had no issues with vtx 3d before however is meant to be a noisy card

Same, they are a brand that build to a strict price point so expect a cooler that does the job but with a lot of noise. Especially as the 280x cores run hot.

Excellent graphics card. I have one in my PC with an i5 CPU and 8gb of ram. has coped with everything I have thrown at it, all in ultra graphics.

How much of an upgrade from a R9 270 would this be?
I had 100% failure on a batch of five Radeon 7770 cards, after that I'd never touch them again.

Wow, that's quite an upgrade. Can my wallet stretch this close to Christmas?!

Rebadged 7970. Good GPU for the price.
No FreeSync.

Factually incorrect. This is a previously unreleased, full-fat Tonga chip which was only previously available in the iMac. This chip is built on the latest version of AMDs GCN technology. Cracking deal.

does that support dual monitors? I think there is only 1 dvi port

yep it does definitely has other ports available, dvi is deprecated now so display port or hdmi is more usual to have available

380x is full Tonga GCN 1.2

I would strongly suggest avoiding this GPU. It's 2 versions of GCN behind and not to mention 4 generations of cards out of whack.
(7xxx, 8xxx, Rx 200, Rx 300) This remains a rebadge of the 7xxx.
This is quite a lot for a very old card. 7970 was released in January 2012. That's 3 years and 10 months ago.

Lol this card is similar in performance to the new 380x barring a few new features (not that important) for this price I would definitely recommend it - or get a second hand 290

The R9 270 and R9 270X are the exact same GPU (both being rebrands of the HD 7870), so about the same 50% upgrade (depending on overclocks for each).
Why does it matter how old the GPU is if the performance is there? This is still a significantly more powerful card than anything Nvidia have below the GTX 970 (which costs almost twice as much) and trades blows with the R9 380X released just days ago (which is closer to £200). Unless you specifically want to use FreeSync or have a weak PSU, it makes no real difference.

The 280x, the 380x and the Geforce 960 all trade blows.
But that's on DX11 with a good CPU.
The 280x uses GCN 1.0, the 380x uses GCN 1.2.
And here's the kicker. If you don't have at LEAST an I5 2500k, you are going to have a really bad time with this card's performance.
I'd skip this card and get the 380x or the 960.
Or if you can pony up a bit more, the 970 or the 390.

It's a shame CPU overhead has only recently become known with AMD GPU's as it's getting to the point of being too late. They made some improvements a few months ago but I think that might be it...

There was so much focus on 'isolating GPU performance' that many tests focused far too hard on pimping out their kit and then putting a low end GPU in.
Then a few people thought they'd give the i3/AMD a try with testing and they pretty much immediately saw the issue.

Shader Cache is supposed to improve frametime judder/fluctuations in games but how many will benefit from it, we don't know yet...
