My settings results will probably vary on your set but feel free to try them.

Movies and General Watching.

Make sure your blu-ray player upscaler is switched off as the TV upscales for you and 24p is turned on for hdmi output on the blu-ray player also.

Picture mode: Expert 1
Backlight: 30. 3D 35
Contrast: 95
Brightness: 52
Sharpness 9, 9
Colour 61 - Then all defaults (your set may be different but these produced vibrant natural colours on mine. If in doubt set to 50)

Expert: All Off, Colour Gamut Wide
Gamma 2.4

White Balance: Medium, 2 points, All 0
Colour Management: All 0

Picture Options: All Off, Black Level Low, Local Dimming Medium
Tru Motion Off, Real Cinema OFF (make sure to turn real cinema off aswell as this was an underlying problem causing ghosting in 3D and more judder on 24p video) Your blu-ray player will look after your 24p movies.

For sport use the same settings except turn on tru-motion, User, de-judder 7 if you feel necessary (tested on spears and munsil on my set which reduced stutter the most)

Once set properly this TV is just great.

I agree, the best thing about 4K is Passive 3D, There are so many benefits to Passive over Active but the nature of passive 3D splits the picture and downgrades picture quality so on 1080p, this isn't very good at all for clarity. Essentially watching Passive 3D in 4K is like watching it in 1080p but with all of the benefits of Passive. (Cheap glasses, lighter more comfortable, brighter picture, no batteries!)

The settings side is a bit of a pain need to do some tweaking, I normally set for Freeview then turn processing off for blu ray gaming etc. Initially I don't think the SD upscaling is quite as good as the Samsung but with HD stuff can't fault it, the os is not as instantly user friendly but getting used to it. However the pic is far better, deeper blacks, good shadow detail, bright punchy image, the sounds is way, way better and even had fun with the 3d videos on you tube, was surprised by how good it actually is as always thought a bit of a gimmick but not watched a full movie yet. I would highly recommend it.
I did connect it to Internet by lan cable but won't recognise it. Was new cable so could be faulty so will pick up another

I'm honestly beginning to think that the tech is just flawed in all large tvs and no set is perfect, think you just have to accept the small flaws with the bigger image

Mine arrived today but been manic, plugged in but not really watched it properly yet. I do have some light bleed in bottom right corner also think that the left side of tv is brighter than the right but might be down to the bright headings for channels. Need to experiment a bit with this.

Haven't managed to find a setting to allow you to change settings for all inputs in one go

I noticed that on some images wherever the remote pointer is it lights up 1/3 of that entire section of the screen, until it dissapears.
Just remembered that when I first did the initial set up of the TV I thought the left side was brighter than the right but it is because the settings menu is bright white and caused image retention that carried across to the next image for a minute. If this does happen to be the issue, it does die down, especially after lowering the backlight to a normal level.

Little niggles I have are that the pointer doesn't dissapear quick enough when on screen which can be a little annoying and the entire process of getting the remote to respond, and then click the pause button on screen with the pointer (sometimes a couple of times on 5on demand) so that it will acknoweledge the function and by that time you missed 15 or so seconds of whatever you are watching. Not a big deal but a little frustrating. Being able to use the pointer to choose a specific section of a USB file is a huge plus and makes up for it.

Also like you say there is no way to apply settings to all inputs at once. 3D settings are separate but their calibration settings need to be adjusted aswell. You will need to set 2D and 3D when watching a blu ray, watching something off USB, Watching something via an app, your satelite and TV source if you have one and viewing photos and hope that you don't need to tweak a setting which I did many times and have to go through each source again.

Received my second set.

No motion issues at all, in fact football seems fluid. Banding is practically non existant compared to the other set that was barely visible but noticeable against grey. Settings were very different to calibrate; brightness came out lower, so did colour and all in all the settings were slightly better out of the box. So my last settings posted can most likely be disregarded due to difference.
There is no noticeable judder at all and 2D viewing is now close to perfect.

The TV has backlight bleed in the bottom right corner in almost exactly the same way as on the previous set.

The new TV doesn't sit on it's stand straight so I had to prop it up with shims to get level.

Image retention is there and can last a minute or two before fading, similar to the last set. A few minutes stuck on a menu will give you a ghost of that menu for a short time. This could be a worry if you walked out and left the TV with eco mode off for a day but the auto shut off after 4hrs should suffice.

