If you're near a Morrisons today just a reminder you could save a bit more on this deal
For every £10 gift card you buy at Morrisons, they give you a Fuel Saver coupon worth 1p off every litre of fuel next time you fill up. They stock Amazon gift cards, so £200 of gift cards gets 20p off a litre of fuel (max 100 litres)

I have nfc turned off too, as well as the WiFi scanning, which I've always done. So far o wouldn't say I've noticed an improvement but not been studying too closely and been charging a bit randomly. I don't think it's worse anyway. Was losing only c.10% overnight anyway even on L

Feeling really good on my x play. Lots of the stuttering has gone. Much better phone.
For those worrying about battery life, some threads on xda suggest turning off wifi scanning in location > advanced which drains the battery.

Cheers, have done that too. Still finishing a day at 20 percent rather than 40 percent or above with no real change in usage. Think I'll plan a reset soon to see what difference it makes.

jazzuk777
1 Feb 16#260
Well, it's done now... found this glowing review of the improvements in the meantime, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so we'll see. Hopefully the reset has minimised the likelihood of glitches.
Update arrived (after I fixed the APN issues with iD Mobile...I wonder if related?). Done a reset and installing...fingers crossed.

Have you tried Motorola live chat support, they were ones to recommend the cache partition wipe on my G Gen 2 after lollipop upgrade problems and it sorted it out.

31 Jan 16#256
There are certainly posts out there reporting it (e.g. here), but hard to say how widespread. General advice seems to fall back to doing a full reset. I'll hold out on that for now.
Charged back up to 100% and left the phone on battery overnight. I did reset app preferences from the Battery -> Battery Optimisation menu. It lost 12% in 11 hours, probably in line with where it used to be, but thought this should be a bit better with Marshmallow/Doze.

Hmmmm. that's a worry. Still no notification so will keep an eye online to see whether this is widespread I think.

Yeah, I did the cache wipe. My phone died today, fair enough it was this evening. However, I've only had it run flat in a day once before due to heavy usage. Something definitely up with it for me. Based on the battery stats the biggest drain is the wifi.
jazzuk777
28 Jan 16#253
That doesn't work either. Let us know how you get in with the power issue... Could be worth wiping the cache partition, think it's a worthwhile precaution anyway maybe.

To be honest my battery life is seeming worse. Finishing the day on closer to 30%, normally been at 40%. Phone also crashed for the first time, just seemed to randomly restart.
I've decided to wipe the cache partition, never bothered before, but seems like a sensible step to take post an update. Details of how to do so are here.
Got the Marshmallow update tonight (Android 6.0). Expect quite a few have already have it, if you want to force your Moto X Play to check for it, go, Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates. About 590mb download.

jazzuk777
27 Nov 15#226
Better in some ways not in others depending on your priorities. Build and pure grunt maybe, but the X Play has more going for it, at least in what I'm looking for in a phone. Battery, camera, sd slot, plenty of update life left. It also supports 64bit which I'm not sure the 2014 does although I'm happy to be corrected...

Same question here. Nexus 5 or Play?
jazzuk777 to iancwhitmore
27 Nov 151#221
Nexus is closer to the end of of update life - Moto X Play will see M, N and possibly O.
Battery is a definite winner on the X Play and that's a key factor for me, along with the SD slot support (which you can emulate as main storage in Marshmallow when it comes!). I'd hazard a guess that camera is better although both have had moans about low light performance (I like the exposure control in the Motorola app to counter this myself and it has a better F-stop number - F2.0 vs. F2.4) and the pixel count is inarguable 21 vs 8MP. I also like having the splashproofing. Worth mentioning that the X Play will support 64bit Android. Is it worth upgrading from the 5? That very much depends on the person (and their funds) I should say...

It wasn't £250, it was £199, and I don't think Tesco has ever offered the Moto X (previous gen Moto Xs have not really come down to very low prices if you look which I have, unless you get used), only the G and E. The SU6 is a great phone by all accounts for £100, but the X Play is almost as good value at £199 in my opinion, I expect it to last me 2-3yrs quite happily (quite a lot of reviews of Moto X series have commented on their suitability for getting away from upgrade cycle). I'd be surprised if you get that long out of the SU6 - this plus its successor will cost you about the same and I'd rather have a great phone to begin with. Plus I'm not locked into Vodafone.
londonguy
24 Nov 15#183
yes the moto will get the upgrade but in a years time you will probably pick one up from tesco for sub £100 any way
su6 does me fine for the moment , no doubt a custom rom will be released for the su6 anyway. i would pay £150 for the moto x just because of the easy updates other than that its a complete rip off at £250 odd quid
jazzuk777
24 Nov 15#182
I don't suppose he is. Zte who make the su6 are regularly criticised for falling down on build quality having gotten everything or most mostly everything else right. The other issue is you can't expect to use this for the same length of time because it will almost certainly stay on lollipop. The moto series seems to be built well and this will probably get at least android N and maybe even O as well. So it's a better long term prospect if you have the money.

