Students don't get a job and they're lazy.
They get one to buy luxury items and they have "too much money".
The way the older generation talks about our kids today is a disgrace.
We've taken so much from them. We screwed up the economy so they struggle to get a job.
We knackered up their ability to get mortgages to the point where almost all young people have no realistic chance of getting one.
We sit in our houses which went through a huge property price boom and tell them “at your age, I had my own place” when in reality, we got lucky with our property price increases.
We privatised so much of the essential public services that it’s become a race to the bottom for wages within them. Nurses, teachers and the emergency services have been blasted in the papers for years. We’ve decimated their pensions (even though they paid for themselves), made them work longer hours, made them study more and rack up huge university fees, and then accuse them of having “too much money” if they want a device they could do their university work on.
We berate their life choices. We have allowed the government to steal their privacy though endless anti-terror laws. We sold anything ‘British’ to the Chinese or Germans, for short term gains for ourselves.
We are one of the richest nations in the west, yet our older generation still likes to tell the younger one what they should and shouldn't have, which is ironic given they never had the struggles that we have imposed on our children. They are our own flesh and blood, yet we can't wait to put them down at every opportunity.
So please, before you start proclaiming utterly ridiculous things like they have “too much money” – just remember what we have taken from them, and ultimately what we have left them with.
They owe us nothing. In fact, thanks to our generation, they owe it to the Chinese.

The Pro 3. The differences are minute, when compared to the Surface Pro 4. The Pro 4 has a roughly 33% faster processor, which is also more energy efficient. As I already own the Pro 3, I will definitely be waiting for the Pro 5 next year. The additional cash required to top up any cash recouped from selling last years device, make this a major cash to performance upgrade loss. Only the most hardent techies could convince themselves to make this upgrade. However for first time entrents to the Surface line, always enter with the latest product line (and future proof at least a little, i5, 8GB RAM, etc.), if funds are available to do so. A purchase in this price range, should deliver high enough performance (for atleast 2 years).

I think it works for primary and secondary school kids as well, so parents could buy it for themselves.

Define "student". Someone studying for a master's degree or even a Ph.D is a student. Plus, most students have parents...

Ah the age old pick on students who have too much money line. Students should end up earning more and thus paying more tax and putting it back in to the economy. Although we as tax payers can always just moan about others and how we're being robbed, no need to let facts get in the way of being miserable.

SP3 is a huge upgrade on SP1/2 and made even better if you get the SP4 Type Cover and Pen. I have and still love my SP1 (with type cover 2) but am tempted to grab a SP3 with the new peripherals.

Unless you really need the Pro the Surface 3 non Pro 128Gb SSD with 4Gb RAM is a brilliant device and being lighter and slightly smaller far easier to use as a tablet for long periods. The new class of Atom CPU's are a massive step up from old Atom's. I use one daily and laugh at the people in the office who try and use an iPad for work

Think I'll hold off this year. I have the SP3 and the 4 doesn't seem a big enough upgrade to justify me switching just yet! If you're only just jumping on though it looks to be an awesome device. My biggest issue with the 3 is the fan kicking in very easily, and the throttling - it seems like this is improved significantly in the 4.
I know people say to just get the new type cover if you have a 3, but to be honest I have no issue with the current one. I can't really justify the expensive price there for a marginal typing improvement.

If you get chance head into a Microsoft store, they have loads of accessories you can't get in the UK. I picked up a really nice case for my Surface 3 which includes a 6Ah battery which can charge the Surface or any USB device. It cost $60 which I thought was great, you can pay that for a standard case with no battery

QUESTION:: How do you get the discount if the pupil doesn't have an email? And can't write, or count, or do the alphabet... Is that an issue? They are a 'student' and, in my case, can use the ipad without any problems, so should be eligible for this... But how?
stuellis
1 Nov 15#32
Yes, especially with responsiveness. The older Atom based tablets I tried all suffered lag even when just navigating web pages, there is just no lag on the Surface 3 when doing normal work but its fast enough to be used for updating Office files including decent size spreadsheets which do slow it down a bit but its still surprising good given its a tablet and not a fill blown desktop or laptop