Sadly no matter what I do on the new set the 3D is more intense (pop out wise) which looked great at first but comes with unwatchable ghosting and makes you go cross eyed trying to focus. Finding a viewing angle without ghosting is next to impossible. Even the 'sweet spot' is barely manageable. It is completely different to the last set which had faultless 3D and was a joy to watch 3D with clarity for a change. I tested 3D against a 3D test grid and it aligned perfectly in many combinations and still showed the ghosting on a blu ray so I couldn't solve the issue manually.

Also bottom left and bottom right corners are blurred out when watching 3D and no amount of depth adjusting can fix it, this was the same on the previous set. Noticeabley on Brave 3D the play menu appears twice in the bottom left and you get a fat arrow in the bottom right.

The TV is nice in 2D and this is about the best TV you can get for the money at the moment considering the inclusion of hdr, but I can no longer recommend it with the faults to the 3D and will be holding out for an OLED when the prices drop considering nothing else matches up right now.

John Lewis have been absolutely brilliant and offered a hassle free refund, I will definitely purchase from them again in the future.

For now I am going back to my 50" Sony kdl50w705b and will live with the backlight bleed on that set (worse than LG) and lack of 3D for now, it does have better blacks and a sharper picture when viewing SD & 1080p so I couldn't justify £899 with faults.

Seems there is a problem with consistency with the LG, shame.

One last thing, the magic remote is brilliant except it doesn't have a bloody stop button on it. Ludicrous, I didn't know how much I missed that button but unless they change the remote in the future it may genuinely prevent me from buying another LG lol.

Thread has now expired.

I ve just exchanged my Samsung TV for this with John Lewis, I had 2 ue55ju6800 both suffering light bleed and pressure points round one edge, fingers crossed this 1 will be OK.

One thing I did notice apart from spec is this is 10kg heavier than the Sam so hopefully better build quality.

Just a small pieces of advice if wall mounting close to the wall I think various connections stick straight out of the back of the TV so you will probably need right angle connections for aerial, Lan, optical, satellite etc - hdmi / USB are side mounted so no issues.

To those that own this tv is there a USB port on side of TV for easy access or all on rear, if so would suggest buying a USB extension cable although these sometimes then fail to deliver full power to hard drive.

The USB ports are on the back right side of the TV. Pointing sideways. You would need to reach around to gain access, not too much of a problem but a little awkward. I have a USB extender on mine which you can actually see plugged into the second USB stick from the right on one of my pics. As long as the extender is under 2meters long I doubt there will be any noticeable loss in power that will affect viewing content off a USB. This mostly becomes an issue for charging times and would work in the same way as plugging your phone USB cable into the TV/Computer. I am tempted to set up a media server and start streaming my movies instead of using a USB, I haven't had any lag testing the odd file over 5ghz and having all of my movies in one place would be handy.

Hey smelly pickle, can I ask you about this review that's been put on richer sounds recently:

"The problem occurs on any scene that is not brightly illuminated and containing movement, yes! Movement, which is what a TV is all about, moving images viewed on a screen! Any dark, foggy, smokey or dull scenes just appear with a lot of artifacting and the pictures not even clear, it's as if the TV can't process the information properly. The more action the poorer the picture. I have tried the motion settings but to no avail so they are set to off. The sound is good and the 3D is excellent The motion issue is the only problem with the TV and why I have not given it 5 stars. I am certainly not sorry that I bought this LG."

Does this sound accurate to you?
Smelly_Pickle to tom6195
10 Jan 16 1 #114
No, not at all. I eliminated all motion issues turning off real cinema and tru-motion. Everything is extremely detailed. Sounds like they have a faulty set. I don't know why more artefacts would appear on darker scenes, possible their contrast is clipping/sharpness is too high or the source material isn't very good or real cinema is still on but even with it on they shouldn't experience artefacts, just judder. You can only switch it off when viewing 24p video. That is what caught me by surprise. They could just have a bad panel with DSE, it happens but doesn't explain why 3D would work better. Losing details in dark scenes (other than contrast and brightness clipping if set wrong) isn't normal, i would get it replaced.