I have a moto g second gen which I upgraded to a z1 on the sony outlet deal and should never have bothered. Was a bit laggy on one update but generally a fantastic phone. Looking forward to this as a genuine upgrade in both generation and spec. You can forget about getting marshmallow on the smart ultra 6 let alone what comes after, this probably will get N too based on recent moto history so you will get longer use out of it.

Yeah, mine is from "Fireworks Merchant Limited" - when I've had from them in the past it's been from Currys (It's been delivered in Currys branded packaging, had Currys despatch note inside the parcel, etc, no attempt to hide the origin), so I'll be curious to see where it comes from too. As long as it's new, sealed and as per spec, then it's all good.

if you buy from Amazon but out the wrong date on your credit card. They should accept the order, but because card details are incorrect they'll be unable to process. Then they'll give you 24 hours to correct card details. During which time you sort gift voucher and apply to your account. Not sure TCB will sort vouchers in a day, but that's the only solution I can think of.

Yes, I have the phone on a pay monthly SIM only contract with Virgin. Just be aware that it takes a nano SIM so if you have a micro one in your current phone you will have to ring them up for a replacement. They will send it out in 2-3 days for free or £2.99 for next day delivery.

jazzuk777
23 Nov 15#127
Most manufacturers add various "tweaks" and software/bloatware to Android as compared to you'd find it on a 'pure' Nexus device. This tends to mean that they don't perform as well as they should - for example my wife's old Samsung S3 was unusable by last KitKat update, even though similar spec to a Moto G. Motorola phones add very little extra (and as a not completely indirect consequence, tend to be near the front of the queue for updates, should get Marshmallow quite early). LG aren't too bad as it goes for this extra weight, but I'd go Nexus if I could afford it and this is a great second best IMHO.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by more of a pure Android experience? I've been OS all my life. Edging towards the G3 at the moment.

23 Nov 15#125
Hardware is only part of the puzzle - from what I've heard you can improve the mediocre performance of the Xperia Z series camera by changing the camera app. Anyway, the crucial point is that (all of the series up to Z5) Z series give underwhelming results with the camera for a flagship. LG G series by comparison have had better reviews for their cameras and my wife's G2 seems to do pretty well, though I can't remember who made the camera module. As I said in an earlier post, my Moto G(2) was at least the equal of the Z1 I "upgraded" to from the Sony Outlet deal earlier this year. Looking forward to my X Play arriving
jazzuk777
23 Nov 15#123
I think the camera is probably better on the G3, but from what I've heard the XP wins hands down on battery. I'm not really bothered by a super HD screen and it just hampers battery life (noone is going to grumble about 1080p - even the 720p on the Moto G is very usable). I'm all for a pure Android experience too.
jazzuk777
23 Nov 15#122
Almost certainly longer term support for updates. Expect battery is better too though not looked at spec for the SU6. Also seen some reports of issues with SU6 - can't remember what - overheating? Having had two Moto Gs, I'd bet on this I have to say (and have- just ordered!)
TommehLi
23 Nov 15#121
I was very tempted to get this once the price dropped like it has (upgrading from original Moto G), but opted for the OnePlus X instead and I am loving it - mainly for the 5" screen rather than 5.5" on this one. Battery and main camera look better on paper, plus waterproofing but the OPX looks much better :stuck_out_tongue:

lg add lots of tweaks to android. some are good some are not so much. you'll find they take more memory because of this.
recently ive had this, the nexus 5 and the g2. the play feels more like a nexus device as there is less apps and tweaks you may not want.
if you are coming from an iphone it'll be a big change regardless.

You can't compare this phone to the LG G4. You can compare it to the model up the Moto X Style which has similar spec's (same chip set, memory, screen resolution, battery).

23 Nov 15#86
Logically you should be looking probably at a Nexus device - no bloatware can only help. Honestly I'd be surprised if this lags much, especially once up to date. The Moto Gs punch well above their CPU/RAM weight thanks to lean skinning and I'd expect this to be similar. I did see a 5/5 review on the Moto X Force earlier today if you have more like £500 to spend.

