This phone went flaming at £116 dont vote cold because its a china phone appreciate the specs and vote on that why pay £400+ for a Samsung

This does not have the 800Mhz 4G band which has the widest coverage - it will not get 4G in the same places as other 4G phones. The lower Hammer model does (it is a lower tier phone), as does the cheaper Doogee F5.

Mine arrived from Amazon this morning. So first impressions.....

Build quality, design and screen are amazing. Very, very fast phone.

Unfortunately, it would not allow writing to SD card so couldn't download music etc. Fixed with Nextapp SD fix. SD card now working. Also by default mobile data was turned off. Need to go into "data usage" setting and switch on. I spent a while thinking there was a problem.

The speaker is poor. I don't mean regular mobile phone poor. I mean really poor. You could use it when watching a film or playing a game, but it will take away from the otherwise very slick experience.

Mine works okay on Three 3g. Not been near 4g yet. However, hdspa+ (or 3g+) does not work. This also means that if, like me, you have a Home Signal box, that it does not work. Also Google play services stops every so often. The sound quality of music through headphones is great due to the Texas instruments HiFi chip. However, there is a definite pop when starting and finishing playback.

I have a Smart Ultra 6 arriving later today and I don't know which to keep!?! The Smart Ultra won't feel as nice and only has 2 GB RAM. However, I doubt it has any of the bugs mentioned above. Hmmmmm......

Oh, I should also mention that the multicoloured notification light is very good. I was worried it was going to be tacky, but no it looks/works great.

Honestly some of the Chinese smartphones are fantastic, I'm using the OPPO Find 7a that was a deal on here a few months ago and I think it's better than the Samsung Galaxy S5 it replaced. I would not worry about buying a Chinese phone as they are well built and reliable, I would just look on it as getting far more for your money than when you pay for a big name brand (most of which are all made in China anyway like the Iphones)

My only gripe is you don't get the range of accessories you do with the more mainstream phones, you need a universal car cradle kit and desktop charger etc rather than a bespoke one, but that's about it.

If you check the video reviews on Youtube you can get a very good idea of exactly what to expect from a Chinese Smartphone before you commit to purchasing one.

Same here... Battery life on these things can be worse than expected... To avoid losing £100 or whatever i'd rather buy the Vodafone Smart Ultra and unlock it at least you can return it if anything goes wrong

GPS & 4G also can cause issues on these import mobiles

Basically if you feel lucky then buy one;)

The biggest problem I can see with this phone and other cheap Chinese phones is the horrible black borders around the screen. Banggood lie in their photos by not showing the black borders, but in reality it has them.

If you want a good cheap phone then I would look at Xiaomi instead. Their phones don't have horrible black borders and they probably use better quality components too. The internal speakers are probably cheap on this umi iron. Xiaomi redmi note 2 or Xiaomi MI4C would be my choice.

The flaws with Chinese phones are not so much with the hardware, but with the integration of the hardware with the OS. While manufacturers like Umi, Elephone, Cubot etc spend an inordinate amount of resource and time on 'one-upmanship' of Apple, Samsung, LG and the other big boys by shaving down their phones' thickness by 0.1mm, bumping up the resolution of their cameras by 0.5M pixels or adding an eye-scan unlock feature which no one in their right minds would want to use, rarely would they hire decent developers to ensure the version of Android on their phones actually works well with all that high end hardware.

Thus you end up wondering why your cutting edge Chinese phone with an octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM stutters when opening a web page or why it reboots several times a day.

Hot, I went with the Amazon deal at £111.99, also qualify for £7 deal so you can bring this down to £105. No VAT implications for importing etc as the item is in the UK. Brought a Redmi Note two months ago from a lightning deal at £79.99 and returned it recently as I broke the screen by accident and phone was running way too slow - Amazon gave a full refund so can't fault customer service.

Said by someone who obviously overvalues the concept of "phone"..
I doubt anyone has a "drawer full" of Chinese smartphones, unless they are dropping them or breaking them somehow.

