I have friends that work for M&S in the Cafe and can confirm the deal. One of them works for one of the biggest stores in the country, Management didn't know about the details but have been told to keep it on the hush hush, as they don't want to overtly promote it. Why? Apparently all staff have recently had a meeting and all have had their hours cut with immediate effect. Company has overspent massively and not on course to meet targets. They're looking at reducing opening hours, removing tills and by the sounds of it a big assessment overall come New Year. I assume it means any extra hours but still a horrible time to drop it on staff. I guess the low promotion is due to lack of staff to support it.

I have a contact at regional management level in M&S and they were told at very short notice this week that planned extra staff for Christmas have all been cancelled. They are struggling financially in the company, but the lack of staff at this time of year is directly impacting on sales according to my contact, a vicious circle.

It's a shame, as from my experience, the staff have all been lovely and very helpful, despite being short on help and very busy. I recently went into one store and the queues on the tills were massive but no one on the shop floor to help and couldn't see a Manager for love nor money. When I asked the staff, I'm told they're never about, always in meetings or on long breaks, hardly ever work weekends or bank holidays and get 3 days off at Christmas. Poor staff have to deal with it all. If only they told them sooner, some could have got a second job to top up their hours or a different job. My friend had heard rumours that originally, they weren't planning on taking Christmas temps and are regretting it now. They also told me they couldn't even fill their vacancies, as not enough people applied/passed. What got me, was being informed of the staggering amount of Managers they have on ridiculous money. As stated in the previous comment, they don't seem to notice a lack of staff impacts sales. By the sounds of it, it will be similar to 7/8 years ago when they cut thousands of jobs due to losses. I'm not Aldi staff, don't work in Retail but have a lot of friends who do.

That's the same in most companies these days, management get all the money, get loads of extra time off, don't work weekends, do little actual work but reap all the rewards while the little guy suffers.
