I haven't been keeping up with tvs recently, but from the last thread on this (when it was a whole pound more expensive) I gathered that this could be one of two different types of panel. One is really good, whereas one is not. Has anybody managed to establish which one of the two it is? I'm not actually convinced it makes any difference to me, but I'm just interested.

The 55" in Holland has a panel by BOE. No other panel manufacturers listed for this model although the last 4 letters for the dutch version is different to ours.
UE55JU6800WXXN = Dutch version
UE55JU6800KXXU = UK
It would appear the 50" version of this tv has the Innolux panel (in Holland)
Panels may be different for the UK but I suppose that may depend where they are made for both markets. Or it may make no difference at all.
The only way to tell for sure is someone who has bought one to access their service menu and provide the option or type code. Or to cheekily access one on demo in the stores.
We could just ask Samsung to confirm. Surely under the Freedom of Information Act they have a legal duty to tell us f we ask which panel or panel are in any of their models.

Yes I read that also. Outstanding for the 50" and excellent for the 55". I also looked at the LG UF770v which was at the bottom of my list and they only gave that 3 stars.
Panasonic 680B and 700B have outstanding also with Sony at 3 to 4 star depending on the model.

55" have bad screen made by china, 50" is made by samsung. Shame, because is with only one old basic remote controll
Smartguy1 to marjian
23 Nov 15#24
According to samsung parts company in Holland the 50" sold over there has the Innolux (Chi Mei) panel and not samsung Part number of the only panel listed is BN95-02447B INX;CY-TJ050HGNV2V,JS6900,PT
The INX in the panel code would indicate this is an Innolux panel and not Samsung. Obviously the models shipped over here have a slightly different model number and therefore perhaps a different panel but until such time people who have bought them can confirm a panel code, then it would seem likely that the models shipped here would be the same as Holland.
Smartguy1
23 Nov 15#23
Haha, yes I know that lol but even if it did cover private or corporate companies they would still find some excuse not to give us the info though looking at some american forums it would appear they have the panel codes stamped on the boxes. It may make some difference to some but at the end of the day if it looks good to the user then that is all that counts, and it's reliability of course.
TacticalTimbo
23 Nov 15#25
So essentially this is £700 of cheap Taiwanese panel!? Not cool if so, because beyond the glossy plastic and bubbly UI's, it's the screen itself that matters...
trickytree1984
23 Nov 15#26
Are you sure. Richer sounds says no

23 Nov 15#28
I've generally held Samsung in higher regard than most other brands, but have a soft spot for Sony, as the contrast seems great on the VA panels they use.
But you will also find some comments contradicting this and even the initial research that led to this conclusion was sketchy at best. It has not come from Samsung. You will also find some people that have had bad experiences with the 50 inch whilst others have had good experiences with the 55 inch and vice-versa.
So draw your own conclusions. But if you read the whole of the thread you should discover there is no outright conclusion that the 55 inch is worse than the 50.

I don't particularly care what panel my 50ins has got as i am blown away by the picture quality and surely that's what matters with a tv? As i have paid for a Samsung it would be comforting to know it has a Samsung panel in it but as long as its reliable that's all that really concerns me.
Smartguy1 to Richiano
24 Nov 15#42
Well said. I think there is too much emphasis on the panels and who makes them unless you can afford an OLED. What matters most is how the tv looks to the user. If a tv pictures looks good to you in the shop then it doesn't matter who makes the panel. It is not just the panel that makes a good tv. If Vestel used nothing but Samsung panels in their tv's would they be producing a better tv. I doubt it.

Just make it simple IPS panels got good color uniformity but lacks of Black =Grey!!
VA panels are good with Color and Black butt some experts say that colors are over the top Grass greener then it actually is!
TN panels are poor for color and blacks butt are cheap to produce and fast for gaming!
So if you are comparing a tv in saloon and your pc monitor, laptop screen, tablet ,Ipad or smartphone you get a different jugment! For my Eyes VA Is better then IPS. I was blown away by Sony KD65x8509cb and Oleds which are coming down in price!

You just made a very good point. If manufacturers really wanted to give us a true smart tv then that is what they should have done. Smart apps are slow on tv's as well as accessing the internet. The new LG Webos tv's are even slow to change the channel!! In my opinion manufacturers need to improve the current quality of the present tv's before anything else. Maybe in the high end tv's over say £1500.00 they probably have but at the budget and mid-range end we are getting a slow product. I have a basic tab which access apps and the internet much faster than my tv costing 5 times as much.
Imagine if next year Vestel brings out a tv that meets the needs you mention. Now that is something that will finally give them brand status. For now though it appears that a television will only ever be good at what it was designed to be and that is a television.

What puts me off smart tellies is my total lack of faith that the manufacturers will continue supporting OS updates beyond about a maximum of a year and a half, if the same manufacturer’s track record with similarly technology-endowed phones is anything to go by.

