In any case a fairly decent price for this in my opinion
One of the greatest films of all time Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai has influenced the work of director's from George Lucas to Steven Spielberg, and spawned remakes, such as John Sturges acclaimed The Magnificent Seven.
With their village raided every year by vicious bandits, a group of peasants hire seven warriors to protect them. Initially met with suspicion the warriors eventually gain the trust of the peasants and they join forces to face the bandits
This Blu-ray edition includes alternative presentations of the film, a new and exclusive interview with Asian-cinema expert Tony Rayns, and the film's original Japanese trailer.

I completely forgot! Is that a DVD or blu-ray? Looks like a blu-ray cover (sorry for me being stupid!) If it's £8 for the blu-ray I'll need to add it to the 'presents for myself' pile. Oops...

From that set, I'd only seen Aguirre, Nosferatu and Fitzcarraldo before I bought it. Every single film in the set has been impeccably remastered, with loads of great extras, including the Les Blank's films 'Burden of Dreams' and 'Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe'. The packaging's a bit dodgy but it's the discs you'll want to get!

Also, in that photo posted I can see the Werner Herzog Collection, Eyes Without a Face and Black Girl/Borom Sarret...surely three of the best and most impressive BFI releases to date, and all worth owning.

And eventually I'll pick up that Werner Herzog Collection, I'd seen parts of Aguirre and the new transfer whopped the backside of my old DVD!

If people are looking to get this, I'd highly advise getting the full BFI Kurosawa Samurai Collection box set instead. The transfers for all 4 other films in the set (Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro) are actually better than Seven Samurai. It would also work out well per-film, and you can't buy any of the others separately (yet, but there don't seem to be any plans for separate releases of the discs).
BFI's release of Rashomon, on the other hand, has an outstanding transfer (and also happens to be my favourite Kurosawa). It's a recent release (September 2015), and should be about £10.99 from HMV or £11 from Fopp...and is worth every penny in my opinion. The disc is arguably better than Criterion's, and much more affordable. It's also a better transfer than any other Kurosawa disc released in the UK to date.

"Rashomon" was the first Kurosawa I ever watched, and it's also my favourite. Glad to hear the BFI release is well worth the money, may pick it up myself when it goes sub-£10! And yeah, the Samurai collection is well worth money!

My mistake, it is the DVD! I shall pop into the Glasgow branch tomorrow and have a look myself.

There were some Toshiba players a few years back that could be made blu-ray region free with quick firmware upgrade! Got one from Richer Sounds for around £40 and it was a bargain! There's sellers that have sold them on eBay for upward of £130... Apparently there's a few other models that can also be region-free'd simply.
Wish Criterion and all other companies would ditch the region coding, it's an outdated system that probably causes more piracy than it stops!

I am assuming you like me are film mad and paid a fortune for a chipped Blu ray player to make it multi region. But most Brits have region locked players so can not enjoy Criterion discs.
That's is the main reason I got mine chipped. I now have 25 Criterion blu's.
But yes to most Europeans they are pointless.

Shame there's no official review on blu-ray.com of the UK release (which is different to the Criterion disc) but the user reviews give it 3 to 3.5 for the video quality. Apparently the Criterion release is the best out there...
Still, voted hot for the price and the movie.
Also, if you can't get to Fopp and fancy dipping your feet into Kurosawa, this box is a pretty good buy: Kurosawa: The Samurai Collection Blu-ray
Throw on the WELCOME code for new customers and you'll get that box for £23.40, £4.68 a film!

Don't know if you're in Liverpool (going off the badge, ynwa btw) but Liverpool badly needs a Fopp. Not had a good record store in Liverpool since the old Virgin Megastores. Fopp one of the best shops in Manchester. Plenty of great films in there atm on Blu Ray for £6.
