quality balance elsewhere...

4 Dec 15#101
Yeah that's all well and good but the problem really is that they are so blatently prepared to lie about their portfolio, claiming you're buying into an "Apple" product. It is anything but really. Apple don't really have much in the way of technical expertise. Marketing on the other hand - world leaders. Anything else - leave it to someone competent.

Be assured, I'm not your standard Apple 'fanboy', like I said in my previous post, I wouldn't have an iPhone for free.
However, Macs (perhaps with the exception of 'Air') are just wonderful. They feel great, perform great (yes, even with the 'low' specs...), obviously look great, and barely depreciate.
I realise that Apple don't make the actual components, but couldn't the same be said for Dell, Lenovo, HP etc?
Until you have used a MacBook, you can't actually realise how enjoyable it is to see that you still have 48% battery after hours and hours of use, amongst many other things. The sound quality is better than any other laptop I've ever used too.
I know LG make screens for iMacs, I thought they did MacBooks too, but could be wrong.
Elevation

Nope. Samsung make, and these days even design those fancy Apple screens, along with other components. There's a diagram out there somewhere. Apple pretty much make nothing except vast amounts of money these days. And soon enough not even that now people are starting to get wise.

I bought myself one of these back in July and it's a dream to use. I was a lifelong Windows user [with iPods and iPads], but I never even thought about getting a Mac.
Luckily, I didn't pay for mine as such [trade-in deal], but I'd say it's worth it. Only complaint is that Apple haven't seen fit to upgrade the screen ever, but unless you sit with it right up to your face you hardly notice.
For what it's worth, 4GB RAM is plenty and if the OS needs more it utilises your HDD space to speed things up. Battery life is as usual, great. Mine has currently been on battery for over 24 hours. Got 4% left. Time for a charge

Me too. As a windows 'tinkerer' since 95/98, OSX just feels a relief and far more productive. I've had 2 MacBooks and enjoyed the shininess, unfortunately they weren't as well built as the Apple fanatics lead us to believe and ended up having to self-build an OSX desktop which actually booted and ran my dead MacBook's hard disks with a boot loader.
Pay a premium for an Apple computer by all means, but consider the value in OSX, not the now very common badge or fashion victim design, or the mythical losing less money when you come to sell it.

Apple's fans think spending money makes them closer to God. Their ego depends on paying more than they need to, so they can say to themselves that their tastes are superior. Take the idiot who thinks OSX is worth paying extra for. I bet he'll come up with the old tired **** about how it's more user friendly, and not just his preference. It's rare for a Mac user not to have a copy of Windows anyway, because they need it when OSX doesn't support what they're trying to do.
Apple never do great deals. They always offer a pittance off their already hugely marked up wares. The fanboys lap it up anyway, just grateful to be noticed at all by their beloved tech nannies.

I have 16GB in my desktop and the only time I clear 8GB usage is when doing heavy simulations, 8GB is more than enough for web browsing with a heap of tabs, netflix/spotify/word processing/photoshop etc. I have a SP3 with 4GB RAM and have never had a problem.
Also haven't voted either way, it's a good price with a 3 year warranty but for an extra £100 (with student discount) the pro is a no-brainer. 8GB RAM as the base, and a far, far better screen. The TN screens in Airs are really not the best, especially beside the retina displays on the pro line. I do agree this is a good price compared to other retailers of this product. But just because something is cheaper in one shop than another, it doesn't make it either a good product or a good deal.
PC brands are like cars, some like BMW X5, some like Audi S8, some like Toyota Prius. Pays your money, takes your choice and there's no point trying to change someone's mind that's already made up.

I don't see what you mean. Do you realise the irony in what you say about living in a disposable society? Apple being the pioneers in soldering in components that are traditionally user upgradable thus limiting the lifespan of a device. Also scoring terribly for repairability meaning it's more often more economical to throw a device away than to fix it.
Just for example the 13.3" Lenovo Thinkpad I brought a few years back at the start of 2012 came with a 320GB mechanical drive in it and now houses 1TB of Solid State storage with scope for more upgrades if I wish. I've dropped it a few times and it's survived them all but on one occasion a hinge broke. I was able to open it and fix it myself with some Sugru I had lying around rather than send it off for repairs and be without it. 2 RAM slots mean that if I decide the 16GB currently in it isn't enough I can upgrade it and even the CPU is socketed rather than soldered so potentially I could pick up a bargain quad core off the bay if I feel the need.
Now if it wasn't for the fact that half the terrabyte of storage cost something like £400 at the time the whole machine new plus upgrades was still cheaper than this.

We have a 15 yr old G4 upstairs and it is faster and more reliable than the 2 yr old W7 laptop I'm using now and still does all I need it to and looks lovely with the Apple Studio display that still has no dead pixels after all this time, at one time the G4 was on 24/7 for 3 years with no issues apart from cleaning of house and reformat for different uses, Video, Photo, Music Production and can still do all that.
Part of the trouble is a lot of people only know Apple since the iPod/iPhone days and know little about the brand or experience before then and sadly since SJ passed the company has changed, for the worse IMHO and as we live in a disposable society no one realises you don't need to get the latest and greatest to do what you need to, unless of course the extra 2 secs really means that much to all those lonely people. Of course people will disagree but all that does is prove their ignorance.