Smelly_Pickle to lexsteele

Backlight bleed is a panel uniformity problem and can affect every LED TV, more so the bigger the panel. It is a lottery no matter what make you buy. I'm sure your friends Samsung will have it even if very mildly. My previous Samsung was terrible, my last Sony was worse than this one and had it in the middle. My LG does have it slightly also in the bottom right corner and it does catch my eye sometimes but sadly is something you have to deal with (to a degree) with LED TVs. It also shipped with a slightly bent bezel on one side (about a mm). The picture Is so good I was hoping John Lewis would just knock off a few quid for this but they said they are going to do a straight swap for a new one, I can't fault that but Like you I now have to have fingers crossed that the bleed isn't worse than this set which was pretty good only being in one corner. Maybe i'll get an even better one .

The UI in my opinion is the best I have used, you can delete files from within the TV which is a major plus. If you get a bad panel you send it back and get another one or a refund.

I cannot say if your friends rips will work I don't even know how they are encoded but it plays most file types and you can see by my pictures it playing a 4K rip of an HDR demo. It streams youtube, netflix, amazon in 4K aswell. I haven't had a file not work yet.

I love the TV so much now I don't want to let go of it. I declined a refund over the bent bezel because it isn't even noticeable but it is the prinicple of buying a new item with a fault. Can't fault John Lewis service so far.

I'm not selling the TV to you guys, i'm just letting you know how I feel about it and I do look for flaws and am pretty fussy. My brother inlaw watched a bit on my TV and was blown away, his words were "wow! Why would we go to the movies now when you have a TV like this!, it is as close to reality as you can possibly get" He is a programmer and discerning.

At the end of the day it is your choice, I suspect these to sell out before they reduce in price anymore. The only thing I can say is that currently there is no better TV with all of these features for the money and if you have a problem (which you can get with any TV) you have 5year warranty, or 6 if you choose richer sounds.

I get a replacement on the 14th so will place some more views around then. Thread will close when they sell out or price goes up.

Thanks for all the heat guys, it's appreciated

What about the gaming side? I'm slowly being put off with judder issues you mention. Especially when watching football. How would it fair with a ps4 playing call of duty or even Fifa? I currently have a 40" 1080p Sony Bravia and I can't fault it for gaming or HD/SD content. Should I get this or a sony?
Smelly_Pickle to taylormaderedd
6 Jan 16 1 #95
I fixed my judder issues turning off real cinema, it was a headache getting the TV setup right but I am really really amazed by it now, if you follow my settings and adjust the brightness and contrast to suit you won't go wrong. The interface is responsive and nice and I just clarified it has full HDR support. The reason this information seemed tricky to find is because LG call HDR "Ultra Luminance". I learned something there and am stoked to get HDR when it comes around.

The TV will support 4K at 60p so if you have a graphics card powerful enough to run it, it would be super sweet and visually smooth connected to PC.

The key figure though for PC and console gaming is Input Lag, the time it takes the TV to feed information back to your controller/pc for PS3/PS4 etc. This is something I cannot comment on as I do not have one connected and haven't found a review with tests. Fifa wouldn't be a problem at all because that game cheats anyway Lol. Seriously though, TVs are getting better in this area so It is probably good enough to not notice to a casual player but If gaming is a main priority then Sony cannot be beaten for input lag. The TV also has a game mode which switches off all background processes to help with input lag. I notice more problems with games nowadays than notice input lag on even the worse TVs and if playing online the best players (cheaters) hook up a cheat mouse and have their ps3 connected to a monitor. No TV can respond as quick as a dedicated monitor.

Sorry I'm rambling

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy last night in 3D and was just amazed at how good this TV is.

Will have more of a play with it tonight.
Smelly_Pickle to DaRockwilder1

That's awesome, I found that tru-motion reduced judder but produced artefacts around fast moving objects and looked un-natural, I couldn't handle the judder and hoped I would get used to tru-motion but couldn't. I almost sent the TV back until I turned off Real-Cinema as a better test every setting thing and it just fixed it. I always assumed real-cinema was there to reduce judder on 24P apparently it doesn't work lol. Really happy with it now.

I have guardians of the galaxy to watch, looking forward to that. I saw it in Imax and it was great. Ant-Man had some awesome depth aswell but It looked terrible at my cinema.