LG G3 stomps on it performance-wise. Think the camera is the only thing. G3 is listed on GSM for marshmallow update too.
One thing to note is LG G3 has higher res, so while more powerful, if usability is the goal, I'd like to see them side by side. You always give up performance for higher res.

I've got a Z1 Compact as well, its camera is fine....unless you're in partial light, a dark room etc.. the flash tears the shot to pieces, or without flash the sensor grains it to hell.
Shame as I've been extremely happy with every other aspect of the phone, but the camera in anything other than good light is dreadful. i'm sure you could do some tricks if you spend a while fiddling with ISo and so on, but I've never got it to work. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/sony-xperia-z1-compact-1206859/review/6

I agree about not relying on reviewers but at the same time I'd agree with them in my experience with the Z1. Certainly I think the pics should be a good measure above the second gen Moto G anyway and they just aren't. Now I am having a bad dilemma, I have bought one for my sister of ebay, new for 173£ but that was that 50£ off code and seller making a mess so basically luck.
Now wondering whether to pick one up for myself to replace moto x 2014 which was always a bit weak on the battery front.
This is 190£ for me with student discount and I believe I can get about 150£ for moto x 2014. (after paying for fees and delivery on ebay).
Benefits:
Much better battery life
SD card slot
better camera
Can use a tempered glass protector rather than plastic ones
Cons:
X 2014 has better (AMOLEDrather than lcd) screen
X 2014 is smaller and lighter and metal rims

I moved from a Moto X 2014 to the Moto X Play.
Things I prefer with the Moto X Play.
- Battery is much bigger and will easily last the day, whereas the Moto X 2014 wouldn't.
- SD Card support, this was a huge benefit compared to my 16GB Moto X 2014 without SD Card support.
Things I prefer with the Moto X 2014
- The Amoled screen was much better and made the active screen a great feature. The Moto X Play's black screen lights up the room at night.
- I miss the infrared sensors on the front for hand gestures. When I bed I used to wave my hands about and the phone would show me any notifications I had. The Moto X doesn't have these sensors and releys on movement of the phone.
- Gyroscope, I used Google cardboard quite a bit with this phone, the Moto X Play doesn't have a Gyroscope and can't be used with VR.
- Metal build qauilty and leather back.
Overall I would prefer to go back to the Moto X 2014, but the smaller battery and lack of SD card will prevent me.

I don't think that generally holds up from the reviews I've seen and my experience - they frequently are below par - the camera on the Z1 for example was 21MP heralded by Sony as superb, but is worse than the second gen Moto G (8MP) (I've had both) even after multiple updates/'improvements' by Sony as often smudgy and widely criticised by users. I don't think the camera on the next couple are much better as they use the same hardware until I think the Z5?

Great battery. Android m incoming. Decent camera. SD card slot (more important in marshmallow).
Performance isn't great. It's been recognised many manufacturers haven't done a great job with the sd615. Some animations are stuttery.

I've had 4 phones with the SD615 (Sony Xperia M4, Smart Ultra 6, Blade S6, Moto X Play) and have found it to be a thoroughly underwhelming SOC that only seems to do well in benchmarks.
To be fair to Moto, they have managed to do a far better job with it than Sony or ZTE. I found the X Play to only have the occasional judder and slow moment, whereas the Xperia M4 was a laggy nightmare in comparison (easily one of the worst experiences I have had with a phone). The performance with the ZTE's was better than the Sony, but I found that the SU6 launched apps far slower than the Moto G 3 (SD410) that I was using at the same time.
It's a good price for what the X Play offers, it's just a shame about the SD615. I'm not sure I'd be happy spending £200 on it.
If you like the original Moto X for it's best qualities (fast OS, excellent RGB AMOLED screen, small and light (easy to hold)). You might be disappointed with the Moto X Play. In use, it feels slower despite scoring well in benchmarks, and it's big, chunky, and heavy. However, it does have a great battery.

I've found Flubit to have good customer service, but I know there are a lot of people who have different views. After placing an order for an item once (I forget what) they called me pretty much within 5 minutes to warn me the shipping would take longer than expected and allowed me to cancel and get a refund straight away. In another instance I purchased a Philips shaver from them that died after a year, I contacted them and they just refunded me the full amount I'd paid over a year ago ~£50. This phone might end up coming from Amazon through the Flubit order anyway, just don't know. On a DoTD it's always risky if you really need the item.

