It runs android though, it will be like a McLaren P1 car towing a horsebox. The 950XL is like a Lotus Exige - doesn't need a v8 to be quick. Try running android L or M on a dual core 1gb ram phone - its crap, yet an unoptimised win 10 preview works smoother on even a 512mb equipped lumia 520.
The 950 XL looks lovely (for an extra £50 you might as well get the best).

Anyone posting performance comparisons is simply an idiot. The phone is not yet released and there have been no proper tests. You can compare specs but to judge a device on this alone makes you the sort of person who likes willy waving contests.
There are a few nice features which could attract people, particularly business. Personally, I would not buy one until there have been some big name reviews.

same cpu and ram as moto x style which is £360, this will probably have a better camera though, but with top end windows phones being few and far between and not that popular microsoft have missed a chance here, if this was around the £350 mark I think it would stand a chance of selling well but not at this price.

This is currently the best snapdragon available, 820 is still a while away. In terms of other specs, the 950xl has a big battery size, removable battery and micro SD(up to 2gb) and not forgetting continium. Windows phone is also brilliantly optimized , like iOS and doesn't suffer from lag/random startups (patented android/Samsung). The camera from the limited samples also looks good, and will probably wipe Sony all over the floor ( heck probably a Samsung s3 camera is even better than a Z5s). Can't see how this will get Microsoft back in the game, but this will be a good phone. My next one, once the price drops
Your camera comparison is awful. First of all, all manufactuerers use sony image sensors (apart from nokia). The cameras in the g4, s6, iphone 6s are all sony. Samsung release the s5 with their own isocell and soon after went back to using sony sensors. The Z5 is a generation in front of any other android smartphone with regards to the camera tech. S6, G4 etc are all using imx 240 sony sensors, sony uses imx 300 in the z5 and its the best rated camera: http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles
Specs mean nothing its a windows phone so doesn't need high end specs like Android. This phone will be smoother than any Android phone as the OS is like IOS, made by them and optimized.
All that keeps me away from these phones is the terrible app store.

The 950 XL is SD 810. Carl zeiss lens are very good. I think after release we will find out if its on par or better than the sony lens.
Uh oh looks like I just got served. Obviously I meant the 950xl. Just mentioned it later in my post and that DOES have a 810.
Also yeah, Sony produce the sensors, and the S6 etc produce great photos......
However the problem is that Sony's own software optimization of its own sensors is dogpoop, the pictures are terrible. Yeah if you want to argue that yeah it has the most megapixels etc whatever but that doesn't stand for anything. Sony also promises updates for its camera software but the only thing it focuses on is producing software which allow you to take clown faces. I have a z2 which is only one and a half years old but made me sure that I'd never get a Sony again. If you look at the reviews for the Z5 then the camera is not a strong point.
Ah yes the DXOmark reviews, if you want to put any phone camera ahead of the Nokia 808 or 1020 then you really need to be reinformed. It just seems like they put any new flagship at the top. Look at sample comparisons for yourself between the different camera phones. Speaking of Nokia cameras, they have a really bad rep don't they. Yeah, Microsoft lumia 950xl is going to wipe the floor with z5 like I said earlier.

I was referring to this deal.. so you agree a sub par gpu and 2k is a poor idea?
Terrible in what sense? The photos look great. I agree that sony messed up the software in early releases as they focuses too much on shutter speed and washing out details. since you own a z2, you may notice that superior auto frequently resorts to sports mode, reducing shutter speed-reducing details. They have since moved away from that and the z2 produces decent pictures. The lower aperture in sony phones means that they let in too much light in bright scenes and tend to be more specific when focusing. On the flip side, they are far superior at night shots and can achieve a semi dslr-like photos. people are subjective, obvious different reviews will say different things but dsomark is a good place to start since they actually have experience in photography.
You suggested that the z5 was up to the level of s3 which is total nonsense. As I said, the camera is one generation ahead of the crowd. The tech is there and it will get even better through firmware.
The nokia 808 has even worse auto software than sony and cannot set the white balance to save its life but in manual mode its unmatched. Its a better camera tho and thats obvious. I did not say otherwise. Is it really a smartphone tho or a camera with the phone? Considering its size, practicality and slow processing for those huge files. Hence why nokia has reduced the MP, reduced the sensor size in attempt to make the phone more "phone". This will have a worse camera than the pureview.
As for this vs z5, its anyones guess but the z5 has been proven to be a very good camera.