If you want to sign up to a contract and pay for your £500 smartphone on hire purchase to vodafone or o2, then go for it.
I however, prefer the idea that my phone can do everything yours can, and more. I can bring it abroad and lob any sim card into it, and even leave my home network active on the other SIM in case anybody wants to contact me.
I can also switch phone networks whenever I choose. No brand provider bloatware on my phone thanks.
If I drop it, I can buy a new one instead of splashing out £70 or so on a new screen.

Don't understand all this mass buying of Chinese phones. Just put down the minimum spec you want and wait, then use it for a couple of years. Personally, I'm not buying a new smartphone until it has 64GB memory, 4GB Ram and octa-core and is priced at about 100 quid.

Would prefer 128gb rom though. I don't like elephone as a company but the P9000 looks quite interesting.

I have this phone and recommend it - solid build, fast, good camera, fantastic screen, and I like the UMI company too. They are doing good work, supporting their product with updates of the ROM to iron out some initial bugs, and I get the feeling they are trying to build a loyal customer base. Also, buying through fulfilled by Amazon is great for peace of mind and fast delivery. Great phone! Really unbeatable price. And I think it is a lot better and more premium feeling than the Vodafone smart 6.

It really depends what you want out of it. Cheap Chinese phones = cheap electronics, you take the gamble of quality control. Some are ok some are not, if you can afford your phone dying in situations where you need a phone. Then get a cheap one.

Why iPhone/Samsung costs that much more? Because they don't save that extra 10-15% on components which may make all the difference from working phone and none working phone. For me I would only risk it if I have a spare phone I carry 24/7 (which I do). So it's ok.

It's a shame there are such ignorant people commenting and writing this particular phone off because it is Chinese. Yes, there has been some dodgy crap out of China in the past, and I understand that that colours opinions about current technology out of China too. But this particular phone should be judged by people who actually have experience of the phone - not of the brand, or a completely different model or something. This phone is good, I am writing this on it. It is solid and worth at least twice the price, and would cost probably 3 times the price if it had a badge on it that you recognise. Anyway, ordering through Amazon fulfilled takes all risk out of the equation. Get it. Simples.

27 Oct 15 #66
I don't understand the facebook comment to be honest - is it banned on here or something? If not then you should totally post it as a deal, amazing price (and service) imo.

Can't understand why there's so much commenting on China phones yada yada when Cocis correctly pointed out that the fulfilled by Amazon option (and price) effectively takes out any doubt or worrying - you get 30 days to return it I think.

On a side note, I recently bought a Smart Ultra 6 from Amazon and literally sent it back the same day because there was an issue with the camera sensor (I think there was some dust on it). Just goes to show that even 'non-chinese' (even though it's made by ZTE so technically is although they're obviously a much bigger company that Umi, Elephone and the ilk) phones can have their issues.

Ordered one as well once I saw the discount code on facebook. I've been putting off upgrading my iPhone 4S as I'm not comfortable with spending £500+ on a new phone. Fingers crossed I'm happy with the OS. I'll post back with my findings once I've had a play with it. Great find op, cheers!

Got mine today. Very impressed with it so far, especially considering the price!

Struggling with something I'm hoping someone might be able to help with. Popped my Vodafone sim in and it says I need to update settings to use mobile internet/MMS. It didn't send an automatic configuration message even though I requested one - it says "your device doesn't support automatic settings updates. Get started at vodafone.co.uk/settingsupdate" but that page is not helpful at all.

Any ideas?

I do get a little pop/crackle between songs but it is livable considering the quality of the sound, which is superb. This is a known issue and from reading online it may be solved in further updates.

By the way it is very loud ! coming from a Moto G 4G where I have the volume pretty high on the Iron its on low and that is loud enough.

I upgraded to 1.6 and I see there is a beta 1.7 out too but that is a manual install while the 1.6 is installed by downloading to PC then pointing Rootjoy at it...!

Okay, so the Iron/Smart Ultra comparison continues.....

I cracked open the SU6 box this morning with the intention of sending back the Iron, due to it not connecting to my home signal box. Neither did the SU6. Turns out I had to register the new nano sim, even though it was the same number.