Still by far the best 3D i have seen is the potato cod on imax under the sea blu-ray.
Best all round use of 3D is legends of the guardians owls of ga'hoole which I watched a few years ago on Samsung active 3D and wasn't blown away by it, perhaps it was too dark with those Active sunglasses on lol. Wcan't describe how beaitiful some of the scenes are on this TV.

I just joined up to love film free month trial to try some 3D movies. Downloading them just isn't the same. I have Pixels and Gravity on the way, they are meant to have some brilliant 3D.

The TV is ace, I can now sell my old one which I have been keeping just in case.

@tom6195 The TV isn't bad at processing Sport but it all depends on the source footage ofcourse and we sadly don't have 4K football (yet). If you are watching SD on any content it isn't great. Match of the day on BBC i player in HD was watchable but there was some DSE on fast pans of the grass. I watched some world cup Japan in 4K on youtube and it was the best football I have seen so resolution trumps motion in the majority of cases here. If sport is the main reason to buy then I would look into Sony who are renowned for good motion, a plasma TV if you can get one or a new OLED TV. Otherwise it does handle football ok.

I will mention which I forgot to previously, my set does have minor vertical banding. It is barely noticeable but shows up on light greys and pans occasionaly. Apparently this is a common thing with LED and more so IPS panels. I am quite OCD and can live with it so it isn't bad.

2D conversion is as good as it can be. very clever and can give an immersive experience depending on the source material but you are never going to see any in your face 3D unless the source was filmed in 3D to begin with.

SD content looks washed out but then I find SD just looks bad in general on most sets but definitely more muted on 4K, it is watchable. HD content is excellent, blu-rays look great but not better or worse than watching on a high end 1080p set. When watching 4K on Youtube the image is spectacular, it needs 4k to show its potential. All in all considering the TV has 4 times the amount of pixels to fill in the blanks from 1080p it is all round pretty great.

Brilliant. I have one question, on my current LG, if i am watching a film off a usb/ head drive then i can not skip forward, it only skips 30secs at a time. This is frustrating if i want to get to a particular part of the film. My only option is to fast forward at x16 speed. Does your set allow actual time line shifts. Sorry if i haven't made this clear.
Smelly_Pickle to miykk
1 Jan 16 1 #81
Cannot skip 30 seconds. You can forward and rewind at 2x speed 4x, 8x and 16x 2x is very slow. There is also a chapter skip but most USBs won't have chapters so this will restart the file. Sound continues to play as you rewind or forward but at the speed you select. You also get a pause button in the menu.

How you stop a file without speaking stop into the remote I have no idea.

Out of the box, build quality is solid, stand is really nice, it looks and feels like a premium set.

Been watching non stop and adjusting settings since 9am lol.

First of there was a lot of image retention, pretty bad to start and showed up instantly (i didn't leave a static screen on too long, it took seconds) Previous screens viewed were being shown behind the LG startup logo but soon dissapeared after playing some video. I was concerned about this but after watching video for an hour I haven't seen any since so I guess it burned in quickly. I advice playing a movie in zoom ratio to run it in before anything else just in case.

I have some clouding in the bottom right corner on my set but not half as much as to what was on my previous TV. Kdl50w705b, this is only noticeable on certain shades of grey, most wouldn't notice.

The bottom bead of bezel in the bottom left that is supposed to be flush seems to have missed glue or has bent out somehow. It is sticking out about two mil compared to the right side (my wife noticed this before me) and it is annoying me knowing it is there and shouldn't happen but doesn't affect the viewing. I will be contacting John Lewis about this but waiting to see if there are any other issues first.

The reason I want to keep the TV is firstly the extra 5" makes a big difference compared to my last 50" TV and secondly the 3D. The overall 2D image quality is almost on par with my last TV (at the moment). I need to tinker more with settings as I can't get the white really white and the contrast is clipping detail at 76 but maybe it will improve once i've mastered the calibration, this is probably just user error. I have used Spears and Munsil but have Disney WoW on the way so will hopefully yield better results for white with that or a combination of the two.

The 3D capabilities of this TV is the biggest reason I want to keep it, I have never seen 3D so good, it almost rivals Imax, in fact I would guess if the screen was as big it would be better and the colour reproduction after minor calibration is natural and nice. Really is spectacular watching 3D with practically no ghosting, it is a joy to watch for a change and is really immersive. Today I have watched under the sea 3D, a chapter of avatar, a chapter of gotg and completely watched Ant-Man and they are crystal.