I will personally wait for the phone to be released... You will see a lot more better deals than jumping on it at pre-order price. Black Friday/Cyber Monday is around the corner, but if that's too early the Xmas/January sales are just a month later. Waiting one or two months could potentially save you £50-£100 I reckon, and if not, you will almost certainly get a bundle deal for that price when it's actually released. Every Lumia flagship so far has had some kinda offer (Fitbit, wireless bundle, etc).

No, it might be OK. We don't know how the snapdragon 808 will handle it on a windows platform, but using examples of past windows phones - they have been very well optimized and smooth. Android on the other hand - I agree with you would struggle on the 808.
Yeah it was a bit of a troll comment re s3, but you could also say that its unfair to compare this phone to the z5. This has been one and a half years in the making. Z5 will recieve a new successor in about 4 months - so really the z5 is actually overpriced. Sony keep on making small incremental updates to their phone but have they really sorted out their camera issue if months down the line they have to release updates. This new phone does actually utilize pureview tech so it should be of a high standard. And the 808 doesn't have slow processing times, the shot to shot time is quite good actually... And taking opinion from dsomark is like listening to Jeremy Hunt about the NHS I feel....
I've been quite disappointed with Sony - they made some excellent phones in the past cybershot 810i being my favourite phone of all time. But now they churn out junk - and they sales numbers don't lie - they're not even top 5 in sales. Do you own the z5 yourself?
smellyonion
11 Nov 15#36
Sure it will be OK for the interface. The g4 is testament to that and thats on android. But throw some demanding games down its throat and it will struggle. A snapdragon 810 at 1080p will play games twice the framerate of snapdragon 808 at 2k, this will be difference between playable and non playable a few years down the line. which is sad for a top of the range phone at this price point.
Sony do have a habit of updating their phones every few months. But they have almost perfected it with design and features and the camera has been overhauled the first time since the z1. It is a totally different beast. The lack of usb type c puts me off the z5.
I have the same phone as you and really enjoy the camera. I've put it up against an i phone 5s, n5, g3 and it compares very favourably, especially in low light. I do think that they make the android cameras.

Yeah fair point tbh. I guess we'll see. Lg went with a 808 because of the overheating issues but I think its as bad at overheating. Is it a z2 you have then or a 808, cause I got myself one for the camera. Its only around 129 USD in the states. I really did like my z2 , but the battery was getting worse and worse and it randomly conked out for no reason. I got it fixed but got an Innis d6000 in the interm. Its given me the lesson not to buy Chinese phones ever again. Again, its got a pretty good Sony sensor but takes terrible photos, very unsteady and the advertised 6000ma battery isn't all that. Best to stick to the big retailers

I can only assume that the Windows knockers have never used a Windows Phone. I got the 640 out of curiosity (and because it came with a year's worth of Office for 109 bones) and absolutely love the OS, so much so that I'm planning to jump ship permanently when the 950 comes out.
The app gap is occasionally frustrating, but as I'm not a 15 year old in need of my fix of Snapchat etc. I think I can cope with the smoother, cleaner, more efficient OS as a trade-off. I'll wait for the reviews, but if the 950 delivers on the promise of its specs it's going to be a corker.

Exactly, they went for the 808 because of the over heating. But the 808 has to work harder and it too over heats. In the end causing more throttleling than the 810. Its a horrible choice. Gpu tech isn't there for these silly resolutions. In the LG throttles more than smart phones using the 810....... When the heat pipes are well designed, the over heating is not an issue.
I have a z2 and think the camera is great. I got it soon after release and am the first to admit the software was shoddy. It used to always pick sport mode. Now. The camera has drastically improved. I used it to take pictures of fireworks in pitch black and it made it look like there was a second sun. Also, if the Xperia overheat - dump them in water
