Is that what you tell your children on Christmas morning?

"Guess what son, I know you wanted that toy lightsabre so guess what I got you? A bear trap, you little conformist turd."

Good effort, OP, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be told what toys to buy based on an arbitrary list made by retailers. Load of rubbish, this annual charade is.

Sad isn't it. Although, to be fair, it's the kids who are influenced and write these toys on their list leaving the parents with little choice.

My kids don't want anything on the list - just half of the Smyths Toys catalogue!

The IDO3D pens are appalling, you'll end up with eight pens the same colour and spend six months waiting for the stuff to dry before throwing the whole lot in the bin. Your kids will have a better time skimming forty pound coins into the sea.

Kids may be horrible but I'm sorry to say I was no better. My Dad was a hardworking soldier and train enthusiast who spent most of 1965 saving up to buy me a big model railway set for Christmas.
Come the morning itself I was thrilled. There was a massive box fulled of track, trucks, coaches and engines. I carefully unpacked everything and sorted the contents into the appropriate category.
And then I played all day.....in the box.

As the owner of a small, local independent toy shop, I just wanted to quickly ask people to please consider at least trying your local specialists before ordering this years must have toys from the big box shifters.

We depend on this time of the year for a large amount of our business, and without it we wouldn't be able to stay in business.

We carry over half of this list of top toys in stock, and our pricing is competitive too. I'm not saying to buy from me, as that would be just as unfair to your local shops, I'm just saying to consider whether your local independents can help before ploughing more money into the big corporations.

Remember, when you shop local you're not buying a new 3rd home for a fat cat chief executive, you've helping a local person to send their little girl to dance lessons, keep a roof over their families heads or even just to put food on the table.

Your comment, number of likes and this thread appearing in the first week of November only proves further that the toy industry is winning and that parents are continually feeling a little powerless in this regard. All adults should think about the response from most parents to their child in a 'he told me to do it' scenario; why should the response to Christmas marketing be any different.

By the logic you mention; if a child really wanted a Bear Trap we should wrestle one off a bears leg to fulfil the order if we have to. Not buying a child a 'conformist gift' is not disrespectful to the child, it isn't encroaching on their human rights or causing irreparable damage nor is it in any way an indication that the child is loved less which is equal to the fact that buying a child what they ask for / demand / marketing tells us to; doesn't mean the child is loved more.

The fact you responded and the number of likes also indicates that many are resigned to being, so called, sheep, but appear to have an internally fuelled aggression, believing that it is out of your control. It isn't.

The best gift a parent can give is their time, which is something a child might rarely specifically ask for, to interact with their child albeit with a toy of some description whether it is in the top ten or not. This is obviously true as much of the time as possible but I think has added importance on xmas day.

One of the things that puzzles me is how many people are stuck in a loop (this applies to all adults buying gifts for any children), if you are a parent that has more than one child or even if you have one child who is say for example 6 years old. You will know about what they have been given in the past / last Christmas and if it was really worth it; many even begrudge buying a toy that they know is a waste of money but still buy it anyway.

It can be harder for people outside of the inner family circle to judge what to buy and these gifts are sometimes even worse and even more subject to what the industry tells us is popular. Too often a gift is purchased to appease the buyer rather than the intended recipient. The industry is engineered this way to make it easy.

When we wake up from buying for the sake of buying, it's then we will really feel sheepish.

Call me a sheep if they want it they get it end of lol

When all their mates have got the particular toy they wanted but my lad has'nt because i didnt want to conform.....

It is once a year, i work 12 -16 hours a day running my own business 7 days a week and hardly see my kids so if they want a particular toy for chrimbo they are getting it and I will be happy to sit christmas morning and help my kids unwrap their toys happy days

Heard on the grapevine (from an Argos manager) that 3 for 2 is back at Argos tomorrow until Tuesday so might be worth reserving today (at today's prices) - if prices go up tonight which they most likely will if something you want is on sale you should be able to ask for the reserved price then get 3 for 2.

Wow, they seem to have got the list hugely wrong this year. Last year my kids wanted everything on the list. This year the only thing that's on that list is the pens. I've already told them they're rubbish and don't work, as all the reviews show, so that leaves a worthless list IMO.

So glad my 2 kids aren't easily influenced by advertising.... would cost me a fortune!!!
I won't even get myself a Lego set that costs over £40, so there's no sodding way they're getting something more than that.
Any one who spends £90 odd on something like the Lego Millennium Falcon for a kid is an idiot.

From personal experience, kids play with new toys for about 6 weeks, before they get shoved in the cupboard never to be seen again! Every October/November we do a cupboard clear-out in preparation for Xmas, and I've lost count of the number of times I've heard "Oh I forgot I got that for Xmas last year".
KongDonkey to WalkerboyUK
5 Nov 15 3 #94
I wouldn't count LEGO in that category. It can give many years of pleasure and if looked after can be passed down to future generations in the same condition it was when it was bought.

Can't say the same for the RoboFish though !

