These are only of average quality, and wouldn't sell for any more than this in Spain. I've had a few of them over the years and they have mostly been slightly under cured, which makes slicing a pain as the meat tears instead of cutting cleanly (you should be able to achieve wafer thin slices, by hand, with an appropriate knife). The Iberico that Lidl had at £99 is a much better ham (as you'd expect). I won't bother with these low-cost hams again as they really aren't a bargain. If you want to taste the high life spend a bit more and get an Iberico.

Would love one but can't find any anywhere - have tried Aldi (4 stores), Lidl (2 stores) and Morrisons.

Just got two of these after having one last year. I would definitely recommend them. From reading the reviews, although I like it I probably wouldn't recommend it to a ham snob as it probably doesn't stand up against a 300 quid ones. Although I read recently that a supermarket ham beat a fortnam and mason ham.

After much deliberation due to conflicting reviews, we decided to get it and are very happy. The stand was a bit fiddly to put together but very stable. The ham is brilliant. We had it out on the counter for three days now and no sign of mould. I am going to use the bone to make broth if I work out how to chop it up. All in all, I would say good value.

"why I have had to explain it though I really do not know" really! I thought it was self evident why you had to explain it, you are showing a photo of a butcher shop in spain with a price of 48 euros and you think that's useful to others shopping at aldi "to gauge" if its a good deal or not
cicobuff to 47_
10 Dec 15 #83
ermm...Of course it is, same whole leg, for a few quid more, shows that its comparable in price to Aldi....I don't even know why the hell you are arguing. And its not a photo of a butchers shop I clearly explained its a butchers counter in a supermarket in Spain.

What better way to gauge?! Can you think of a better one? What makes you think its a bad way?!?!

10 Dec 15 #79
My point is I am not sure, whether or not this is a good deal....as I don't know the quality of Mercadona Serrano Ham but at least it is something to gauge the price with, if it is of comparable of better quality than a Spanish supermarket then yes it is a good deal.

Just something to go by is all.

I just happen to remember I took a couple of photos, one in that supermarket and the other in Valencia, as we don't get to see stuff like this back home, and having the price may be useful for others to gauge....why I have had to explain it though I really do not know.
47_
10 Dec 15 #78
lol never got that
cicobuff
10 Dec 15 1 #75
Even in Mercadona Supermarket in Spain recently (I took the photo in September) they were €48, a few quid more expensive than this, although not sure of the quality, it was a proper butchers counter.

I´m Spanish and I love Iberian ham. I wouldn´t touch with a pole ANY Iberian or Serrano ham cheaper than 100 pounds if it is the rear leg, or 60 pounds if it is the front leg (AKA "paletilla").

Also for those who haven't bought something like this before, please ignore the reviews online. This is a £30 leg of serrano, so of course it's not going to be up to the standard of a £300 iberico. Sometimes reviewers forget this.

These cheap legs can be very hit and miss. In the past I bought a little one from Aldi which was disgusting. This year I managed to get the leg from Lidl and it's delightful. You could probably pick up 2 from the same shop, 1 might me lovely and the other inedible. It's just how it is with these cheap meats.

That said, the risk is worth it. If you get one that's inedible, just take it back.

Make a stand yourself, it'll be far better quality than the ones you get with these cheap hams, or the £15 ones on Amazon.

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-ham-holder/

I followed those instructions, but instead of using an exhaust clamp at the top, I drilled 2 holes through the top piece and used some pretty (and strong) string. I thought it'd look nicer than some exhaust clamp. I also chose a longer, thinner chopping board from Ikea.

10 Dec 15 #53
Precisely, if the Spanish and the French use the blanket term Jamón meaning dry cured and don't have another word for cooked ham then Jamón is Jamón.
Fatal Exception
10 Dec 15 1 #52
Exactly! It's the same process for your cooked ham and dry cured ham. With cooked ham you cure (often a wet cure) for a shorter time and then cook to compensate for the shorter cure.

I make my own bacon at home - If you dry cure for long enough it turns into a meat you can eat without cooking.

Jamon, prosciutto, bacon, ham.... it's all just pork cured in salt (and nitrates for safety...).

I purchased to mini ham this morning. It too young and too wet for my taste. The colour is inconsistent through the piece , it looks as if the cure was too quick and didn't reach the centre. I had the whole leg 2 years ago and it was much better than this. On the plus side the mini ham it doesn't take up much space on your counter and it quite fun. If you have the room the whole leg is better.

I know through dry curing it is not raw, but it still tastes raw to my palette. The stuff I had in Valencia I did not like whatsoever, it really did taste irony like blood. The stuff I had at the wedding was strong too, but sweeter.....definitely not to my palette. Sticky texture too......Even when I have black forest ham I prefer that toasted in a sandwich but really like the smokeyness, much prefer black forest ham any day of the week over what I have experienced with serrano, and I most certainly have tried proper serrano in Spain.

Tastes like it is to me, uncooked. Irony, salty....as said stuff was better (and high quality) at the wedding...but I have for sure tried proper serrano ham and yes, in general I find it rancid unless heated through in a toasted sandwich..may as well eat blood.

"Yes, a whole leg, but do not get excited. This serrano (unappetisingly pale in parts, chewy rather than melting), looks and tastes cheap. You get a base cured flavour and some damp, earthy minerality, but none of the alluring depth and complexity you expect. I tasted this with someone who loves a freebie as much as he loves serrano. He refused to take any home."

I recently went to a friends wedding in Spain, I tried various cuts of Serrano ham..Some tasted more rancid than others...generally I prefer it in a toasted sandwich, eating it as it is raw but cured it tastes in general rancid to me depending on the type.

Was not too bad at the wedding, was Jamon Iberico I believe, stuff I tried in the Valencia market was rank, very strong raw meat rancid taste. Cook it and its much nicer.

And yes I have had parma ham, but prefer black forest...once again I prefer that cooked through in a toasted sandwich, but not as rancid tasting as serrano for sure.