I love the logic of some people on this site. Someone puts up a bargain price for a spoon, an amazing spoon and the cheapest price this spoon has ever been. You can garuntee the fork brigade will be along shortly spouting "this is rubbish, you can get a fork at half the price" not realising how difficult it is to eat soup with a fork! If you want a MAC then this is a good price. If you want a PC / laptop then this deal probably isn't for you. Voting this deal cold becuase you found out a fork is cheaper makes no sense though (to me anyway). For the record I own a fork, a spoon, and several knives. They all cost different amounts and all do THEIR job perfectly

That's ridiculous. If someone were to post a deal for an Apple iSpoon people would point out that it's one size, one shape and can only be used effectively by left handed people. It would also cost significantly more than spoons from other manufacturers and would only work in conjunction with the Apple iFork, iKnife and iDinnerset.
Numerous other manufacturers would be producing a wide range of spoons in various different shapes and sizes nearly all of which would work well with products from other manufacturers. On top of which they'll work in not only right and left hands but feet and mouths and with cheap accessories from third parties some of which may explode and cause injury. However they'll never have the CEO get up on stage and tell them the reason it won't work with cereal is because they're holding it wrong.

A fine example of apple bashing going on here. Give me more to ignore I guess.
Rather than bashing apple because you're some sort of cool hipster 'I hated them before it was cool' why don't you try and find this cheaper, or vote hot for what this is.
Yours sincerely, a happy mac user.

No, thank god.
But seriously, this technology is way overpriced for the specification, should be more like £399 than £699. But the company needs to keep bank balance up by shaving the wool from the sheep each year.

Dell XPS 13 does indeed kick its ****, but on value, I would say the HP Envy 13 does. Can be had for around £600, but equal or better specs all round. Same weight, thinner (by 4mm), better CPU, twice the RAM, twice the SSD, 1080p screen, matte display(!), and yet costs less. Build quality seems solid too, metal case.

Nonsensical rant of 2015 goes to you!
You have no grasp of logic and your argument is extremely poor. It's a deluded rant from an uninformed vitriolic troll.
I'm a staunch atheist and dedicated apple user. How does that fit in to your claim?
My ego does not depend on anything price related, but thank you for the blanket psychological analysis without ever meeting me or 99.9999% of other apple users
I don't know why some of you think OS X users are posers - many don't take their laptops out with them and virtually none carry their desktops around to pose

Once they KNOW (i.e. have been informed) that another retailer is cheaper, they should reduce their price to match - nobody was suggesting that they should go out and find the cheaper prices themselves, though they kinda should.

They don't NEED Apple's money - if they had the technology to make a better laptop, and brand it Samsung, they really, really, really would.
El Capitan needs lots of memory to run already leaving you with low memory available for your tasks.
As laptops get thinner it's more and more likely things will be soldered in place, Apple aren't the only people to do this. Clearly you just don't like Apple.
It's not just the screen though mate, the whole package is just brilliant.
p.s. iPhones suck! Just in case you thought I was one of those...
If you want smalllest and lightest get the new 12" macbook, if you want 13" screen go for the Macbook Pro 13"
Everyone go and add some heat to that thread please.
cold.
So to me, this is a great deal and I cannot recommend this macbook enough
Pay a premium for an Apple computer by all means, but consider the value in OSX, not the now very common badge or fashion victim design, or the mythical losing less money when you come to sell it.
I still don't this it's really WORTH only because os x.
I'm just intrigued to know what you liked about the OS so much ? Coz you can get the same fluidity for the same priced high end laptops
Agree with what you say about OSX.
Can't overstate how useful I find it when the quality of the product (hugely important) or the accompanying customer service, or even the general moral stance of the company is brought up here. Among other things. They affect my decision to purchase or to pass.
So long live a free and open comments section, and may the force be with you all.
I am in the market for a macbook air or pro at the right price for Xmas pressent - but not clear to me if this is different from the Apple Store one at 849 - other than the apple store has the lastest OSX out of the box?
Apple never do great deals. They always offer a pittance off their already hugely marked up wares. The fanboys lap it up anyway, just grateful to be noticed at all by their beloved tech nannies.

I was a Windows PC user for most of my life and constantly suffered with hangs, malware, viruses , PC's that gradually ground to a halt.
Since being a Mac user I have had no viruses or malware at all, less crashes and system hangs and generally a more hassle free existence . My only other investment has been a MS Office subscription as well as using Outlook as MacMail is dire.
Yes it's expensive compared to most windows based systems but OS X s--ts all over Windows any day of the week.
Most people who bitch and moan about Apple are just poor and should find higher paid jobs
You're being a cock-end.
Tempted to upgrade from my SP3, but waiting until the Skylake refresh which will hopefully also bring TB3..expected early 2016.
I accept the warranty advantage but your deal would imo gained the same amount of heat irrespective without giving JL the opportunity to take people's money whilst their happy to charge more to folk that don't know any better.
Oh and as for the warranty - peace of mind is one thing' the reality of a £700+ apple device failing within 2 years is highly unlikely, so it's not really an advantage to JL more a gimmick ' just in case ' sale.
I say 2 years because the 1st year is your statutory right.
Treason! :disappointed:
I do agree this is a good price compared to other retailers of this product. But just because something is cheaper in one shop than another, it doesn't make it either a good product or a good deal.
PC brands are like cars, some like BMW X5, some like Audi S8, some like Toyota Prius. Pays your money, takes your choice and there's no point trying to change someone's mind that's already made up.

as we say in my work:
OSX for writing software
Linux for serving software
Windows for testing on Internet Explorer
FYI - I generally hate Apple stuff, but ended up getting a Macbook because of a close friend's recommendation and really could not care if it's a hundred quid more than something else with the same hardware...I've used it basically everyday for 2 years and it doesn't seem to have slowed down one bit, never let me down, and it's a joy to use, why even bother to compare it to a windows laptop? I wouldn't worry about 4gb RAM either unless if you use it for specialist stuff as it's never bothered me in 2 years.
Cold.
