I bought one of these a couple of years ago. The USB ports died after a few months

The last power lead i bought with built-in usb sockets made any device attached to it unusable. Really dirty power output caused screens to flicker and become non-responsive to touch. Stick with a good quality dedicated usb charger.

I may be regarded as a Ludite but have never felt comfortable with mains voltage in such close proximity to USB voltage
- 240 volts versus 5 volts - it may never happen but not for me.

hahaha. are you kidding? how do you think a standard USB charger works?

I have this exact one. Charges great & never had any problems.
A charger does not have mains voltage and USB in close proximity - the output from a charger is 5v only and 240v input with electronics between them.

Have 2 of these I got for £4 each some time back - the 'surge protection' offered is a joke and I would not trust it, one of mine still works despite surge and the lights flicker all the time - the attached ps3 certainly malfunctioned when it happened (and the lights acround the house flickerred like crazy for a few seconds for some unknown reason). PS3 is luckily ok (So could be thanks to this - but would doubt it - other surge protectors have proved to actually do something to the power when surge happened, rendering the extension non-functional - though I have only had one other event thus far since using surge protectors, touch wood).
The usb ports are pathetic as mentioned by others - 2 out of the four across the two extensions are busted - they have had very little intermittent use.
But despite this, and cheap feeling construction aside, the WORST thing is when used the usb ports buzz soo loudly you cant use them in a bedroom - not that the ultra bright lights make them usable in a bedroom anyway.
So do I use them / why? - Yes I use one for my PC monitors as that feeds from a proper guaranteed surge protector, and I can cope with the lights at my desk where they are hidden behind the monitors. I use the poor usb ports to drive a fan above my desk. I tested the power output of the USB port on my scope and its very noisy - wouldnt want to use it with anything valuable, like charging my phone.
All in all, I use one of the two to make use of the £4 I spent, and keep the other to hand as a random spare general use extension lead in the cupboard.
I would avoid at this price, if I knew before I would have probably avoided at £4!
