I'm a bit surprised by the sniffy comments from some about this TV. Its ultimately Samsungs entry level range so if you really want top end features buy a top end TV and pay a top end price.
If other TVs offer more functionality with the same size for the same price or less then great, show us the links.
However for the price, i have to say i find this a VERY impressive TV.

[/quote]I'm a massive Sony fan, but the operating system they use has nothing but bad reviews from consumers, and they have been promising they will fix it with updates for about a year.
It's really put me off, and pushed me to Samsungs door. Though I believe all things are not quite complete there with regard to bugs in Netflix and Amazon Prime apps.
My biggest worry is Sony seem to just ignore faults with their phones and just rush out the next model to forget about the last one. Let's hope they don't go the same way with the TVs[/quote]
That's a worry about their phones although a mate of mine was having some trouble with his experia and I had a look. I said to him I can't believe that Sony have taken android and ruined it or words to that effect. Am not too concerned regarding the android smart apps on the tv as I doubt I will use it much. To be honest I am leaning towards the Sony KDL50W809CBU. I have been looking at it now for a couple of weeks now. It's a good price at £549.00 and only £50.00 more than I paid for my 50LB650v 10 months ago. No comparison in my opinion looking at the Sony reviews in relation to picture quality.
I was thinking about the LG 49UF850V as it is also a good price but......it's a more expensive version of my old LG which will have the same problems, i.e. menu system is awful compared to how LG's used to be. Don't like webos and the way it works although it is quite quick. Took me ages to find out how to eject an external usb source. The satellite tuner is not available through inputs and you access it through the tv guide. In fact all the bad points that frustrate me about my old LG will still be there with a new one no matter how good the picture quality or how good value it is. The main thing I hate with the LG is its inability to stop the judder on slow movement. Fast is fine. Athletics, racing, F1 are all good but watching normal tv, sitcoms etc there are times when the judder is very bad but its always the same programmes.
Was having a look at the LG 49UF770V today which is the model below the 850v and it was next to the Sony. I put them both on BBC1 and the Sony was better. It's all well and good the retailers having the manufacturers usb sticks playing a nice HD or UHD recording but in reality those of us who can't stream and don't have sky HD still watch programmes in SD which is where I always rate a tv.
I won't be getting sky 4k and I can't stream Netflix until they decide to put fibre where I live. Until then a 1080 will be fine (I hope).

Went to pick mine up but then saw the LG 55UF850V (same 55", 4k, but the LG is also 3D) for the same price - £849 without any additional £50 discount. They wouldn't budge on the prices at all. They won't price batch John Lewis as they are OOS and they never price match against Richer Sounds apparently.
To me the picture quality was comparable (playing the same Samsung demo videos, so a fair comparison), but in addition to the 3D the LG had front-facing speakers along the bottom which is ideal as I am going to wall mount. Also after seeing the Samsung in the store I wasn't too impressed with the plasticy silver surround and the remote looked a bit basic compared to the LG wii-mote style control.
The lack of the £50 discount code also removes any ambiguity with the Quidco.

thought you paid when you picked up so the amount will be £50 less than claimed on-line, therefore when quidco ask the retailer for confirmation it may show discount applied and quidco won't pay, that's my experience anyway...that's if you can get to a store to pick up today, none have any within a 50 mile radius here

quidco not going to track if you use the £50 voucher code:
I can confirm that cashback isn't paid on purchases if a voucher or discount code is applied that isn't provided on the Quidco website, I can see that this offer isn't currently listed on the Quidco website so if this was applied to your purchase then is it likely that this will invalidate the cashback for this purchase unfortunately.

Comparing to the amount of dross transmitted then you have a point but considering a large amount of 4k stuff is Grammy nominated and winners its more quality over quantity - Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Transparent, House Of Cards etc etc.

I knew you'd be in here somewhere.
And yes, in the grand scheme of things, a few hundred hours of 4k content (most of which is old/repeats anyway) isn't much. As a proportion of EVERYTHING available these days? I'd say still sub 1%.
You really don't understand the meaning of "mainstream" do you? Jeez, even 4k.com admit the amount is "limited" at the moment!
It's a decent price for the TV it is. But (as I said on other threads), you're still in early adopter territory for the moment. I'll keep waiting ....

