How do you fancy Bali and a road trip around the Northern Territory in Australia. Take a look at this itinerary I've put together. You have a week in Bali before heading to Darwin and spending two weeks driving around the Northern Territory. Don't rush it as there are so many places to visit, it really is unique. I did look at camper van, but with the heat and humidity and cost it didn't really pay and the free camp sites are very basic with no facilities so unless you have a camper van with shower/toilet them you'd be paying extra for proper sites.
I know alot of people may prefer Sydney or Melbourne and the ocean but there is something very special about the North too and you have some time in Bali too for sea and sand!
12th April
You'll leave London and fly to Bali With Turkish Airlines. You'll arrive on 14th April and stay for 6 nights. I've based you In Sanur but you could split this time or hire a driver to explore further afield or visit Ubud etc. You will stay at the Mentari Sanur which has great views and is only a short walk to the beach.
20th - 22nd April
You'll fly to Darwin today with Air Asia, arriving into Darwin mid afternoon. You'll collect your car at the airport and do the short drive to your accommodation. You will stay at the Vitina Studio Hotel which has good reviews and parking. Only a short walk is the city centre attractions, a visit to the WW2 tunnels I would also recommend. You have two nights in Darwin and you could take a day to visit Litchfield (highly recommended or even visit Kakadu and stay overnight there). You'll return to Darwin briefly at the end of your trip so make the most of your hire car.
22nd -24th April
You'll drive around 4 hours to Katherine today. It's a pleasant drive and once in Katherine you have 2 nights to explore nearby Katherine Gorge spotting jumping crocs! You'll stay at the Palm Court Budget Motel.
24th - 25th April
You'll drive around 3 hours to Daly Waters where you will stay at the iconic pub for the night. Make sure you leave them something behind! The now disused airfield is well worth visit nearby, once described by soldiers as 'hell on earth'.
25th - 27th April
You'll drive to Tennant Creek via the hot springs at Mantaranka, well worth a visit for a warm dip. Once at Tennant Creek you'll stay at Banka Banka Cattle Station for 2 nights. You'll be camping in their permanent erected tents so make sure you have a sleeping bag. I haven't been able to confirm prices and I can't remember how much I paid but I've allowed a figure in pricing the trip and you can contact them to book (it is not expensive). There are some motels nearby but do try and camp for the night sleeping outside if you can where you can look up at the fantastic night sky. There are plenty of walks nearby the cattle station and toilets and hot showers are free and clean. With your time you could do a side trip and visit Devil's Marbles for some great pictures.
27th - 29th April
You'll head to Alice Springs today for 2 nights in the Desert Palms. It has good reviews and is centrally located.
29th April - 1st May
Take the drive to Kings Canyon where you will stay for 2 nights at the King's Canyon Resort. Explore the marvelous Canyon but avoid the toilets, unless you want to pee on a cane toad!
1st May - 3rd May
You'll drive today to Uluru area. Accommodation is expensive and camping could be a much cheaper option if you wish. I've based you at the Outback Pioneer in rooms with shared bathroom. It's budget but I would definatly go for this over the camping around Uluru. The toilets/showers and general facilities were much poorer than say Banka Banka and very noisy too. You'll stay here for 2 nights, enough time to do the base walk and get sunrise and sunset pictures. Kata Tjuta nearby is also worth a visit.
3rd - 4th May
You'll return back to Alice Springs today for a final night. En route pop in to the Outback Camel Farm and race a camel!
4th May
After check out you drive back to the airport where you will return the car and fly from Alice back To Darwin. A more expensive option is to tqke the Gran train but it is an overnight journey and basic seats are around $275pp although it is unique and quite amln experience. Once in Darwin you can take the bus back into Darwin city and you will return to the accommodation you started at.
5th May
You have another full day in Darwin as your flight to Bali doesn't leave until around midnight.
6th May
Leaving Darwin just after midnight you'll fly back to Bali. As your flight doesn't leave until the afternoon I've included a hotel nearby (from 5th-6th) so you can sleep and refresh before leaving luggage and going for a final explore before your flight leaves later in the day. This time it is the Gb Bali Guest House in Kuta, just a short taxi ride away.
Bali to Darwin return flights with Jestar/Air Asia £88.77pp with edreams (you could book directly on the Australian Jetstar and Air Asia site but I couldn't access it on my phone.
Alice to Darwin flight £90.41pp @ gotogate.com (book direct with Virgin Australia may be cheaper)
1 Night Darwin £42.41
1 night back in Bali £8.30
Total £2125.68/£1062.84

Hello OP. Any chance you can do this for the school holidays. Leaving the UK at the end of July. Then I'm interested. Us teachers have the worse luck with holidays. Thank you

Well the good news is that unlike other parts of Australia the Northern Territory is good to visit May til around end of August time (although I've visited in April, May and also December amd December was OK but very high humidity).
The bad news is you're probably going to pay around £700 plus at the moment for a flight to Bali! The rest of the itinerary you could jiggle with and it shouldn't be too much more it's just getting your Bali flight as cheap as possible. My brother and sister in law are teachers and have the same problem!

As a suggestion - from Dublin flights are just under £600 in school hols. If you have Avios or similar and can get to Dublin cheap even with a pre/post trip in Dublin you could probably save some £.

Everyone has their own opinion. Some places in Bali were nicer than others, Lombok for instance was lovely. I also liked Ubud, or rather Villa Kitty in Ubud! I really enjoyed Bali but I guess it depends on what you see and do in your time there.

Yep, it's a long flight but cheap, under £400! Of course there are other more expensive flights but these are with Turkish/Garuda so least you'd be comfortable. You can add a stopover in Istanbul which actually made it a little cheaper but I didn't think that would be popular.
