Put in a bag of rice and shove it in the airing cupboard - works just as well.

I haven't seen this version, but bought one online a while ago.
it was like a sealed food bag with some of those damp/dehumidifying sachets in like you get with shoes and electronics.
worked well the one I had, brought my tablet back to 100%, had an annoying water bubble in the screen layers, after a shower reading outside, fine now. that version worked great.
I'd assume* that this would be similar for phone dropped in water etc.

Ok I've just opened it up, it's a sealable pouch with moisture absorbing granules. Instructions state. to use ASAP, seal affected item and leave for a minimum of 24 - 48 hours for a phone/ tablet respectively.

The rice thing is a bit of a myth. Rice doesn't 'draw' moisture out. You'd be just as well putting the phone in a warm area, unsealed. That's not to say that it won't still work if you use rice, just that the rice is a bit unnecessary.

Not convinced this will save your phone in the long run as unless you dropped your phone in distilled water there will be salts etc. left behind which in the long term will corrode the electronics.
As for the "rice is cheaper" argument, 8oz of rice is usually around 50p so you're saving 50p on something your'e unlikely to need anyway. Also unless you're mad you won't find you've eaten this kit leaving none when you most need it. Probably worth keeping one in the car for emergencies.