I believe the update is next month. There are glitches yes and complaints in relation to android and the tv's crashing with restart needed but I am sure that Sony will sort this. I am a massive android fan and wouldn't even look at anything else for an OS for a smartphone but have yet to try android tv. It could be the way forward or it could be as much as a fail as LG's WEBOS 01. Nice feature being able to move the apps around but that's all I like and no longer use my tv as a smart tv as it just takes too long to boot.
I am willing to try Android. With the addition of Youview the Sony will only improve. No doubt the Samsung will be perfect out of the box but I have had Youview for the last 18 months and like it. If they don't fix it you still have a Sony tv with a 120Hz panel no doubt supplied by AU Optronics compared to a 60Hz panel supplied by BOE. Whether Samsung can make the processing work to make the screen look as good as the Sony will be down to the individual user's opinion. I find some technical reviews can be biased and based on clever test equipment compared with how an image is to the naked eye. A similar topic of conversation when compared the S6 camera to the LG G4's camera on the smartphones. Both great phones. Both excellent reviews. Some say S6 has the edge. This G4 owner says not as I am happy with the G4. If the S6 is better would I see it, possibly not and the same for tv reviews.
If you like the Samsung buy it. Same goes for the Sony but for me I might just have a gamble and buy the Sony but only after I tried one in the shop first as the negative reviews for Sony android tv's are quite disappointing where the Samsung will just work as intended.

I had the 49 ins version of the Sony which i returned due to the poor picture quality and upscaling, the Samsung UE50JU6800 which i now own knocks spots of the Sony in pretty much every department apart from the stand! The Sony looks great in the shop until you get it home , in the real world with sd and hd i dont rate it at all. You have only got to read through some of the Sony forums to find all the unhappy owners.
According to rtings.com all sony tv's in the current range that they have tested are 120Hz. According to another review regarding this tv it is only 60Hz despite its 1400 PQI. I would have a look at both in Currys and decide. For smart apps, players etc it would be the Samsung but for my next tv I will be discounting the smart side of things and just go for which looks best to me. That is the most important thing. Not processing rates, how many catch up players it has etc etc. It will be the quality of the screen in store on normal tv, not the manufacturers usb feed. In my Currys they have sky and so do Richer Sounds. I watch more tv on freeview than in any other format so best in store will work for me.
I have looked at both of these tv's but overall I prefer the picture quality of the LG UF770V. Only thing with the LG is I hate the menu system and user interface. My present LG still frustrates me so choosing would be an issue. I have never owned a Sony tv so that may be the deciding factor but on S21.com they didn't score very high on their tests. I maybe wouldn't let that worry me as on the 50" version of the Samsung they changed the rating from 4 stars to 5 stars just because it had come down in price. I don't think that's relevant as quality is the most important for me and I would pay £100.00 more or so for something that was better.

According to rtings.com the 6400 is a 60Hz tv. They don't have the 6800 on test but the 6700 was also 60Hz. They only tv's in their review which are 120Hz in the 6000 series are the 6200 and 6300. How are their PQi's in relation to the 6800.
pgilc1 to Smartguy1
24 Nov 15#79
PQI isnt just about processing rate - it takes into account contract, brightness, noise, etc.
Thus a TV with a PQI rating of 1400 will have a better picture than one with a rating of 900.
pedant99
24 Nov 15#76
you said it!
Smartguy1
23 Nov 15#74
Isn't all this processing rate just a load of rubbish as manufacturers keep increasing and increasing these yet in real terms they still only come out to 60Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, in fact the same as they had last year yet I see Samsung, Sony and LG have all increased these figure from where they were last year. My own LG just over a year old was advertised as having motion clarity of 500 yet it's replacement is 900. The same with samsung and sony. It's just figures based on whatever they want, change of the parameters to make it look better on paper. Technology hasn't moved on that much in 12 months but the manufacturers numbers for screen processing has.
Smartguy1
23 Nov 152#73
How long did it take to work that out. Fantastic answer though. Only problem is if I upgraded from my 50" to a 55 I would just end up sitting 21% further away lol.
I actually upgraded from an old 47" to a 50" in January and made sure I didn't make the mistake that I suppose many do in that if you have an old lcd with a large bezel you can go for a bigger tv for the same overall size. My 50" tv is the same width as my old 47" and stands 2" shorter !! but has 3" of extra screen. It sat in my dining room for 3 weeks as I kept thinking should I have got the 55" which was the same height as my old 47" but 4" wider. In the end I kept the 50" but look at it where I normally sit and think it's too big but when I sit on the other settee I think its too small. And they say its women you can never please lol.
pgilc1
23 Nov 151#72
I "think" this is the new, better model of that one.
The PQI rating - Picture Quality Index of the 6400 is just 900, compared to 1400 on the new model, although the 6400 does seem to get good reviews. 6800 is amazing though.