Yes, all those high numbers by Samsung trying to confuse the consumer. PQi is double to whatever they were using last year yet the tv is still only 60Hz in real terms which is what we all want to know. Why can't manufacturers just be honest. It may do them some favours as well as sales. Don't forget we had 100Hz tv's 20 years ago!! My LG is 100Hz and it wasn't a lot of money, £499.00 for a 50".

Haha, me too but my choice was worse. I also put the Sony KDL-50W8009c in the mix also making it worse. I am not bothered about 4k as I can't stream it. There isn't any definite date for UHD on freeview and I don't have sky anymore.
In my local Currys they have all three of my choices on the same row, well nearly. The LG is the UF770v but I doubt there is much difference. They also have the tv's as all tv's should be showed and that is plugged into terrestrial tv.
Out of the three tv's on display the Samsung was the most expensive and the worse one viewing televisions on standard definition. Please don't tell me this has something to do with the Currys loop. The LG next to it was on the same feed and it was better than the Samsung. For this reason alone the Samsung would be off my list. On BBC1 HD their was little difference. LG was set to a standard VIVID setting and I think the Samsung was Dynamic. Neither tv showed better picture quality than my own 1080 LG which is just under a year old.
The best tv for picture quality in standard definition was easily the Sony. It looked smooth whilst the LG and Samsung looked a little unfinished around the edges. On BBC1 HD the Sony looked more natural but obviously due to the settings but again I would favour Sony. No difference between LG and Samsung.
When I tried to enter the Samsung menu it was slow to respond and put me off. The LG however was surprisingly quick. I have a WEBOS tv which is slow to respond and see that LG have improved this area. I also like the magic remote that comes with the tv but the wife hated it. I went and got a standard remote off another tv to scroll through the menu. Not sure if it ships with a standard remote also but it could do with one.
The Sony scrolled through the tv's menus faster than the LG and Samsung and wins again. The only problem here though for me is our tv goes on a unit and the Sony stand looks likes it's been designed by someone who does a bit of metalwork in their shed. It is awful. They need to ditch it because the stand alone puts me off buying. Also the remote is terrible. It's too small and not very well laid out. The remote has a netflix and football button. Not everyone has Netflix and not everyone likes or is into football. Obviously the Japanese are mis-informed.
So which tv would I pick. Been doing this for over a week now and had all three reserved at Currys at some point. The LG and Sony are a true 100/120Hz panel. It is rumoured the Samsung is only 60Hz but no technical reviewer has confirmed. Probably won't make any difference at 4k but could be the reason why the Samsung wasn't as good on standard definition. The LG was no better than my current LG where the picture at times looks a little unfinished. The Sony had the best picture, was the fastest to respond through the menus but the stand and the remote are off-putting.
The Sony clearly had the best picture out of the three for standard definition. Sony again for me in high definition but if you want 4K then for me it would be the LG. Not much to choose between LG and Samsung but I liked the magic remote. I would buy a standard remote to go with it. It's 50 quid cheaper and although I find the menu system on LG's a little irritating I found the Samsung slow.

The 5 year guarantee should be on your receipt from what i understand, however mine only showed 12 months so after sending Currys customer service an email i finally got an answer a week later saying that because i got 3 months free on the knowhow care plan when i bought the tv it cancelled out the 5 year guarantee but Currys have apologised and i they tell me i will receive the documents for the 5 year guarantee through the post.

How very convenient. I wonder just how many people they have done that to and bear in mind that in 2, 3 or 4 years time how will you be able to prove that they sold it with a 5 year warranty. I tried to find Currys TV Christmas advert from last year as the tv I bought was mis-sold by them but trying to prove it became difficult so gave up in the end. Google doesn't keep cached pages from that time so I couldn't prove my case. I always make sure now that I take a screenshot of any advert on high value items now because if you haven't got proof you may struggle.

RE: 5 year warranty.
I chased and chased Curry's for this to finally get a bit of paper in the post stating I have a 5 year warranty. This was after them telling me on 3 occasions that I would receive it within 28 days and in the last that it would be emailed with the hour. I received no email but did get the letter 3 days. Persevere! As someone else said, How many will need this in 2, 3, 4 years have nothing to go on?

Maybe it's maybe me (previous retail employment) but unless I have it in writing, which I have now, I wouldn't be sure that in 5 years time I would get anywhere if something went wrong. In the phonecalls and emails Currys did keep saying that the 5 year guarantee edocuments should've been attached to online order confirmation/invoice (which they weren't) or in other calls, that it is standard to email them after???? The Sony had the best picture, was the fastest to respond through the menus but the stand and the remote are off-putting.
The Sony clearly had the best picture out of the three for standard definition. Sony again for me in high definition but if you want 4K then for me it would be the LG. Not much to choose between LG and Samsung but I liked the magic remote. I would buy a standard remote to go with it. It's 50 quid cheaper and although I find the menu system on LG's a little irritating I found the Samsung slow.
As a side note, my tracked cashbook at £75.62 is showing no signs of becoming payable...
