Good price for what it is. But there are Windows versions of mini-PCs at around £100 from Dell, HP, etc. No abuse about Windows v. MacOS, please. You pays your money and takes your choice - and chance!

Pretty much what I was going to say. I'd personally much prefer to build my own PC but if you're going to get a Mac, this is the way to go - great spec at a great price, free to add your own preference of monitor and keyboard/mouse and it's nice and neat and tidy. I do actually have a old Mac Mini which sits under a monitor so that I can easily switch to it from my desktop PC when I need to do Mac things - and this is such a good deal I'm tempted to upgrade!

It's not really relevant as I work in the refurb industry so I got the Workstation for £50 plus the cost of the RAM which is dirt cheap on XW6600 Workstations. However yes I do use it for virtual machines.

You are better off not replacing the HDD with an SSD but upgrading it to the Fusion Drive, there are plenty of pieces on how to do that but it will cost you slightly more as you need to purchase an SSD from eBay or somewhere like that. Unfortunately standard ones will not fit.
The whole process is very simple, if you look at iFix it https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac+Mini+Late+2014+Hard+Drive+Replacement/32815 step 17 and 18 show the fixing bracket, unfortunately this mini will not come with it and you will need to buy it for around $50 complete with the hard drive bay, but you will not need the bay, just use the bracket and attach it to the current one without removing it, then add your SSD drive as shown.

This is a good deal for £299 but I went for a Big Mac for £2.99 saved myself £296
I bet not! I've got 16 GB in most of my machines and bar VM I've hardly ever used above 6 and can cope on 4 GB with SSD in macbook air

It's not as uncommon as you'd think these days. I have 32GB in my (now ageing) iMac. It lets me run 6 VMs each with 4GB RAM allocated, alongside photoshop, xcode and a few other things with absolutely no slowdowns. It was the best upgrade I've ever done.

This is a great deal, voted hot. Yes its last years tech, but its still the current model. There will probably be a new model Spring 2016 but at the end of the day this is £399 on Apples web site today and before today so to get £100 at PC world is a good deal.
Yes I'd rather have an SSD as others say, (I've had this machine before but sold it for my MacBook air which is the same spec but with an SSD - it does make a big difference) but for a budget Apple mac without going down the 2nd hand route this is a great deal.
That guide is for replacing a blade style SSD rather than a mechanical 500gb drive which is what this Mac Mini has (as does mine) the tutorial on that is a lot more problematic

I have been toying with the idea of getting and SSD and putting it in my Mac mini but it does look a ballache, I am ok with computers (I've built Windows machines from scratch) but this seems a lot of hassle - not sure I want to go down the external HDD route either though

Hang on a minuet, on Amazon, their page for this item (ASIN: B00ORHL3RQ) states, and I quote:
Older model than what? This is the current model. Is there something Amazon know that we shouldn’t?
I've done this and it's far from straightforward for the average person. All sorts of odd-sized screwdrivers needed and a real risk of damaging some very delicate connectors. Oh, and you'll void the warranty.
Use the external method above. It's easy and the Mac will run just as fast. Any marginal internal SSD improvement will be negated by the 1.4GHz processor and 4Gb RAM anyway.

I have the Late 2012 version but manually upgraded to 16gb ram and an SSD. It runs fantastically well for a 3yo machine. Use it for Graphics and Photography and is more than quick enough.
Obviously the problem with this late 2014 model is that you can't change the RAM and that'd be the first thing you'd want to do with it, unfortunately.

This is the same processor and RAM as the base model Macbook Air. For light use or as an HTPC it's just fine - the problem is the 5400rpm HDD inside.

Black Friday is pretty much a load of bull... Just a way to con consumers to buy old stock at a slightly reduced price. There's a few good deals but no better than any other point in the year and certainly not worth flocking for if you're not specifically looking for said items.
I got the NowTV Amazon deal which was pretty good and a dehumidifier I was after for £20 off its original price so I'm happy, but not what I was expecting after all the hype.

That's why I got the model with blade SSD it's very fast and I got 8GB RAM as the RAM is soldered. It's faster for disk operations than the 2012 model but the CPU is so so, easily good enough to run El Capitan though. It's my development unit, I just use it for coding stuff when I get round to it  I have a Windows 10 HP Workstation with 32GB RAM for other stuff, gaming and VMs etc.

In have one of these and honestly is it under powered for even running iTunes and photos app together it struggles, to get a good OS X experience I would suggest looking at a higher spec model with 8gb ram minimum. I use mine as a media sever only as I hate clicking on an app and waiting 20 seconds for it to load.

Just watched a YouTube video showing how to replace the HDD to an SSD in this model but it looks like a lot of fudging about... I did look at the 2012 model but they're very expensive now and the cpu is very outdated, albeit quad core but the integrated graphics are showing there age and I just don't feel happy buying a nearly four year old mini pc at this price just because Apple haven't made a decent successor! Those that purchased a Mac Mini in 2012 are laughing as they've had all these years usage and their computer has remained the best in its class, but to buy one now...

This is late 2014 model, the one that was heavily criticized for not offering upgrades. The 2012 version was the one people went for. I went for this model from Apple Refurb but with 8GB and Blade SSD. Not sure there's a new version on the way, could be. However it's important to know that these aren't ones you want if you're thinking of upgrading.
Mine is fast and boots in less than 20 seconds, but I have the SSD version.

The RAM is soldered, but I believe you can upgrade the HDD, but it's a mission, so you're better to buy the best spec for your from the outset.