I HATE that there is no stop button on the remote and I haven't found a work around other than speaking "stop" into it and it is doing my head in. Something so simple. Am i missing something? Exit and return buttons are there but they aren't stop and don't do the same thing when viewing BBC i player this is unmanageable.

The TV is overall great, solid build, looks expensive, 3D is amazing!, picture is nice and detailed and natural.

To add to the last I also cannot find whether or not this TV has hdmi 2.0 or 2.0a. If the latter it would be likely to receive full HDR support but I do doubt this.
Chrissytt
29 Dec 15 #71
Like I said strange that other users have said there is HDR yet the company themselves saying there isn't. This is from a tech guy that said there was no HDR as both the reps I spoke to didn't know themselves whether the TV had HDR.
Smelly_Pickle to Chrissytt
29 Dec 15 1 #72
I agree, it is strange being as HDR is such a big advertising point that LG do not mention it. It is possible it won't be supported in the future also. The only thing I can think of is that they are using HDR as a means to sell their more expensive sets and this one doesn't fall into that category. Maybe the compatibility came along with the colourprime engine but wont receive full support. Good to know it is there though.
Smelly_Pickle
29 Dec 15 1 #70
Others have specified it is there because it is, the post above even states trying HDR content off a USB. HDR is not being catergorised because LG are trying to push it with their OLED range, this TV having colourprime has made it fall into an interesting category. No matter what the LG rep says, there is no denying it is there because owners see it and use it currently.
Chrissytt
29 Dec 15 #69
Just to let everybody know this DOES NOT have HDR. Spoke to a tech guy from LG who categorically said no to HDR. Strange when others have said that watching amazon it says HDR is on though.

Similarly to the above question id like to know what the refresh rate is also and how it deals with football/cricket and whether there's any banding dirty screen effect?
Smelly_Pickle to tom6195
28 Dec 15 1 #64
I cannot find this information, however Dirty Screen Effect and banding are panel deformities which all new LED TVs have to some degree, it just shows more on sports because of the large amount of green or sky blue and is often how people notice it. It is luck of the draw to get a good one and if bad may require returning the set under the comfort of John Lewis or Richer Sounds warranty.

The TV does have tru-motion which can be switched on for sports for a smoother motion.
parkersblock
27 Dec 15 #61
Anyone know the true refresh rate of this panel? I can't seem to find any info. Some solid figures on input lag would be great as well as this would be primarily driven from a PC and used for gaming. I forgot to mention the Samsung I noted has a 120hz refresh rate and 26ms input lag measurement. Cheers
Smelly_Pickle to parkersblock
28 Dec 15 1 #63
Not sure about the refresh rate but the TV supports 4k 60p, you may want to read here for more detail on refresh http://uk.pcmag.com/tv-home-theaters/11612/feature/hdtv-refresh-rates-explained-60hz-120hz-and-beyond. Essentially it will handle all video content with ease. As for input lag, I cannot find this information but usually anything but a Sony TV has relatively bad input lag for gaming in comparison however only the most discerning of gamers can actually notice a difference against modern TVs in practice and this TV has an updated interface so may be improved.

Smelly_Pickle to tom6195

Your choice, john lewis deliver for free online and offer 5 years guarantee. Richer sounds offer 6 years but you would have to purchase in store.
2minutenoodles

Actually doesn't matter... they will replace it with a new one if it is faulty anyways... awesome find! Prob just someone refusing delivery due to change of mind.
Smelly_Pickle
27 Dec 15 1 #57
That's ace, my worry when buying a new TV is getting a dodgy panel as it seems luck of the draw nowadays (on any new tv). I went with John Lewis because as far as I can tell they will just keep swapping the set until you get a good one. Fingers crossed the first set I get is perfect though

I'm currently without a car otherwise 6year guarantee at richer sounds probably would have been my first choice.
poisondwarf
27 Dec 15 2 #56
Agreed, that thought would always be at the back of my mind...why was it returned.
But, in saying that, a John Lewis 5 year warranty makes that fact that the item was returned a bit easier to take.

