For some reason the extended edition of the trilogy is very expensive everywhere.

The extended version is the only version to watch and own. Avoid the standard cinematic version.

if you want to be stuck to your sofa all day then sure! I like the cinematic releases, I get bored of 3 hour+ films

FYI this version is not supposedly well mastered. It was inferior to the TT and RotK individual releases, and was remastered to look better for the boxset of the trilogy. That's why this version is sold so cheaply.