This is comedy gold. Every generation probably since the stone age has moaned about the next generation and in turn the next generation has moaned about the previous one. I work at a Uni and can tell you that some students (not all or even most mind you) do burn through huge amounts of cash on crap and it usually paid for by well meaning but stupid parents. The sense of entitlement with some students is staggering too, with students putting their feet on the table in class and when being told not to moaning that they have paid for the class so they should be able to sit how they like etc. By the way if you want to go back to the good old days of my parents that meant never going to university at all, never going abroad or travelling much further than the nearest coast to, living with parents even after marriage and only being able to get two and a half times your income on a mortgage and having to stump up a 20% deposit on your house. Cars were crap, expensive to buy and the nearest thing to a luxury In them was a radio. I would guarantee you would not swap your oh so miserable life in 2015 for the one they had in the 60s and 70s or the one I had in the 80s and 90s when people lost homes and business' due to a much worse recession than we are having now (my mortgage interest went up to 13% at one stage) and we were all to scared to death by the new AIDS epidemic that was on the news every day. I could go on but the reality is that generally speaking the next generation has a different time to the previous one in many ways it will be better in others it will be worse.

I have an i5 SP4 on pre-order already, but I am having second thoughts. Not exactly value for money.. also after thinking about it, I actually think this discount isn't exactly fantastic. Basically saved £118.99 on what was a £1,188.99 purchase. Much prefer Apple's educational discount rates.

For those asking, Surface Book will be released in Q1 2016

However, its only really meant for those with a SP3 wanting to use Windows Hello. Those getting a SP4 are better off just using the camera.

Thanks for the heads up Mark.
Does anyone know what the exact process is for the student deals. I have friends and family with .ac.uk email addresses that would help me out with getting the discount. I've had a look at how the order process works and from what I've seen, after adding the items to the basket and going to checkout it asks you to log into your Microsoft account (hotmail, live, outlook etc...). After that comes the Academic verification, the FAQs say that you put in the email address, then check it, and click on the verification link in an email to get verified.
What happens after that? Does it just go back to the checkout via the original Microsoft/hotmail account and proceeds through there? It's just that obviously I'd rather use my MS account to order it to my name and address, so that if there is any problems with the SP4 once it arrives I can send it back or deal with it without having to bother family to do it for me. For those who have done it through family before, did you have to order it through the name of the person on the student email address or is it a case of once it's verified they don't care?
Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the wall of text but wanted to cover all steps to help clear up any confusion.
Hi, I did, my process went like this
1. Log in to Quidco.com and go the Microsoft Cashback page Click on the 5% Surface Cashback rate to be redirected to the Mocrosoft Store.
2. Go to the Student/Education section of the store and add Type cover to cart. This automatically takes you to the basket screen, Click on the Microsoft logo or top banner to take you back to the store. Then navigate back to the education section and add the desired Surface Pro 4 which directs you back to the basket screen.
3. If everything is in the Basket that you want and should say student price, click next. You'll be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account, MSN, Hotmail, Outlook, Live etc... Do so.
4. Next you'll be on the verification screen with 4 options to verify. I used the email address so can only advise for that. Put in the email of the family member or friends email address, After submitting it, if the school/uni is registered with them you'll get green text saying to check the email to verify. If it's nots registered on Microsoft's system you'll get red text saying it's not registered, In this case try a different email or verification option.
5. Open up a new tab on your browser and log into their email account to find the email from Microsoft (may need to check spam folder). Once you find the verification message, click the link inside. This will redirect that browser tab back to the Microsoft store to say you're successfully verified and to continue the order like you would any online store, putting in YOUR address and bank details. If they are not with you at the time of ordering or you don't have direct access to their student email address, make sure that they either send you the verification link from the email or forward you the email so that you can open it up/click it from within the same browser you started the order process or the verification will likely fail
ALSO, be prepared that with such a high value purchase, that your bank might flag the purchase as someone having stolen your details. This happened to me and the final confirm order on the store failed for me, I instantly got an automated call from the bank where I had to confirm recent purchases and that it was me trying to order. Took about 5 minutes. I came back up stairs and thought I might need to start the process all over again, but there was a retry order button on screen, clicked it and all went through fine the second time.
After finishing the order I went to work for a couple of hours and when I came back I checked Quidco and the 5% had tracked for a further £70+, all in all saving me over £210 on the order.
Hope this helps someone.

Regardless of what has been previously posted ... Most of my student friends did indeed do crappy degrees for ridiculous reasons and **** almost every penny of their monetary reward via either loan or grant on the most ridiculous things such as tattoos, alcohol, iphones, takeaways, etc. .. And hardly a single penny on education ... If you say this is not representative you are either lying or delusional .....