I have used the John Lewis warrany on a previous plasma television, which failed, and was irrepairable, at about 4 years 6 months old.
JL gave me a full refund with no questions asked. By the way, it was a refund to my card to spend how i wished, and not a voucher refund.
Needless to say, I bought another television from them

John Lewis at the Trafford Centre had two returned models of this yesterday reduced to £799 - I took one and it is in perfect condition, the only thing that looked used was one of the screws! Obviously you'll need to ring ahead to see if it is still in, but thought it might help someone.

Just had a response from an owner of one, they state the exact length of the stand is 109cm across. I need a bigger table :s.

26 Dec 15 1 #49
I'm not at home at the moment, but the stand is very wide, practically as wide as the TV, so you need a lot of space if you use the stand. About 110cm sounds right, although I'd go with 120cm to play safe.

26 Dec 15 1 #40
No problem, my comment was removed while editing it. Not sure what happened lol Seems you read it anyway, which is cool.
It is all new and exciting stuff and to be honest it all depends on the panel you get and it doesn't matter what TV you buy, nowadays it seems luck of the draw to get a good one without some sort of backlight bleed or dse.

It is a lot of money but in my opinion it is the closest you can get to OLED which sadly is way more expensive, I would predict that this will likely be one of LGs last LED TVs. All depends what market you are in, I always want the best but can't afford it so for me it is the next best thing.
I do agree on size vs quality, I like the cinema effect and value good quality also,i can't bare walking into someones house with one of those 65" sharp tvs that have so much digital distortion it is barely watchable, or i would buy one of those for less lol

Have a good christmas and good luck in your search for a TV
parkersblock
26 Dec 15 #39
Yeah, to be fair, I removed that comment as I wasn't clued up on it. I just assumed it was another post processing effect which in all honesty I turn off on all my screens. It seems as if colour prime actually affects the colour gamut range that can be displayed so fair play, definitely something worth having.
parkersblock
26 Dec 15 #38
I'd like to see a review on HDTVtest so I could properly compare it against the JU7000 but LG have been putting out some really good low price sets recently so I wouldnt be surprised if this higher spec one is great.

generally i never like the sony picture. Whenever I look at a sony screen, whether led, plasma or 4k in my eyes never looks as good as it's competitors. Is there something unique they do that others don't. Other I can compare and try hard to see differences, but with sony it's obvious and not in a good way in my eyes!
This is my own opinion - it may be like marmite - love it or hate it.

Exactly, not only are they dark and uncomfortable, they are expensive too. I know this is subject to ones opinion but with colourprime technology LG has the best picture quality you could possibly own that isn't OLED/SUHD the only reason to buy Sony is if you are a hardcore gamer and value their unrivaled input lag that the majority of people wouldn't notice on a different set.

Great price for this model - was eyeing this up for a while, but ended up going for a Sony model in the Black Friday sales. Probably would have gone for this instead if it was at this price at the time.

As long as you bought it within the last 30 days, just contact them and ask them to price match themselves. You shouldn't have any issues.

I am not knocking this tv its a cracking tv for the money but so is the sony, i am buying a tv in next few days and all i am doing is going from one to tv to another as there is so many at my price point (£1000)

Yes Active 3d on the sony and i do prefer passive myself but its not a major deal for me as i have watched about 3 movies in 3d since i have had my LG which is around 2years old.

Warranty can be hit and miss with all the big manufactures you can find bad reviews and stories for them all. But i would be same as you once i was treated bad they would never get my money again.
Smelly_Pickle

I prefer Passive 3D for many reasons and personally have a bad experience trying to get Sony to honour warranty as they are based in Egypt despite being named Sony UK. They used to be my first choice but I won't buy them again. Problem was never resolved.

I have also kept a close eye on this model, i have recently purchased the LG 55LF652V and its good however if prices for the better models drop now then i will exchange. Not to bothered about 4k as 95% of what i watch is terrestrial tv.
Smelly_Pickle to miykk
25 Dec 15 3 #4
I agree, the best thing about 4K is Passive 3D, There are so many benefits to Passive over Active but the nature of passive 3D splits the picture and downgrades picture quality so on 1080p, this isn't very good at all for clarity. Essentially watching Passive 3D in 4K is like watching it in 1080p but with all of the benefits of Passive. (Cheap glasses, lighter more comfortable, brighter picture, no batteries!)
