5.5-inch octa-core MT6753 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 2,500mAh battery, support for 128GB microSD cards, 13Mpx Sony sensor, dual SIM, dual WiFi, GPS, etc., only 8mm thick. Basically, a bigger battery and more RAM than the iPhone 6s for £80 (plus VAT import, presumably).

"Coming soon" though, but worth checking out and reserving.

I hope you guys are seeing what`s happening here. I predict this time next year the UK market will be flooded with Xiaomi, Umi, Meizu, Lenovo, Doogee & all the other unknown branded phones/electronics. At incredibly budget prices. The IPhones, S6`s & Z3`s at £600 will be a thing of the past. I give Apple one more year to make a 50 billion dollar profit. The Chinese are coming.....

Sure, I got it new from ebay(UK seller) for £159, but they are on there for £139 now Linky
Also consider the P8000, although being a tad thicker, it has a better battery(same spec) and is cheaper at £119 Linky#2

ok. I bought the flagship model. The UMI Zero. It was hailed as a flagship killer. It was awful. Build quality 1st. The softest aluminium you can imagine, supposed Gorilla Glass 3! No way it had that. Battery was awful, half a day with normal usage, the non removable batter swelled and rather than take it back and exchange..... They sent me a new non removable battery and a guide on how to put in the new one. The phone was less than 6 weeks old. Warranty is worth nothing. Plagued with random reboots, upto 6 per day. Phone would freeze regular. No over the air updates as it's rooted. So it's upto you to side load updates via pc. Headphone quality was god awful. Camera interface was rotten too. Umi simply not interested in after care. I'm not anti Chinese phone. Wife has a DooGee X5 pro, great wee phone. But umi..... No hateful

Showing as stock due Dec 15th.
So realistically its unlikely to be despatched until mid January ( China phones never meet their release date, and then they have all the back orders to work through).
Expect a long wait for this one - remember its Chinese new year at the beginning of Feb when all Chinese factories/stores and couriers shut down for a week. This phone could hit that delay too.

Just saying "Don't do it" isn't helpful, why should we not buy Umi? I'm betting that 99.9% of people who read that comment (myself included) have no idea who you are and therefore have no reason to trust you. Without telling us your reason, it's just a statement open to interpretation by the reader: is it because you have evidence of Umi using the collateral to reincarnate Hitler as a part man, part dinosaur, part robot, cyborg killing machine? That would certainly be an excellent reason to not give them my hard earned cash.

Or perhaps, more realistically, you had a bad experience with one of their phone and/or the company? If it was an issue with a phone, details! If it was an issue with the company, again - details!

Regarding prices etc, I know that I will not be buying another Samsung or even an iPhone at the stupid prices they selling at.

The Doogee F5 I bought a couple of weeks ago is better than an iPhone 5s according to a phone comparison site I looked at last week, and got it for a fraction of the price!
umataro

the main difference is that with lg/samsung/sony/motorola, you get robots doing the soldering. that makes quality consistent. with these cheapo chinese phones, there's a lot of hand soldering going on. search for "doogee assembly line" on youtube if you want to see for yourself. there was a similar video for elephone but it's been pulled.

the second significant difference is that with crappy Mediatek chips, mediatek release completely closed android and manufacturers only skin it and/or add a few packages. they have no influence over what android upgrades each soc (chip) gets and they're at mediatek's mercy. i think it's obvious it is not in mediatek's interest to support a single soc over multiple versions of android (fewer sales). hence no cyanogenmod for chinese phones (elephone p7000 was an exception, but thanks to mediatek's binary blobs in linux kernel, cyanogenmod 12.1 was the first and last supported version).

that is why it is usually worth paying twice the price for a similarly specced phone. while you pay 150 squid for a phone with dodgy warranty, miserable support, bad quality control, missing a significant feature here and there and completely breaking within a year, i enjoy a phone for twice the price with all the comforts you miss. oh, and my phone will last 2-4 years with an aftermarket battery + upgrades from cyanogenmod.

I bought a jiayu g2s for my wife about, I think, three years ago and still waiting for it to break or slow down or anything so I can buy her a new phone, but not such luck. Aside for the quiet speaker, all works like the first day, even the battery lasts the whole day.

If they're all as bad as the jiayu s3 then I predict apple will have increased sales the year after when they realise that while the budget phones look good on paper, the Chinese still have no clue when it comes to quality control, software and service unless following standards set elsewhere.
ssjinzo to smelladeal
20 Nov 15 1 #53
Good points made there but the only thing with cheap Chinese phone well 2 thing actually no upgrade path and no warranty. It will probably be stuck on the same version os it came with and you probably get one version update to the next version of Android if your lucky. Not looking at Samsung as i think they are poor for updates but even other oem such as htc or even recently LG update there phone regularly. Also talking about software some not all Chinese phone come with malware spyware and added Chinese application that are doing God knows what behind the scenes. So be wary, also no real warranty if you buy a phone from a big name they tend to have better after sales services and warranty. Whilst the Chinese phone tend not to have any and since they are made cheaper tend to have a higher failure rate due to poor qa or qc. But its all down to personal choice if you are willing to risk it you will have a bargin on your hands. But I think some people won't risk it and therefore always buy what they know apple or Samsung.
DeejayAJ to smelladeal
21 Nov 15 #59
? There's always been cheap Chinese phones at a fraction of the price? And if people were only driven by value nobody would buy iphones. Whatever way the market leans, apple and the big guys still have the deepest pockets to control the market and come out on top.
mark_398 to smelladeal
21 Nov 15 1 #64
I doubt this very much. I've had phones across the range from Huawei, ZTE, Oneplus, LG and Samsung. While you can get great hardware specs. from the less well known brands, the software quality and support isn't up to what Joe public expects and gets from the big guys like Samsung and Apple. If you're capable and willing to muck around with custom ROMs and the like then the cheaper alternatives can work well, but even then it's not guaranteed.

+1. Phone will be rooted

I have used rooted phones for many years. While I don't often bank on my phone (use HTTPS website) I just cycle my password often as a precaution. Same with PayPal. Probably use it 2 or 3 times a week so using the website rather than an app is hardly a chore.

For me while the specs for the money are great with Chinese phones its all about the twin sim. I spent years walking round with two phones in my pocket. Those days are long gone.

Banking apps and the like normally don't work on phones that have been rooted, download Root Checker of Play and see if it says it is or no. Have you done much research to see if anyone else with the same phone has the same issues? Well, maybe if it is rooted you can un-root it.

joedredd to Eadfrith
20 Nov 15 #33
I do wonder. I've tried a few purchases from various Chinese websites in deals from here and they usually don't turn up and refunds don't happen either.

I buy iPhones not for the hardware spec, but because it's a polished hardware/software package which works across all my other devices. It's well supported and any hardware issues are fixed FOC without argument (in my experience).
I sell my old devices on for high value and upgrade for a couple hundred more. Initial buy in high, but value retention is great.

One alternative is to buy these cheap clones, put up with quirky Android implementations, spending time making it work how I want and throwing it away if it goes faulty or at upgrade time. That's not for me but maybe for you.

There`s a huge amount of elitism with a "substantial percentage" of Apple sales. It`s almost undeniable. Yet, one has to hand it to Apple for the planet`s best marketing ever, period. 53 billion dollar profit is a colossal sum, it beggars belief, enough give £5 to every man, woman & child on the Earth, solely from their 2014-15 revenues. UMI forum. Also confirmed it has a SONY IMX179 which is a 8mp camera not the 13mp one they were originally advertised.

Should be pretty reasonable for the price. For most people a 720p screen is OK and will help performance and battery. Only worry is the metal housing effecting reception.
