I've seen a lot of 'smart' bulbs on here, and they mostly get slated. However, I shall be undeterred because it's cheap, I bought one to test and it's nae bad.
You can control this via an app on your Android phone with the supplied app. It has the following features:
* Set RGB
* Default warm setting, which is nice and bright
* Colour fade mode with selectable palettes
* Pulse in time to stored mp3 music
* Pulse in time to mic input
* Change colour to what colour is being highlighted on your camera.
Sure, it's not going to be as bright as a Philips bulb - or then again it might be, as I'm too poor to fork out £25 per bulb. It may be more difficult to orchestrate multiple bulbs via bluetooth due to the nature of it.
However, it's a lot of fun for £6.57 and the brightness when you have it in 'warm' mode is comparative to the CFL that it replaced.
It would make an idea stocking-filler for the teenager who spends all their time in their room chilling; my son wants one for his room anyway.
Took 10 days to arrive.

I remember 1914. The war had just begun, and mam said goodbye to dad. "I will return," he said in his magnificent voice, filling the single room in which we all lived, ate, slept and played. We, nine children and mother, said, "Haste ye back."
He came back in 1918, a changed man. Mother was pregnant again within weeks. She consulted her friends for advice. They advised that father needed a hobby to keep his mind off intimacy, and so mother asked father if he would like to take up knitting.
"I have lived all of my life without learning to knit and I can't think of any reason to start now," he boomed, forgetting that he was no longer in the trenches, struggling to be heard. Ah, shell shock affected people in different ways.
Mother saved her money until she had enough to go to the Doctor's one day. She told the doctor about father's refusal to countenance knitting as a hobby. The doctor offered to have father sectioned, and two days later he was carried off forcibly to the nearby asylum.
"I've lived all of my life without ever being sectioned and I can't think of any reason to start now."
A charge-hand raised a syringe and thrust it deep into father's left buttock.
He never was released from hospital. He died in a fire in the hospital, caused by an overweight nurse walking quickly and generating enough friction where he chafed to create a small fire. And all because he wasn't prepared to try something new.

Sheesh I can't believe you tried to make out my post was racist. Talk about reading into things. Anyway It hasn't been tested here, it doesn't meet EU standards. That's all I was pointing to, which is a fair comment because it doesn't, This is a potentially dangerous product, it should be properly tested. The app controls multiple groups of multiple bulbs. So it is a system, but peer to peer rather than client server. Dispenses with all that expensive Philips hub system. Given that many people already have capable mobile phones, it is a much better (affordable for the end-user) business model.

That seems like a bit of a reach. It's dangerous to throw terms like "racist" around as what it actually achieves is to diminish the gravity of the term. It may well be that people who think chinese manufacturers are bad are more likely to be racist but applying that generality to an individual (which, admittedly, you fell just short of doing) would in itself be prejudiced.
thekanester
13 Nov 15#52
I concede it may have been harsh, but I had just read his other post that had the theme of "why is it when you type carp & gearbest or banggood into a browser you don't get any hits? Chinese Censorship?". So that suggested to me that he already had some form of prejudice to begin with and when someone on his post pointed out his browser safety was switched on so it wouldn't return words like carp then it further compounded my low opinion there.
Kneejerk maybe, but sometimes you gotta just slap dumb down before the stoopid they spout becomes commonly accepted.
There is not compelling evidence that shows Chinese made smart bulbs are any more dangerous than any other. In fact by replacing a mercury-laced CFL with one of these, I think my nett safety has increased.

A little bit of safety information for anyone talking about using light fitting socket converters: don't do it.
If you are going to buy ES bulbs, get your fittings changed over to ES by a professional electrician, or buy BC bulbs.
The ES socket is polarised for safety reasons to ensure that the base of the socket is the live contact and the side of the socket (the screw thread) is the neutral. This means that there is no chance of electric shock if you touch the screw thread of the bulb whilst inserting or removing it while the power is switched on.
The BC socket is not polarised, but both of the contacts are in the base of the socket so it is impossible to make any contact with them whilst inserting or removing a bulb. The side of the bulb base is not used as the current return unlike with ES bulbs.
The problem arises with the BC to ES "converters", because they are not polarised, there is a 50% chance that when you insert it, the screw thread side will be connected to live (there is no way to tell without using a voltmeter). The light will still work regardless, but it is dangerous as the screw thread on the bulb will carry the full mains voltage whilst it is in contact with the socket and the power is on. If you are touching this while inserting or removing the bulb, it will be extremely unpleasant for you, and if your lighting circuits are not protected by an RCD you'll almost certainly be killed.
xtightgitx to madasadog
13 Nov 152#78
Once you screw the ES fitting into the BC adaptor it becomes a BC unit. All you have to do is to twist the plastic part of the adaptor instead of the bulb and there is no danger of exposing any live parts. As for being almost certainly killed without RCD that is complete and utter **** mate.

I bought a cheap set of LED bulbs from china a year or so ago to replace the expensive to run Halogen bulbs in my kitchen (screw fitting not Gu10). After 2-3 weeks one of them must have heated up so much due to crappy wiring inside that the domed lid literally blew off so ferociously that it hit the other side of the kitchen and tripped the house.
A week later another one did it but this time was smoking when I reset the trip switch. The other 4 then got removed sharpish. I won't risk that again with cheap bulbs. :disappointed:

Amazing little thing - the app is available from HERE
I am using an ANdroid phone, and the connection was instant, and amazingly responsive. As I slid my finger over the rainbow on my screen, the bulb changed instantly.
The music and voice controlled is a bit weird, and the colours change too suddenly for my liking. But the camera feature is great - just use the app to take a shot of any colour available to you, and the bulb will match it (very easy!)
I will be ordering a few more, and will try and link them up. They are weaker than what I was expecting (I would guess that they are around 40w or so, as they seem to be quite a bit less bright than the 60w I replaced tham with while testing). As a result, I have put my one into a floor lamp, and it's perfect for me there.
Thanks for pointing it out, OP.

Afraid not. It would be really nice if it did. There is no software function on the phone for this, and nothing built into the firmware. There is a gradient function that can run independently of the phone. Maybe some modder will be able to improve on what's there, but for now sadly you have to pay a wee bit more for that functionality.

Oh, and it looks like Gearbest have reduced the price - around £6 for either the ES or BC fitting
So, I tried it with Another Handset running 5.1, and the app didn't work.
Will need more testing. Did anyone have any more feedback?
I actually just received another today - this time a bayonet fitting and can confirm all is well with that one.