Been reading quite a bit about panels, lotteries etc etc. Nothing wrong with the BOE panels from what I have been reading. It seems that all the people on the american websites insist on having a samsung panel. It would also appear that the panel code is on the boxes on their tv's but haven't seen that here. Allegedly you can look through the vents in the back of the tv around where the serial number sticker is and they have the panel code, eg TH01, US01 etc on the inside.
Anyway if the UK version is the same as for all Europe it would appear there is no panel lottery on the JU6800 50" & 55" as there is only one manufacturer listed for both.
Whilst tests using technical equipment may state one panel manufacturer maybe better than another I find the best test is my own eyesight. A test which no doubt came in very useful for the purchase of your new tv. It is one that is very much on my shopping list.

The manufacturers certainly know how to present their tv's well in the shop don't they when they are running at their 4k usb stick. Just remember it's never going to look that good in your house when viewing sky (for now) and freeview but at least if you tootle down to Richer Sounds and their store has sky like mine does, you will be able to see properly what you are buying in SD, HD and 4k.
For the record and according to a samsung parts supplier in Holland the 55" for over there has a panel made by some company called BOE based in China. Not sure about UK and wonder if Samsung would want to answer the question.

I almost pulled the trigger on this TV when in Curry's earlier. They didn't have the stock so stuck until next weekend. The chap didnt expect it feature in the Black Friday sales - he pointed to the boxes upon boxes of older sets at the ready stacked at the back as the likely sales weekend options!
Anyway, I was blown away by the image and colour quality on this set. Really impressed - the 4K demonstration was pretty stunning to be honest. I only noticed the very occasional blur/glitch but as streaming from USB I figured it most likely to do with that (no problems when on other demonstrations).

Currys had this for £899 for the whole of this week so I don't see how this is any different. Hopefully they will drop, not in a rush but definitely keeping my eyes on both TV's. How are you finding your this TV?

This is more akin to Sony's x80c, as both are entry level. The x85x is a step up.

Invariably, yes. It will drop in price. However it depends how long you want to wait.
This seems to be a new price drop (it was £999 last month from the major retailers when we bought ours), so I dont think there will be another drop imminently

Depends how you define "top notch". This is the entry level model at an entry level price, however it will run rings round most TVs it is likely to be replacing in any household.
I think its a fantastic TV. However there are other TVs that are fractionally better, costing more. You pays your money...

Don't forget that anyone with an iPhone 6S can record video in 4K so for me having a to to watch the 4K family videos on is great even if there isn't a lot of to content out there yet. Just a matter of time for that.

Review from that thread of the 55....
"I bought the UE55JU6800K last Thursday from John Lewis. With the £70 extra care cover. So, 5 years warranty, and 5 years extra care. Seemed like the only option. The extra cover from Currys was 250 pounds or so.
The TV looks amazing, played around with the settings and settled on the following (but they may change...)
Picture Mode - Movie
Backlight - 10
Contrast - 90
Brightness - 45
Sharpness - 0
Colour - 52
Tint - 50/50
Colour tone - Warm2
Digital Clean View - Off
MPEG Noise Filter - Off
HDMI Black level - Auto
Auto Motion Plus - Off
Colour Space – Auto
I have a NAS Drive with all my movies and TV shows on, which it picks up from DLNA. I have a Samsung sound bar, which connects wirelessly with Bluetooth.
XboxOne games look superb, playing Diablo 3, and GTA V, both look amazing, the level of detail makes it like a playing new games.
Football is great, especially in HD.
I use the Peel remote control on my Samsung S6 Edge as the remote.
Really can't fault the TV, although there was a little back light bleed in the bottom right and left hand corners. But with the adjustments made above, its virtually disappeared.
3 days after I bought it from JL for £999 it dropped by £100. I went back on Tuesday, and they refunded it straight away.
At £899 its an absolute steal."

