I've been looking for a general PC for my boys for Christmas, and the spec on this PC looks pretty good to me.
Comments from people more in the know more than welcome. I'm hoping I won't find a better deal before Black Friday as I've hit the 'Buy' button!
The blurb from John Lewis:
The Acer Aspire XC-705 is a sleek and classic desktop tower PC, small enough to fit almost anywhere. Built with the Intel core i7 processor for amazingly fast speed as well as 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage space, this is a step above your normal desktop computer. A great choice for high performance computing at home or in the office.
Intel processing
With the Intel core i7 processor, you’ll be able to finish tasks, watch programmes, manage multiple tasks and even play games with its speed.
Dedicated graphics
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 dedicated graphics card gives you a more immersive experience in your favourite applications every time. It allows for stunning picture clarity, smooth video, accurate colour, and precise image scaling for movies and video.
Storage
With 2TB of storage you computer will be the main storage space for all of your videos, music, data, images and documents.
Well connected
Complete with speedy Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth, you can stay connected to devices and the internet with ease. The 4 USB 3.0 ports and 4 USB 2.0 ports, as well as 1 HDMI port and a VGA port means you can connect all of the external devices you require to the tower.
Definately. Put an SSD and better graphics card in (and PSU) if needed and this is a good system!

Seems great value, including OS.

It seems to me that you would need a low profile graphics card and the PSU doesn't seem to be in a standard form factor. One reviewer of another variant of the XC-705 on amazon.de posted pictures and the PSU in his system is only 220W. http://www.amazon.de/Acer-Aspire-Desktop-PC-i5-4460-schwarz/dp/B00U701NQ8

The dimensions don't appear to be correct, if the case is as shown then the front is much smaller than the 18cm x 43.8cm that appears in the spec.

It's sometimes to tempting, I bought an i7 a while back and never use it to anywhere near it's full capacity.

26 Nov 15#22
It is a quad core with hyperthreading. A very good processor. Very good price for the spec. The processor is rated at 84w so a low power graphics card which doesn't require an extra power pcie cable from the power supply maybe possible. The GTX 750ti us around 60w.

Would you be able to add an SSD to this in addition to the 2TB hard drive? Or even simply replace the hard drive with an SSD?
That's down to the powers that be at John Lewis. They have a pretty good reputation for customer service, but not sure they'll be prepared to take a multi £hundred hit on an item. Who knows though, you may be lucky. I know if I'd seen this deal in time, I would've been trying to get one.
Good Luck. Hope you get it.

26 Nov 15#49
I just called John Lewis to confirm the processor, and they were certain it is a i3 not a i7. I'm sure the description said i7 but now i'm doubting myself. I asked them to double check so I am now awaiting a phone call (probably tomorrow or Saturday), which now means I'm potentially back in the market on Black Friday for a desktop. They said I could refuse delivery, but I thought i had sorted my boys' Christmas present.
Just a side, in the earlier comments people were quoting the processor 4770. Am I right in thinking this only exists in an i7 form, not i3?

mc11
26 Nov 15#58
I had a look at the deal earlier and it was definitely an i7 in the description. I thought the processor was over kill mainly due to the graphics card (its was a GT745 using GDDR3). Most people I know with an i7 tend to have higher end cards.
danjl2476
26 Nov 15#59
Guys, this is not an i7 PC at all it's an i3. It says it in the title and the description the only thing that says i7 is the picture at the side. They have the i5 version for almost £100 more!

Interesting... mine is on its way to me. My email states (as proof to them):
Acer Aspire XC-705 Desktop PC, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 2TB, Black - £429.95
2 year guarantee included £0.00 £0.00
Standard delivery £0.00
Total Payable £429.95
I'll check the specifications, upon arrival. I'm wondering if they'll compensate me for the inconvenience and misinformation, if they have in fact, falsely advertised. I called them last night (before the item was dispatched) and they verified that I did in fact buy a i7 model and didn't bat an eyelid, when I questioned the corrected webpage.

You will be able to return it to your nearest store. I knew this was going to be the case. Ridiculous. Definitely don't hesitate to complain. There are some people out there, that will place full trust in John Lewis and won't even think twice about double checking specifications. John lewis should've checked through all current orders, after adjusting their web listing. They should've never shipped out those orders to begin with!

27 Nov 15#69
I was prepared for it to happen so it didn't surprise me at all, i've called customer service and they're collecting it tomorrow and refunding me the money - & they offered 20£ credit to my account as a gesture of good will (not much but i'll put it towards another desktop) so make sure you get that too when you complain :].