They WILL be, because they're being shoved down our throats by clever advertisers.
If the advertising wasn't so heavily biased by certain channels etc. then you'd find half these top 10 items wouldn't be anywhere near the top 10.

When I saw this list I thought wow they've chosen most of the toys that no one wants and made it a top list, now people are going to buy it and never be played with. I see I'm not the only one thinking like that.

But OP props for the effort. If someone is going to buy anything from the list then best thing to save as much as they can.

Well my 3 boys have not asked for anything off this list, Who puts these lists together?
toysdude to NGC danger
5 Nov 15 #111
The list is put together by the BTHA using a panel of both independent and multiple retailers who vote for toys based on their experience, opinion and customer feedback - i have 20+ years in the trade and they don't often get it that wrong. That said the industry is wonderfully diverse and you can find some truly inspirational toys from small companies that will never make this list in your local independent toyshop. the message - this is a great guide but is not an exhaustive list of what kids want for Christmas..

No consoles, no console games not a list worth considering. My 9 yr old probably has never even heard of most of these things. I reckon its what the toy companies have over ordered through out the year and they want to get them sold so make this fake list to fool those that have no idea what to buy kids. Glad to see the STUPID prices they think some people will pay them for some cheap plastic imported from China - shocking I say.

Not sure if you can conform to the behaviour of one individual, mate. I'm not having a go at the parents buying these toys, but having a list of the top toys is such a load of rubbish.

BUT it's not as rubbish as the John Lewis Christmas advert.

If you need to rely on a list to suggest what YOUR children want for Christmas, you're doing something very wrong!

7 Nov 15 #129
Your so right, my 3 children 9,7,5 hve over the years got bored with their Disney Princesses, My Little Pony, Frozen dolls, Furby's etc in much less than 6 weeks. Not long after Christmas we always end up going to the local charity shop to give most away . Advertisers on childrens television channel's are forever trying to make things more appealing to kids in order to pressure their parents to buy at this time of the year.

My kid doesn't want any of that and he watches Pop which has loads of toy adverts on it, only advertised thing he wants is the hot wheels volcano thing, but that is massive his father is still thinking about it due to the floor space it takes up, other than that he just want a siku world and animal crossing (both of which he is getting and I have never seen a TV advert for Siku stuff).

Somehow I dont think its kids who are after the star wars stuff, more likely parents using their kids as an excuse.
WalkerboyUK to Error440
9 Nov 15 #159
The hotwheels volcano set probably isn't as big as it looks on TV. According to the specifications it's only 24" x 15" which is tiny. We have always found that HotWheels has some good advertising to make their toys look a lot bigger than the really are.
Error440
7 Nov 15 #134
My son is 5, he likes cars, he's always liked cars started wanting hot wheels when he was about 1 year old, had disney cars and elc ones before that. Now he plays with hot wheels cars, siku cars, corgi cars (notice a theme here), he has had 3 petrol stations/garages since being born which he has either broken or grown out of.

I tried buying transformers to get him interested in action figures, didn't work, so for Christmas its more cars, he has a 3ds and a old tablet he plays car games on, he likes car tv shows (oh how sick I am of repeats of top gear) he makes a beeline for the car mags in wh smith. I buy lego sets and all he builds is cars although he does also build things for his car city like lego petrol station, car paint shop, bridge etc.

wish mine would show interest in something else even if it was just for a few months, I have tried to encourage an interest in dinosaurs recently, thats failed too.

The days of humanity may be at an end very soon, could someone please think about this thread properly, its really sad how people follow trends and are told what to buy for their child/ themselves. Your child should receive what you feel is best for them, what you're capable of buying. Don't let machines and corporations decide your child's next toy, be brave and ignore marketing plots like this - you've been fooled!

I still think its big we haven't got that much space his toys go on the living room floor infront of the door, I know the siku world is big but you can walk on that its just tiles with road markings on so that wont bother me like a big flimsy ramp thing, he has the super speed blastway I think thats big and he's nearly killed it anyway the crappy little blue clips for the track are all distressed plastic.

Tracy island really? Just get the kids to make it themselves Blue peter style.

Seriously though, I would have thought Minecraft Story Mode game would be on that list, pretty much every child I have spoken to wants that game for christmas. My 6 year old has requested minecraft and the Fur real starlily unicorn, I thought that latter might also be on the list considering the distance I had to travel this week to pick one up as it was out of stock everywhere.

She got the shopkins ice cream truck for her birthday and loves it and she got one of the frozen skating dolls for christmas last year but has only played with it twice (it's a bit rubbish to be honest)

read amazon reviews before buying any of these toys - seriously. Some are money well spent, some are awful. The list doesn't seem to be written by anyone who's actually tried them.

Tesco are selling that at £40 I think that's right. Me and my Neice seen it looks a good deal for what it is.

Could you not buy it as family fun and not any one in particular's. On Christmas morning tell them there is a special gift which is addressed to everyone in the family and not just the kids. Better than saying its for all the kids as they usually don't like sharing, I have learnt that from doing.