There are a lot of comments on other websites saying that the picture on the 55ins is nowhere near as good as the 50ins (which i have just bought) due to the panel being made by a 3rd party.

We have the 55 inch - just bought it last month and i have to say the picture is absolutely fantastic.
Of note though, Samsung give all their TVs a PQI (Picture Quality Index) rating, and both the 50 inch variant and the 55 inch variant have the same rating of 1400.
I'd go further and say the picture quality of the 55 is stunning.

The JU6800 is the one with 2 different manufacturers for the panels as far as I am aware. The 50" and 60" are VA panels and the 55" is IPS.

Its UE50JU6800 i got mine from Curry's for £699 with 5 year guarantee and 6 months of Netflix free the guy in Curry's tells me the 5 year guarantee is done by Samsung themselves which has got to be better than the Curry's one! I have owned both Sony and LG equivalents in the last couple of months (both went wrong and had bad picture quality) and the Samsung is far superior to either of those, The upscaling on HD is amazing.

^ that's what their website says. Richer Sounds is now £799. When I go to collect from Currys this evening I'll see if I can knock another £50 off, or possibly just walk away.
I'm always wary of these cashback deals when a high value item is on offer. Been stung in the past - another affiliate tracked the cashback currys claimed.
Costco now offering this for £799.
Tried instore at John Lewis but alas no stock! Not suprising, they'll probably have stock tommorow when it goes back to 899
I can confirm that cashback isn't paid on purchases if a voucher or discount code is applied that isn't provided on the Quidco website, I can see that this offer isn't currently listed on the Quidco website so if this was applied to your purchase then is it likely that this will invalidate the cashback for this purchase unfortunately.
brings it to ~743
Any ideas if there is another deal like this floating about, (pretty please)?

I knew you'd be in here somewhere.
And yes, in the grand scheme of things, a few hundred hours of 4k content (most of which is old/repeats anyway) isn't much. As a proportion of EVERYTHING available these days? I'd say still sub 1%.
You really don't understand the meaning of "mainstream" do you? Jeez, even 4k.com admit the amount is "limited" at the moment!
http://4k.com/movies/
It's a decent price for the TV it is. But (as I said on other threads), you're still in early adopter territory for the moment. I'll keep waiting ....
How long ago was this? Apparently Sony with andriod has improved some what with more updates coming. I'm thinking like you say best bet is to view both panels in store.
most people dont understand/use or appreciate 4k

I have looked at both of these tv's but overall I prefer the picture quality of the LG UF770V. Only thing with the LG is I hate the menu system and user interface. My present LG still frustrates me so choosing would be an issue. I have never owned a Sony tv so that may be the deciding factor but on S21.com they didn't score very high on their tests. I maybe wouldn't let that worry me as on the 50" version of the Samsung they changed the rating from 4 stars to 5 stars just because it had come down in price. I don't think that's relevant as quality is the most important for me and I would pay £100.00 more or so for something that was better.

http://www.simplyelectricals.co.uk/blog/samsung-pqi-technology-explained
Thus a TV with a PQI rating of 1400 will have a better picture than one with a rating of 900.
The PQI rating - Picture Quality Index of the 6400 is just 900, compared to 1400 on the new model, although the 6400 does seem to get good reviews. 6800 is amazing though.

I have just bought the new Panasonic VIERA TX55CX680B for £899 from Richer Sounds and it has a 6 year warranty, it's amazing!!! Better than the Samsung in my opinion.
For the record and according to a samsung parts supplier in Holland the 55" for over there has a panel made by some company called BOE based in China. Not sure about UK and wonder if Samsung would want to answer the question.
Anyway, I was blown away by the image and colour quality on this set. Really impressed - the 4K demonstration was pretty stunning to be honest. I only noticed the very occasional blur/glitch but as streaming from USB I figured it most likely to do with that (no problems when on other demonstrations).
I think the merit in this deal is the 5 year warranty and not having to risk dealing with PC / World Currys after sales service?