So I got a chance to compare the handsets. The Iron is definitely quicker. Apps open quicker, screens scroll quicker. It is just slicker. Also the SU6 has a much warmer (orangey) screen when they are side by side. The screen on the Iron is definitely nicer. Think I am going to tolerate the clicking audio and dodgey speaker and stick with the Iron.
Wheresmylaptop
29 Oct 15 #100
Should have said. The Iron coped much better with multitasking. Maybe due to extra 1gb RAM.

Discovered another useful thing which many of you may know about - engineer mode. If you don't know what it is Google it. I felt the headphones were too loud on the lowest setting. This allows you to change all sorts of things like that. At your own risk!

Very nearly went for this but had a look at the umi product forums and all the threads about rom issues (buzzing sound, usb speed etc) and people begging for firmware updates and it has put me off. Hardware looks good but without decent software what's the point. No cyanogenmod option due to MTK chipset. Same story with the Elephone.

Sorry if I'm repeating previous comments but I didn't have the willpower to go back through them all.

Daz,

You clearly know more than I do...so your point about MTK...should I be looking for a snapdragon processor to have ROM options? I've been looking for a new turbo phone for a week but it's so hard with so many variants now.

I used to have an Acer Tablet, never got updates. I got an ASUS one and it gets updates all the time. Any idea which of the Chinese brands are good with updates?

Cheers

grr, having problems with Google Now. Big issue for me as thats my main screen :-(
cannibalwombat to loopz
30 Oct 15 #115
What's the problem?

Few little niggles with mine too.

- Most of the time when searching using the Google app (including the persistent search bar), results don't appear.
- The WiFi range appears to be really bad, though speeds are excellent when in range.
- Mine can't access 4G or HSPA in Brighton on Vodafone, which is a real disappointment. Stuck with 3G.
- The screen sensitivity is not quite right, for example quick back swipe to delete in Swiftkey doesn't work properly (you have to do it really fast and it takes a few tries) and scrolling in Chrome is quite slow.
- I can't get audio output via headphones quite right, just doesn't sound right and there is a mild background hiss.
- Camera shutter speed is pretty poor, there's always at least a 1 second pause after taking the picture.

Otherwise, build quality and general performance are very impressive at this price point. The heart rate monitor is completely pointless and doesn't work particularly well, and I wish there were more customisation options built in (especially having come from Cyanogenmod) but overall I'm happy with it.

i now own this phone after the great-but-flaky su6. its nice that it's stable, pretty quick and it has the secret hardware buttons in v1.6 of their firmware, which is what im about to upgrade to.

i'd say the reception wasn't as strong as the su6 or my previous galaxy s5. but its not bad.

camera is meh... but really, ive got a dslr for that.

I almost thought it was faulty because the notification light wouldnt stop.. thats when i realisee i had 3 sms apps running.

no 4g on o2, but im planning on switching to an EE based provider anyway.

great phone

I am no expert, I am the sort of person who would tinker with roms with an old phone, rather than one I had just purchased. Done it before but found it a steep learning curve.

I believe snapdragon cpus have a better chance of getting cyanogenmod roms. Mediatek won't release the necessary drivers to allow a legit community rom to be built. But don't quote me on that!
andy_sym

Just bought this from Amazon using the code found via their Facebook page as mentioned here for £111.92 instead of the Moto G (3rd gen) or Voda Smart Ultra 6 at this price range with a 12 months warranty so thanks all. Will be having a look at XDA and other places for any ROM updates and will post here if I find anything.

You need to download the Rootjoy software from the Umi website. Once installed and your phone is connected, go to downloads and it is listed there. Flashing is easy, but slow. Just choose flash in the software and select the rom you downloaded.

A new official 1.7 rom has just been released but for camera issues I would make sure the resolutions are actually set to their correct sensor values - 13 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front as otherwise the software trickery might be causing issues
cannibalwombat to andy_sym
6 Nov 15 #135
The stock camera app doesn't offer a 13MP option! It's 12 or 15! Also I thought the front camera was 8MP not 5.

I must agree that the camera is pretty poor. At least the results I've been getting from the stock camera app have not been good. I am currently experimenting with various third party apps to see what improvements I can make.

