just order it and pick it up next day in store or next day delivery, both free.

People who buy this phone buy it for the size, hard to get a top spec small handset under 5'' nowerdays.

I don't know if its too late to ask now, but I went into the o2 shop yesterday and asked about the unit. They said that as I'm not an o2 customer (I'm on GiffGaff), I'd have to buy an o2 sim bundle as well for £10. Is there any way around this?

maybe order it online? it doesn't seem to require that via the website, but I could be wrong.

Is this a good replacement for an iPhone 5 64GB? Need something that will hold all my music and this seems to fit the bill (with an SD card added)?
Keep reading lots of reviews/comments about it getting uncomfortably hot?

BTW, I had a z3 from o2 and a tesco sim works out the box. Don't know if this is any different.

Tesco and giffgaff use o2 network so you can use these 2 sim in any o2 phone, Asda uses EE.

That's the temperature of the phone, not how hot the deal is.
Just be cautious of the Z5 Compact as it's still suffering overheating problems that the Z3+ had.
I went for the Z5 standard and it gets quite hot doing certain things but hasn't caused it to crash.

I thought these issues were sorted now and this was for previous models? Can you provide more info re overheating/links?

I've just done a live chat with O2 and it would appear that the 12 month unlock rule applies................

Tesco SIMs do indeed work in O2 phones.

I unlocked a couple of Samsung E1080i with them a few years ago but thinking about it, I was an O2 Pay Monthly customer at the time so that's probably why it was free.

Anyone know if O2 will unlock it 'early' (ie. less than a year after purchase) for a fee? If so, how much?

When I tried around Easter this year on a used handset I had bought, O2 checked their records of the original purchase date (via the S/N) and refused to unlock until 1yr had passed. I even asked if there was maybe a penalty charge I could pay to circumvent the delay, but no dice. Tried twice on webchat and once on phone just in case I was unlucky. Had to go via an ebay unlocker in the end.
If you buy it on O2 Refresh (contract), they will unlock immediately for free and you can then cancel the contract without penalty, just pay whatever the phone costs. Lots of threads on here will explain in more detail.

If you're a Pay & Go customer, your O2 mobile can be unlocked 12 months after purchase for a one-off £15 fee which we'll deduct from your airtime balance. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.

I like phones that fit in a jeans pocket, those things are barely 'mobile' phones

oh and you can get same phone on rakuten off chitterchatter for 450 plus 27 pound cashback with quidco and 112.50 back in points and free headphones worth 40 pound.so if you use the points for something you would buy anyhow then it works out at 310 total with the headphones

agreed. I only tend to consider 5inch screens as max on a map phone. Still using my HTC M7 as I can't find anything worthy to replace it with similar form factor.
Battery still lasts me a day.