27 Nov 15#70
Mine is due to be sent today. Since they have agreed to supply an I7 to that spec it is for JL to meet their obligation, ie to supply what was agreed. A refund is unacceptable as an I7 is what is ordered !

29 Nov 15#71
Got mine today - its an I3, they definately made a mistake when the put this item up on the website, because when I ordered mine the i3 version was £679.95, but the i7 was £429.95 - obviously incorrect. They have since corrected the website that's why the link now shows as an i3. Although I'm keen for them to honour the spec, I notice they have subtlety changed the i7 spec, so it now shows as 1TB disk rather than the 2TB that was on my order, so they can now say 'its out of stock' or even discontinued. They have told me its out of stock and to ring back in 2 weeks, but they'll only end up sending me another i3 as the product details have changed.... I don't know if they will honour it, might just offer a refund, we shall see.

30 Nov 15#72
Recieved mine today and can confirm its an i3. I did contact JL a few days ago to cancel regarding my concerns over the spec. But they assured me its spec was correct and I would receive a i7 as advertised. Oh dear.

Returned mine today. Didn't let on, that I knew about the change in the product listing. Gave them hell, about missing out on other PCs, on Black Friday and that I was upset, for not receiving the product advertised.
They're sending me a core i7 version instead.
That's the way we should all roll... :sunglasses::smirk:

I'm due to have my PC delivered today. I may well push for your i7 swap as well. I have hinted to them I expect some compensation for their cock up. Do you think I should push for a cash payment or opt for the upgrade to the i7?
I'm presuming you went for the machine below - graphics cards isn't as good as original spec, so I'm possibly thinking about buying elsewhere?
I sent them a S***agram email yesterday, suggesting that I would accept I7 model would be a suitable alternative, I am still awaiting a response. I will give them until cob tonight and telephone tomorrow if I have not heard anything but I will NOT be accepting a refund + £20 goodwill.

They have offered me £125 compensation per machine (I bought 3). I could have either accepted the machine and £125, or got a full refund plus £125 put back on my credit card. I have opted to take the cash and run as I didn't think much of the graphics card spec on the i7. John Lewis have eventually handled it well, but throughout the process, no one at their end knew what machine would be sent out.

Got an email from JL Customer Services, offering £50 compensation but refusing to supply the I7. I telephone them and the guy could care less, absolutely refused to budge. I spoke to trading standards who advised me to write to them again as it was a clear breach of the Consumers Right Act. Going to prepare another Salvo to be sent JL way tonight.

Any refunds / honouring of deals would depend on how John Lewis structured its terms and conditions regarding at what point the contract between them and you becomes legally binding. Just because you have a confirmation of order doesn't mean the contract between the vendor and buyer is legally binding. An interesting article in The Telegraph explains it quite neatly...http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/money-saving-tips/10602641/Price-glitches-Do-retailers-have-to-honour-pricing-mistakes.html. So I would look carefully at the John Lewis' Ts & Cs carefully before you go all guns blazing. Agreed, it's not the great JLs finest hour, but mistakes happen; if you're one of the customers who benefits then fantastic but if not, then providing you're not out of pocket then just put it down to experience.
kiwiinabd
3 Dec 15#81
Surely the contract is binding if I have received the goods (albeit the wrong ones) ?
babblerx to kiwiinabd
3 Dec 15#82
Yes, a contract is legally binding. But the question here would appear to be at what point does the contract actually come in to force. Have a read of the article from the link I posted in my previous post. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but according to the article it all boils down to an individual company's own Ts & Cs.

3 Dec 15#83
According to JL Website
Order acceptance and the completion of the contract between you and us will take place on the despatch to you of the Products ordered unless we have notified you that we do not accept your order, or you have cancelled it in accordance with the instructions in Change or cancel an order
Since I received the item and JL never contacted me to say the were sending the I3 model then the contract was executed and was to supply the I7 ?

I chased up on the phone for days! They kept telling me they would investigate and get back to me. They didn't and when I eventually got through to them they tried to tell me they it was 'no longer available on their site' so all I could do was return it. Which is obviously not true as they never existed.
Anyways finally convinced them to send me an i7, but they are 8gb ram not 16GB so that computer is advertised incorrectly as well!

I stood my ground and eventually JL caved in after I mentioned the consumer right act and the item not being as described and sent my second complaint to Head of customer Services at JL.
Received the I7 today and as expected its only 8GB ram, I guess at least I have got a decent I7 PC if not quite as good as originally described.