Charged back up to 100% and left the phone on battery overnight. I did reset app preferences from the Battery -> Battery Optimisation menu. It lost 12% in 11 hours, probably in line with where it used to be, but thought this should be a bit better with Marshmallow/Doze.

Update: Hmmm there *were* anyway - there was a Handtec deal which has been deleted rather than expired for some reason...no idea why. Tesco looks OOS too. Clove for just P&P extra (minus cashback from from TCB or Quidco maybe if they do it?)

No worries was meant to be
Stick or twist?
Thx for the info though.

Can you let us all know if it's worth it? I'm not 100% sure the charging times I'm seeing quoted seems all that quicker than normal ,but I do have a Z1 with 2xxx MaH so that may be why. Be interested to know how much quicker it actually works for real before I spend £10+ on yet another charger!!!
su6 does me fine for the moment , no doubt a custom rom will be released for the su6 anyway. i would pay £150 for the moto x just because of the easy updates other than that its a complete rip off at £250 odd quid
i find the ultra 6 solid as a rock , x play is not worth extra £100 in my eyes
than why the hell would you upgrade some hi-end phone to another for no reason?
Good deal though, for those with no patience lol
The only benefit this phone has over a smart ultra 6 is a 21mp vs 13mp camera
Tee hee. Thanks again xx
Will this work
Please

This is an excellent phone for this price. I paid £270 about 2 months ago. The battery life is fantastic.
Storage is only 16GB so it would make sense to get a 16 or 32 GB SD card for it.

Great deal
Heat added.
its for my partner and she used it over the weekend and it had 5hrs 10mins of SOT and still had 30% left, and that included an hour of calls and wifi on all weekend.
for the price, this is nuts, lovely screen, great battery, SD card, not had any performance issues. my only issue is no LED notification in the stock software, but it has the nudge to show notifications.

recently ive had this, the nexus 5 and the g2. the play feels more like a nexus device as there is less apps and tweaks you may not want.
if you are coming from an iphone it'll be a big change regardless.
Here's a comparison.

What do you mean by 'debloat'?
the play wins for debloat (which you could do via custom rom on the g3)
the only other thing is battery life. lesser screen and larger battery capacity. so its how important you find this point
One thing to note is LG G3 has higher res, so while more powerful, if usability is the goal, I'd like to see them side by side. You always give up performance for higher res.

Do your research though!
Brilliant, thanks been looking for a way of doing this ever since noticing a blanking plate on the second sim tray.
Shame as I've been extremely happy with every other aspect of the phone, but the camera in anything other than good light is dreadful. i'm sure you could do some tricks if you spend a while fiddling with ISo and so on, but I've never got it to work.

shows the problem well.
So does;

I'm very interested to see how the Z5 Compact camera shapes up, apparently it handles this better, though still does some weird things.

EDIT: If you click the photo and zoom in I think I'm the tall object reflected in the snakes eye, that was just a manual shot although in fairly good light.
Same goes for most phones with expandable storage.
Decisions, decisions
My old z2 eats this phone in performance benchmarks and thats aging.
Would not buy, just because of that crappy GPU.

Solid build quality (if slightly heavy) , excellent battery life (never had it go below 40% at the end of a day, no matter how heavy my usage has been), minimal bloatware and enough grunt to handle everything I throw at it without it struggling, not that I've been playing terribly demanding games on it.
For every £10 gift card you buy at Morrisons, they give you a Fuel Saver coupon worth 1p off every litre of fuel next time you fill up. They stock Amazon gift cards, so £200 of gift cards gets 20p off a litre of fuel (max 100 litres)

Great battery. Android m incoming. Decent camera. SD card slot (more important in marshmallow).
Performance isn't great. It's been recognised many manufacturers haven't done a great job with the sd615. Some animations are stuttery.
Performance wise it copes, just not perfect, especially comparing to something like a g3/n5.
For 200 it's a newly released mid range phone.
However, it does have a great battery.
edit. I've just read a review on trust pilot that said Flubit will cancel orders if amazon raise the price, and as this offer is only good for 1 day, it's not worth the risk. I'll keep my Amazon order and get it Tuesday with prime.
This phones camera is pretty good for everything except low light when it is ok.
Good price OP.
ta.
I paid about £130 upfront on a simple £10 a month contract (500mins, 5000 texts, 1gb data). I wanted something cheap as chips as I try to communicate with people as little as possible and it suits me fine!
