13p cheaper than asda and probably a lot easier to get in asda i suppose. good price if you've got a costco card though

If you stop at member services anyone can pick up a day pass to browse the warehouse (it's not a shop).

My one (Cardiff) check at the entrance and they have someone standing at the exit to check your items before you leave, in case you are not stealing something I assume. They do not check your card at the till though.

If it's the same as the new Feltham one, you have to pass him to get to the customer services desk to sign up as a new customer. And once you've reached that there's not much to stop you going back past the tills.
It struck me as a bit odd to expect you to sign up and pay £25 a year before you've even had a chance to look round and see if they have stuff you might like to buy. Hence my slightly dodgy viewing excursion.

I also have the Amex card. I ended up with a £120 costco voucher last year which you can exchange for cash at customer services and I've already accumulated the same amount this year with a few months to go. Not bad for a £20/year + vat membership. Pays me £100/year to shop there and I already save a lot more than the £24 costs me.

They're not checking to see if you're stealing. They are checking to see if all the items have been rung up at the till. That includes checking to see if you've been overcharged.
