To put this deal into perspective, waitrose sell a similar 40 year old tawny port for £100. I find this aldi price simply incredible to be honest. Get a bottle while you can....

Sorely tempted to get that 40yr old Tawny though....but I already have a 20yr old Sandeman Tawny I got from Amazon for £10 that I'm planning to crack into over Christmas as well!

As a heads up, Amazon are putting the 20yr old Sandeman Tawny on a lightning deal tomorrow morning at 8am. as they are currently selling it for £29.99 anyway, my hope is it would be around the £25 mark.

I picked up two bottles of this last week... one for Christmas and one for immediate consumption :smile:

It's a cracking deal in terms of price, but I had a couple of glasses on the weekend and was a little underwhelmed. Almost certainly my unsophisticated palette, but I'd probably prefer to go for a couple of £15 bottles than one of these.

You're underwhelmed because, as with most stuff in life, you get what you pay for. I've yet to find anything there that isn't an inferior version of its more expensive brand counterpart. Even if the difference is almost not noticeable, it is never literally unnoticeable. I think they do a great job at making decent quality stuff at very affordable prices but you're just never going to get quite as good as high quality top brands, understandably so. Seems a great price for what it is though.

I'm a red wine drinker and would like to know if I'd like port? I've never tasted the stuff before ,but just tonight I was tempted to buy a bottle in asda for Xmas .Taylor's vintage port ,any suggestions would be welcomed.

Asda sell vintage port now? I've only seen the lbv or the stuff that is bottled in undeclared years in supermarkets.

I absolutely agree that, in most cases, you get what you pay for.

I wouldn't usually spend £30 on a bottle of port, because I'm very happy with the stuff that's around the £15 mark. I was curious as to what a £30 bottle would be like, even one that's evidently much cheaper than other similarly aged ports (and therefore perhaps not as 'good'). It's not that I didn't enjoy the Maynards, I just didn't enjoy it any more than the cheaper Dow/Grahams I'd usually drink, which is a little disappointing. I'd be interested in a recommendation for an alternative, either tawny or ruby?

It's much the same as champagne. I enjoy a bottle of Veuve, but am perfectly happy drinking a sparkling pinot noir for a fraction of the price. I've never had Dom Perignon or Krug, but each time I'm in Waitrose and they have a 25% off 6 bottles offer, I'm tempted to try one. I don't, because a) it's a lot of money for a bottle of wine that will be gone in an hour and b) I'm fairly sure I wouldn't enjoy it any more than than the Veuve or the Pinot.

That said, I'm more than happy to spend plenty on a nice single malt, but then that lasts me a lot longer, if I'm being good :smiley:

Looking for a decent Port for the father in law, and came across this in the Aldi store, St Neots, checked it on here, and bought 2 for a great price. There must have been 50 on the shelf, so if anyone's looking for one, there still in stock here.

Well, there are a couple of lukewarm comments here, but I think it's a great port - I've drunk quite a fair amount during 20 years in the RAF and so am quite familiar with the 'cheaper but OK' ports. I was bought the '4-in-1' Maynards at £25? as a present, drank the 10,20,and 20yrs old, but the 40yr old was a peach. I just went to Aldis and bought a couple of the 40's for myself, just a couple left on the shelf and I was tempted to clear them too, but felt a little selfish. Really looking forward to them.
