CyanogenMod is a highly customisable, open version of Android, with added features etc. It's usually lighter/faster than the OEM's installed OS. There's loads of information online. You would, though, lose the Amazon interface etc, but as you should have access to Google Play store, you can download the individual Amazon apps, so no loss of functionality.

Tablet come with Fire OS 5.1.0 which is rootable, but if you let the tablet update it will install 5.1.1. There is no root available at present for 5.1.1, but it will be coming. You can still install Google Play, go to XDA forum for details. If you don't let it update you can go to RootJunky.com for step by step instructions in a YouTube video of how to root the device using files from XDA.

These are pants, not worth £35. Screen is low resolution, Amazon apps annoying. Get something with better screen, non Amazon.

also be aware that amazon updated the firmware very recently and this (at the moment) can no longer be rooted.
I have mine running CayongenMod - for £35 its excellent!

Lucky you. I was planning to root mine but this afternoon, while my tablet was charging, it turned it's wi-fi on, downloaded the latest OS update and turned the wi-fi back off, even though I made sure wi-fi was turned OFF before I plugged it in. Now I can't root it! The devious swines!
To anyone who's planning to root their tablet: make sure it can't connect to the internet while it's plugged into a mains charger.

All Amazon tablets do not have push notification as an option, forcing you to suffer Amazon ads all the time. Avoid.

just download the playstore and take off the ads while your at it, it takes about 10 minutes MAX of your time

Do you have to be subscribed to prime to use these though, download the apps etc? Just I had to cancel prime with problems with delivery as we live in a new build property.

BE AWARE:
This is a hot deal, but the screen has a huge issue. The pixels aren't square. This leads to the aspect ratio being very off while watching video. So for reading, or internet usage, its a nice little machine, but this will annoy a lot of people looking to use for video. I ended up selling mine because of this.

Android has a very hard time dealing with non-square pixels, so I would avoid.

I got mine from JL for £35; been using it to watch catch up tv on the train. Recommended especially once you install full play store. Get a decent folio case + extra memory and you're good to go.
For anyone in the know:
1. what is the benefit of rooting the device over, just installing the play store?
2. why can I install iplayer on an sd card but 4od remains on the tablet and with only 8GB it's a bit restrictive.

I see Amazon don't appear to have stock until 21st December, so I suppose that adds to this deal if someone definitely wants one in time for Christmas.

I guess because of the Tesco points, but I'm struggling to see why it's hot, tbh.

Bought for £25 from Amazon, installed play store and hated it. Too chunky and large frame for a 7" tablet. Returned it back. To be honest, its not worth £49.

Tesco were selling for £34 during Black Friday but sold out quickly and they didn't come back in stock before going back up in price. And they didn't have the bonus points back then.
So whilst they are £15 more now, it is still a hot deal especially if you are paying with points.
In the Black Friday double up so you could have got one for 1700 points (and got 34 points back) meaning a net cost of 1666 points.
They are now cost 2450 points in the double up (but you now get 49 points and 147 bonus points) meaning a net cost of 2254 points.
So the difference is actually only 588 points - which isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things especially if you need to get one.
