Am I just unlucky...purchased 15 LED GU10 5w bulbs from Poundland and so far 8 have failed within 3 weeks....Have been in contact with Poundland but I did not keep the receipt...any advice please

grabbed two 5W led bulbs seem decent bulbs, CE certified
will see how long they last..

I've posted this on another thread but want as many people as possible to be warned...

I bought 2 of these Poundland LED bulbs; they failed after 3 and 4 weeks respectively. I took them back (with receipt) and the store manager said they only have a 14 day - yes 14 DAY - guarantee. Tells you everything you need to know about Poundland's faith in their own products.

I explained that LED bulbs should last years but the manager wasn't interested.

Absolute joke. False economy. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I have stocked up on poundland leds recently. Some v-tac ones but mostly Electrek ones. 2 electrek ones have failed in the last 2 days. So wishing I had not bothered now.

just bought 3 GU10s to try them

no nasty alu heat sink - all glass construction

running them now and they are nice and bright with a good light output and running pretty cool at 40c which is much cooler than the CFL GU10 they are replacing that run at 75c

off out to get some more - less than half the power consumption of the CFL GU10s and 2 year warranty - all for a quid - good old Poundie :smiley:

Got 10 gu10 today. Give out more light than halogens ! Will go back tomorrow and buy everything they have. They tend to get these in waves then none for ages.

A word of warning: I bought a couple of golfball LEDs from Poundland a few weeks back, put them in my light fitting (to replace the halogens, which were working perfectly) and when I turned them on at the wall, the house's circuit breaker went. What's more, when I put the halogens back in, I found that I couldn't turn them off at the wall - the light switch has been fused into the "on" position and the light fitting is unusable (unless I want it on 24/7, which I don't). Steer well clear.

I got one yesterday my touch lamp was working perfect till I put bulb in less then 30 mins and is has killed my lamp, not happy at all

That's what happen to the guy that build to Pizza Tower, the level was from Poundland.

Touch lamps should be banned anyway.. they are (often but not always) extremely badly made.. Usually you'll find the controller has just burned itself up if you take the bottom off the lamp (quite often this is furry cardboard you can just pull off), often melting clean through the plastic, potentially making the touch part live.

Many are highly unsafe as far as I am concerned (especially cheap ones with no name Chinese touch controllers), and yes.. they don't work very will with LED bulbs.. they seem to need the loading of a bulb to work, which I think is part of the problem.. Its likely not technically the bulb that's at fault here.

To be clear, when operating normally they are safe, but once the controller melts itself (I've seen maybe 20 cases of that), anything can happen.. depending on what melts where it could make the touch part live, or potentially start a fire.

You will probably find you (or a qualified electrician) can replace the controller and it'll work fine again by the way (but the spare controllers are as unsafe as the one fitted to most lamps).. something like: http://r.ebay.com/ZhCuAd (99p!)

I really dont know why people have such a problem with poundland bulbs, just becasue they are from poundland.

Yes the early ones (particularly the ones where they just stuffed 30 standard LEDs into a case) were rubbish, unsafe and a mess (which the ones in PoundWorld still are)..

Recently though the electrek branded ones have been excellent, I've been running 5 in my main lounge light fitting for over a year now.. no problem, no overheating, and the light is equally as bright as the 5 ses golfball, halogens that were in it before these LEDs.

I've picked up about 20 of these V-Tac ones in all 3 shapes and they are shaping up to be even better (I tried one of each and went back for more).. Great quality.. Great brightness.. Stable, no flicker..

These are every bit as good as ANY of the £5+ LEDs I have (My house now has 0 non-led bulbs) even my cupboard has one of these in now..

Does anybody know what comes after LED bulbs? Usually when an item gets to a rock bottom price, it means something new is round the corner.

that brand is actually really good, yes it's chinese but the brand Is just excellent for cheaper stuff , would scoop them all up at that price.

Very cheap.the last time they had them I got a load for a rental house. Seemed decent for the money.

I wouldn't trust LED bulbs from pound stores. Cheap LED bulbs frequently omit some safety features, or don't have constant current drivers or have inadequate heatsinking leading to premature failure, or are manufactured incorrectly etc (sometimes if you reverse one component, the outside metal can become live). I once took a risk with some cheap bulbs on eBay - one of them burned itself to a crisp and only *then* caused a trip at the fuse box. Made the room stink for ages of burned plastic.

Consider the bulbs at Asda and Aldi instead - they seem to have proper and probably legit CE+other safety markings. Asda recently reduced the price from £5 per bulb to around £4.17, from memory.

I recently had a foray into LED lighting, setting up a wedding dress shop. These E14s will project light upwards only, and are useless in form of chandelier light fitting. Most suffer from the same problem, they al have wide bases. The most cost effective viable lights were the filament cob style, they replicate old style bulbs remarkably well and are hard to tell from the originals whilst using 10% of the power. We ended up using these just because of the warranty, they are available for half the price from China:

very good price I agree, but electronics from this place just break so easily. I would personally buy from atleast screwfix or led Hut with their discount codes then you have a chance getting your money back.

Was surprised at the gu10s. Not as bright as other 5w ones, but a nicer light.
