Thanks everyone. I do supervise my children's online activity & my 11 year old cannot access anything rated for over 12 on any gadget in this house. I'm probably going to go with the Xbox one as he has said none of his friends have a PS4 or are getting one & they all have a 360 or are getting (or hoping to get) an Xbox one for Christmas & maybe a preowned 360 as its probably cheaper than trying to get his fixed. Would anyone know if Xbox live would be transferred to the Xbox one as there is 10 months left on his account, I don't imagine it would but you never know lol
Really grateful for all your input

Yep, xbox gold is for both. I think some games actually give you bonuses if you have the 360 equivalent, and any games on your 360 account that are in the backwards compatibility list will also show up on the One.

Same, graphics don't make a game.... although the 2600 is probably a bit too much of a step backwards  I still spend a lot of my (ever shrinking) gaming time on the 360 because as you said, the graphics are still good and I have loads of unplayed games that I'm determined to get through

Well, I do enjoy my retro games, but not sure going back that far would be effective! I've always stuck to being one generation out of date, at least for the first year or so. I didn't get my 360 until the arcade version came out, a fair few years after the release date if I remember rightly. Up until then I was content with my PS2 and original xbox because of the wealth of cheap games that were available.

It was a massive surprise bonus for me!! I bought mine a few months after I bought his so he'd got a few free Gold games like Rayman. When I plugged mine in, I linked the accounts and all of his downloaded games appeared on my available list

I know that! My question was about the console & I said he wanted the game I didn't say he would be allowed to play it yet, my eldest was not allowed to play COD till the day before his 18th so I am aware of age ratings thank you

No one has the right to tell you how to raise your child. My son plays GTA and COD and knows that the language and violence is not real. He's very well mannered and knows all of the profanity from school anyway thanks to ineffective teachers who would not sanction the unruly kids in his class.
He's been on strict instruction from day one that if we hear one word repeated, he's on age appropriate only. He's NEVER sworn yet, his grades are excellent and he is more respectful than most of the toe rags I hear in the streets nowadays so I see no issue!! At the end of the day, only you can decide and it sounds like you already monitor what he's doing so I have every confidence that you'll handle it correctly!
Ohh..... just one more thing, backward compatibility is not yet working for ALL titles, worth bearing in mind if he definitely wants to play his old games (you might be able to pick up a cheap 2nd hand 360 as people sell to get next gen???)

Hi, I've just been reading through all the comments as to which is better & realise a lot of down to personal preference but I'm looking for advice as my 11 year old son has a Xbox360 but it's broke (don't ask it didn't malfunction) & he really wants a nex Xbox One, mainly because he want's the new Halo game, my eldest has a Xbox360 & loves it but also has a PS4 & has played both that & the Xbox One & he prefers the PS4 so I'm at a loss as to which console to go for. I have even considered just getting a pre-owned 360 but don't know if the hard drive we have will work in it till my eldest tries it in his. It does appeal to me that the 360 games will be able to be played on the Xbox One as he has quite a few & it is expensive to be buying more. He's not allowed on it that much as he get's so engrossed. So I would be really grateful for any advice on personal opinions, thanks guys.

Agree with getting both, BUT, you then cant share games etc (not at the same time at least). I went through the same issues when my lad wanted a "next gen" so I understand your position. I gave up researching which was "better" as there are too many fanboys on BOTH sides, in the end, I just asked him to ask his mates what they were getting so that they could still play online together. I liked it so much that I bought one too, now I get all the games as digital downloads and linked the Xbox accounts so we both get full versions of the games for the price of one (e.g. just bought COD Blackops3 for £55 which gives us both the game and ALL of the add-ons, its save me a fortune so far!!

I would have recommended the PS4 over the XB1 a year or so ago - but not anymore.
XB1 just has so many exclusive games now like Halo 5, Tomb Raider, Quantum Break - and the new software update adds DX12 power which many devs claim will see the XB1 become the more powerful machine of the two.
The is a reason the console chassis is so big, and it has a seperate fan-cooled PSU - and that's because when it reaches it's full power potential it will be a beast.

Honestly, not wanting to get into a fan war but what you have said just isn't true. You honestly won't see major differences with the graphics it is minimal only when you do digital foundry still shot types can you tell any differences. In terms of releases the Xbox One has really trumped the PS4. The new Tomb Raider being an example of this. each to their own but in terms of exclusives the Xbox has so far done a far better job.

I'm going to go out on a limb (and probably start quite an argument) but I'd say no they're not better. I bought one because there are now enough games that I want that aren't on the 360. But I still have loads of playing time left on the 360.
Given £249 and a choice between a 360 or a One, you'll get far more out of a 360.
shasnir to djh1975
11 Nov 151#16
Yes it's better in just about every way plus there is an update tomorrow that allows 360 games to be played on Xbox One, there's over 100 backward compatibility titles in the first wave and more will be released on a regular basis, starting in December. More titles are on the way, including fan favorites like Halo Reach, Halo Wars, Call of Duty®: Black Ops 1, Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite, and Skate 3.
Also all Xbox 360 Games with gold titles will also work on the Xbox One from now on.
Stick to the 360. This is no differences. If not then get a ps4.
Anyone who says its better than the 360 have no idea what they're going on about.

Erm no. The PS4 and the Xbone are much closer to each other than either is to the previous generation. The one's hardware is nothing like a 360's, it's a completely different architecture.

11 Nov 15#32
Unless you like to sync everything, like the apps on the console then the xbox one is different to the 360. In terms of hardware, its exactly the same. This is just a way of ripping people off through deception.

I have a launch Xbone and ive just ordered a PS4 today to replace my faulty lauch 1 and if you think they are nearley the same graphics wise id get down to specsavers, the new startwars game on the XboxOne can struggles to keep 60fps at 720p where as the Ps4 900p with no issue and by launch will more than likely be full HD and its a similar story on nearly every game. Dont get me wrong im no PS4 fan i have a 360 and have a One since launch but the PS4 is the better gamers console and the One is a all rounder, jack of all trades master of none. If your new to nextgen and your trying to choose for power it has to be the PS4 all games look better on it.

11 Nov 151#17
Yes they are a decent upgrade, especially if you want it to do more than just play games. PS4 has a very small technical advantage on its GPU (barely noticeable) but the XBox more than makes up for this with its many additional features.
