See even the Hobgoblin has been reduced from 5.2 abv to 4.5abv. When something is right, along they come and spoil it.

I like a drop of McEwan's Champion's Ale now and again at 7.3%, likewise, I won't be too pleased if they drop that as I enjoy two or three on occasions.

4.1% Not that nice when on cask in the pub!
Original made by Morlands in West Ilsley then moved to Abingdon (Berkshire) now brewed by Abbott in Bury St. Edmunds.

Its 4.2 in cask but still 5.2 in bottles. Got a hobgoblin gold keg in tesco watford yesterday for £8.

Same thing happened to Stella, dropped from 5.2 to 4.9 I think, from what I've been told beers over 5% have to be taxed more, I could be wrong, it's happened before and will likely happen again,
Correct, even more recently Titanic Plum Porter has dropped to 4.9% because of its popularity and the tax on 5% and over beers.

Yes, 4.8. Budweiser dropped from 5.0 to 4.8 several years ago. I've read something also about it being due to higher tax.

Also kegs tend to be lower abv than bottles, the aforementioned 'Broadside' is 4.3% in 5l keg and much higher in bottles, kegs have a shorter lifespan than bottles, the Adnams ones are usually only 2-3 months or so, the beer is 'live' or something like that, a short Internet search would probably give me definitive answers, but I prefer to speculate and spread confusion......

No it isn't, the beer in Kegs is the same that goes into most bottling -pasteurised. Beer is only 'live' in bottles when it's marked conditioned. If beer is live in a keg, it isn't a keg its a cask and is slightly different in design in being vented at the side (which becomes the top when racked) so the beer (actually the yeast) can breath.
A keg will generally last as long as a can will until its opened which then will then last a week or two depending on where stored, temp and whether you close the top vent after every pour or not. Just be aware that some beers are meant to be enjoyed relatively fresh, however with poor mass produced stuff like this, that shouldn't be an issue...

Not surprised it's down to £7.50. Can get quality Saltaire Brewery beers in Kegs for around £15 -18 depending on the brew and ABV around by me but then again the actual brewery is less than 5 miles away...

I'm sure you're correct in some quarters but with regards to Adnams Broadside, mini 5l casks vs bottles, current batch of casks are 4.7% with a best before date of 22.12.15, whereas the bottles are 6.3% and do not list a best before date, so I would suggest they are variants of the same beer.

Agree entirely. Good drop the Champion ale. Like the King Goblin at 6.6abv Which are four for a fiver in Asda .Probably change that to lemonade strength before long.

You're welcome mate. Pity there was only the one but enough for a couple of evenings. Or one major one. Mind you I only got two kegs. Keep one for Xmas, drinking the other as I speak watching the football.

Lovely drink and they will struggle to bring it down enough to beat the 5% tax threshold given it would need a 2.4% drop. There would be a riot. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cask or conditioned has a limited life because its alive, its still brewing. Smaller Brewers tend to make brews specifically for where they are going to end up, be it in pubs ,cans or bottles - most use canning and bottling plants as they don't have the facilities on site so a tanker turns up and takes the entire brew away to be canned or bottled and usually the distributed by the plants own network.