What are your thoughts on the new ROM? Any obvious benefits or glaring issues?
Wheresmylaptop
6 Nov 15 #134
Just installed 1.7 rom and struggling to find any difference between this and 1.6. Anyone else installed? Any differences?
andy_sym
6 Nov 15 1 #136
My apologies the front camera is apparently a ov8858 sensor which specs say it is indeed 8 megapixel, not sure why I typed 5 megapixel earlier. The phone is my wife's and is currently on 1.6 ROM and I have set front to 8 and rear to 13 on this fine but the camera is still the weakest bit as eveything else is spot on. I'm going to leave the 1.7 ROM a few weeks before maybe updating again
Wheresmylaptop
7 Nov 15 #137
The new from has no obvious differences to v1.6. All appears to work fine except the annoying headphone click which is still there. I REALLY hope they sort that. It's such a shame as the quality of sound through headphones is phenomenal once the music has started.

As for the camera resolution. Sensors tend to be in 4:3 format. Need to make sure you're not in wide-screen if you want 13mp. I took the advice above and installed Camera FZ5. Very good app. Though it does crash if you try to save directly to SD card.
john-boi
7 Nov 15 1 #138
I echo the problems with the camera but it can be solved by installing a different camera app that allows setting focus to infinity or macro or anything that isn't auto focus. After that the quality is really good.

I initially was going to send it back to Amazon but was only offered a refund and . By this time I had realized that besides the camera this is an amazing phone for £111.

By the way the sound is outstanding all my music has more depth and detail I have enabled the viperx software don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Everything is such an improvement on my Moto G 4g still can't believe it only cost £111 !!

Glad I purchased this through Amazon. It was working perfectly for a while then the 3G just stopped working. Says it had a 3G signal but wouldn't load any data and the miniature 3G symbol wouldn't show up. After 3x days of speaking to my mobile operator and then updating the rom to 1.7 I think I've just been unlucky and got a bad one. Gutted as I REALLY liked this phone and I can only assume if I want a new one I'm not gonna get it as cheap as the coupon has probably expired :disappointed:
Wheresmylaptop to shamon
11 Nov 15 #142
You have probably done this, but have you made sure the mobile data is on. Weirdly it appears to be off by default. This sorted it for me. Drag down the quick settings (where you have all the tiles). Click on the tile that shows your mobile signal and operator. Then check the mobile data switch is on.

This sorted it for me. Hopefully you get to keep your phone.

Yeah I have tried that, but thanks anyway. I've started a return with Amazon and ordered a new one. It's £126 now as the voucher has expired. Still, it's a hell of a lot of phone for the money and I was very happy with it until the 3G problem. Fingers crossed I don't end up with the same problem with the new one.
Wheresmylaptop
13 Nov 15 #144
Gutted, it's so close to being fantastic. I have now given up and gone for a refund.

The final straw was when I was testing the camera. It will not focus on any object more than about 5 metres away. I could live with the lack of HSPA+ and just about live with the headphone clicking.

Such a shame as it is SOOOOO fast and that screen is amazing. Way better than the Smart Ultra 6 that I may be forced to buy. As I say, gutted, but these niggles would have driven me mad over the course of the next year or two.
messiahcomplex8 to Wheresmylaptop

Thought I'd pop back to this thread to see what others thought; I've pretty much come to the same conclusion (camera poor focusing/slow/poor quality, popping/crackling when changing music tracks, odd things like the data turning itself off), think I'll be returning mine to Amazon too...

Had a Oneplus 2 invite offered to me so quite tempted by that, what have you guys opted for instead of this?

I have gone for an LG G3 from Ebay. Should arrive in next couple of days. Described as excellent condition (always case and screen protector). Was less than a tenner more than the Iron. Obviously, sacrificing warranty and only 2GB RAM, but getting faster CPU, market leading camera and screen (Quad HD) from last year, loads of accessories available, wireless charging, removable battery, NFC, GLONASS, gyroscope (for Google cardboard). Hopefully it will be as good as I expect!
