Most of the comments in this thread are the exact reason I was loathe to post this deal...AV threads are like hard drive threads. Always some who like the software and some who hate it.

I've worked in enterprise IT for 20+ years and personally I've never purchased a paid AV subscription. in both home and work I've probably tried most of the options and supported some on deployments of 10's of thousands of machines.
My machines at home (I have many) stay clean by keeping them up to date, browsing wisely and running some basic free AV software but I know there are many people who like to just buy the latest version of McAfee/Norton etc.

These are the people I hope will benefit from this thread.

Great price OP! Good for people that like using McAfee. Personally not for me for the same reason below. lol

I hate it with a passion too.

I had to remove it from a lot of laptops at work and it was awful. The CPU was way too high due to McAfee which was why I had to remove it. Could see in Task Manager that it was using up way too much. It's not easy to remove as there are files (or maybe just one file. :S) that are hidden in your computer and there was just no way of being able to find those hidden files. Tried downloading some software to remove them but it didn't work out.

Did you try the Mcafee removal tool after you uninstalled it (I always run the manufacturer's removal tool in safe mode to try to clear any residue left by the uninstall when switching AV)? :- https://service.mcafee.com/webcenter/portal/cp/home/articleview?locale=en-GB&articleId=TS101331

All AV will have some effect on performance, but Norton didn't seem too bad to me when I last used a PC with it installed, and is supposed to be one of the most effective, although one of the things I was doing was uninstalling it as the licence was nearly up, and putting Kaspersky on as the business could get it for free for their PCs thanks to having a Barclay account.

Kaspersky Internet security seemed worse to me, and more annoying.

Nod32 had a good reputation for its low impact on performance, but not tried it myself.

Uh? Think you've misunderstood what I was saying - let's try again if you have broadband like most do?! Your ISP provides Internet security for free ( included in there service to you ) - I wasn't promoting any deal or provider, just saying the chances are your ISP already offers it for nothing if you want it!

Nod32 has been the best anti-virus I've ever used in terms of impact on system resources, I would recommend it for that. Not sure about percentage of threats it catches but I'm fairly sure it's quite high in the rankings.

look at Nod32. I've also not had too much of an impact with Avast and Avira. Keep away from McAfee and Norton. At any price. They will grind your machine to a halt and getting rid of them is a pita.
wpj
22 Nov 15 1 #34
Because I used to use it before Avast...... That's why it says "since"!

My wife's company insists on McAfee (global big boy) and she screams her hair out when it does a scan (scheduled by the company in the US) as she can't do a thing.

McAfee have gone from being the so called best in the world to them practically giving it away free with any service/ISP/credit card/etc. Now it's even cheap to buy because not many people want to...

Kaspersky is my overall favourite. NOD32 has a high detection rate but it's interface sucks for most people - it's geared towards IT pros. Avira is good for a FREE solution. Norton has a bad reputation because of a run of 4-5 system hogging editions over 10 years ago... It really isn't that bad anymore and it's detection rate is higher than average while it's interface is very n00b-friendly. Of the most easily commercially available products (ones you can go into any electronic shop and buy), I would put Norton 2nd to only Kaspersky, but overall it's obviously nowhere near top2

Avg support has been useless. will drop AVG at first possible opportunity

I've used several different Anti virus over the last 12 months, I can honestly say McAfee is by far the worst piece of software I have ever used, this included it adding thousands of shortcuts to it's website in my Chrome favorites list, don't ask me how but it took a while to get rid of them, never again.

Fair comment, and it is a good deal price wise, which is mostly what this site is all about. Of course it is a subjective subject, like most things, and i went through "purgatory" for posting a NOD32 offer on here once.

22 Nov 15 #48
In my own tests, it offers little or no protection at all, but does a good job making you 'think' everything is ok. Don't waste your money - eset nod32/avira and/or malwarebytes.
wondermouse
22 Nov 15 #49
Avast Free does a better job of protection than McAfee.

From bitter experience this lets viruses walk right through with no notifications. Avast and Norton both immediately picked up the culprits, Avoid. Even at this price. Cold, bitterly cold.
LightningPete
22 Nov 15 #52
Avira Anti Virus has the smallest footprint on both RAM and Cpu usage. So small, that microsoft word uses more. Norton and McAfee are just too intensive on your system to reap the benefits of having a protected system. You lot must be living with very slow computers to have bulky AVs running.
LightningPete
22 Nov 15 #53
For a paid subscription of AV this is cheap. Previous history with many PCs with Norton or McAfee means that id rather shop elsewhere. Id recommend you look at - Beginners and Advanced Users: Avira [Free] (German Engineering) and Expert Users: Nod32.
The Benefits of Avira, is it has Android and PC deployments for free, free privacy advisor for your phone and free optimiser for your phone. It also has free theft capabilities for laptops and phones, with Scream / Kill and Wipe Functions.

For anyone interested it actual independent testing of the latest AV programs you can find them here: http://dennistechnologylabs.com/reports/s/a-m/2015/

Dennis Technology labs are well respected and based in the UK. Their latest reports shows Kaspersky and Norton your best bet right now.
On a personal note, as a computer repair tech I can personally vouch that McAfee and AVG are the most common AVs I find installed on computers that are riddled with viruses and PUPs. Hardly scientific, but worth noting.
Uridium
22 Nov 15 #60
Exactly the reason I posted the deal....as I said personally I'd never pay for an AV subscription but Norton, Kaspersky and McAfee are all very popular especially amongst less technical users.

Does amuse me how MS SCEP fails everyones tests yet it's an icredibly popular choice for enterprise AV right now. It's free as part of a Micorosoft enterprise license agreement so it just goes to show that cost is as much as a factor as protection to many companies still
