Bought mine through ebay for £70 as I wanted a band which could count my steps but also wanted it to be a watch and while i was at it, I thought it may as well be a smart watch. Plumped for the Sony Smartwatch 3
At first the battery life was shocking, thought i had made a mistake as the watch lasted less than a day, but a firmware upgrade sorted that and now easily get 2 days of light use.
So yes, the watch tells the time and it counts my steps so job done but I wanted to unleash the watch and it did not play with IOS so I bought a Sony Xperia Z3 compact and the IPhone 5 now sits as my bedside table device.
Now fully attached to the Sony phone with android wear and this watch rocks.
Phone calls show on watch, as do texts and you can reply to the texts without getting your phone out - Knight Rider style. Drop in some 'Okay Google' and any question is a glance and a question away - Great for currency converting when in the usa and excellent for google maps and driving as the watch shows the next navigation instruction and saying 'Okay Google take me to nearest Walmart' and the watch grabs the information and navigation and opens on the watch and phone.
I could go on about Sky Sports updates, Footy live score updates and many other great features a smart watch adds.
Did I want a smart watch, did I need one?
Nope
Now I have one, would I do without it?
Nope, I am a full convert of the smart watch
Sony's watch has GPS on the watch and its waterproof (1.5mtrs) and dust proof which helps as I work in a very dusty environment and I just wash my watch down when washing my hands and its as good as new.
Like it so much, bought a extra rubber strap and the metal strap which makes the watch look like the dogs nads - Paid £70 for a metal strap but its so worth it.

I've got got the Moto 360 and Sony Smartwatch 3 and I'd suggest:
Moto 360
Positives
- very smart
- loads of stunning community made watchfaces available in the WatchMaker app, look amazing on that almost zero bezel screen
Negatives
- processor is ancient, so can be laggy plus not so future proof
- battery life is terrible if you're a heavy user
- screen is never alwyas on (even with ambient mode)
- doesn't feel like a watch to wear while doing the DIY!
Sony Smartwatch 3
Positives
- feels tough, I never feel I need to take it off to protect it
- great for sport - you can track swimming and running with it
- screen is always on and completely readable in sunlight, so great for digital info-filled watchfaces
- battery should last the day without stressing
Negatives
- not very 'dressy' feeling, optional stainless steel strap is virtually impossible to buy
- shaped like an Apple Watch, so prepare to answer the inevitable question....
- if you like reproduction watchfaces, they don't look great due to the large Bezel and square screen.
tl;dr: If you like bling get the Moto 360, if you value practicality and tech get the Sony SW3....

i agree the metal strap was well worth the money the watch looks really smart then. i was in the same camp as you didnt think i needed one and it would be a novelty but i now couldn't live without it. checking messages discreetly in meetings, alert to my wrist last night that traffic building up on the motorway due to an accident meant i could take a different route and got home much quicker, live football scores plus so much more. Indispensable to me. some great faces out there for the watch as well my current favourite is 'just a minute'

How well does this work with ios? I basically want something to let me know if i have a call , text or whatsapp message.
Edit: does it work over wifi with ios?

It works fine for the things you want it for on IOS but it isn't fully functional like it would be on an android device - with regard the WIFI thing I'm not 100% sure, I have used it on iPhone and it's not a poor experience but it's not as complete, no standalone apps can be used for example

When this first came out I spent ages trying to choose between this and the Moto 360 to replace my pebble.
The pros that made me go for the SW3 were:
- Built in GPS
- Built in NFC (Although not yet activated in Android Wear)
- Great battery life.
I paid £180 at the time of launch. This really is a remarkable watch.
The screen is superb, with its always on display which you can read in any kind of light. I can easily get two days of battery life on a single charge, and then it only takes an hour to fully charge to 100%.
A downside at the time was the lack of HRM - However its not until you read up about people with smartwatches with the HRM that you realise it isnt that accurate. You can easily connect a bluetooth heart rate monitor to the watch, so along with that, the built in GPS and the fact you can store 4GB of music - You can go running without the need for your phone and still track all the important data.
Someone mentioned watchfaces compared to the Moto 360 - Nearly every single watchface available you can use on the SW3. Plus there are apps in which you can very quickly and easily design your own watchface.
Although its a custom watchstrap, you can purchase different ones in a few colours, and there is also now a metal band available.
Overall, for £99 - This is a must buy for anyone looking to join the smartwatch market.

does the wifi connection work well so you don't need to be in the same room as your phone?
danielson1978 to lean_go
21 Nov 15#32
Yeah it works great - I can be at work and leave my phone at home and still get notifications on my watch as long as it has been connected to both the WIFI networks previously, it is especially useful if your phone is on charge in another room and the Bluetooth doesn't stretch that far

I really like the look of this, shame it doesn't have a microsd slot though to store my music collection, that'll be the selling point for me as I want something for the gym where I don't have to keep my phone on me.

Bought this 2 weeks ago from PCWorld for £109. Cracking bit of kit that lasts a couple of days on a single charge and uses standard micro USB cable, so not having to carry more cables and chargers when you are away from home for a while. Often something overlooked when choosing a smartwatch.

I had one, wanted to like but didn't. Battery issues, crashing and fitness apps that you want to use with this on android not compatible, like myfitness app. Flubit was 87.00 quid for me. Hot for price from normal retailer but proceed with caution.

Sony Smartwach 3 is a great device, good battery life, good features and looks ok depending on what you are doing with it, I use it only for work (work in a gym) and it doesn't look out of place as it has a "sporty" look but admittedly it isn't very flash.
It is getting a bit old tech now but there is honestly nothing wrong with the speed of the watch, I'm not sure what good putting a new processor or more memory in it would do - The only small complaint is the GPS isn't great, the distances are out and it's lost signal a few times leaving me frustratingly trying to track my runs, It doesn't have a Heart rate monitor but for me that's a gimmick, it doesn't measure that accurately under exercise conditions and why do you need to know your resting heart rate every 5 minutes?
For anyone who isn't aware ALL android wear watches run the same OS, there is nothing different in android wear for the Moto 360 or the SW3 it just boils down to personal preference and things like battery life etc..
