No one device is better than another over all things, you pay your money and makes your choice. Maybe they are infinitely better for you, but rest assured each and every tablet has both plus and minus points.

Apple.
Safe, Noddy OS, which is expensive, dumbed down, and you have a device that only does what the overlord allows. Paired with one of the biggest crapstores, full of cute puppy soundboards, fake instruments and brain training apps. Want a device to make you think others will look at you and think you are 'cool', but they end up thinking 'isheep' and more money than sense, then you buy Apple. BUY ONE TODAY! And you too can be one of those people who hold up iPads at football matches to video the action!

Android.
Cheap and cheerful is the Android way, but be warned, you will never get updates to the newest version unless its on a Nexus. You will forever be frustrated by niggles, from google.app.onetwothree has stopped responding to your Android isn't compatible with this store app. But look on the bright side, you can root the device then install any .apk you wish. Worried about updates ? no dramas... their cheap enough you can just sling it and buy a new one.

Microsoft.
Windows tablets. Weird beasts with a personality disorder, but at least the doctor is working on a cure, and the patient is getting better every patch. These end up having some maintenance but they can do everything that anyone would need. And for people who whine about malware and viruses.... sorry, that's an issue with stupid users, not the OS. Unlike Android users you can sleep soundly knowing updates will be offered on every Windows tablet direct from Microsoft for a set life cycle, and unlike Apple, you know its a real computer, and you can run whatever you want on it, be it a fully fledged version of Photoshop or Visual Studio.

Joking aside, back to the deal. Its a good price for good tablet. Have some heat.

It appears that Linx are not honouring the Currys offer of a free keyboard. Should HUKD continue to post deals from Currys with the knowledge that they won't be honoured?

Wanted something with a bigger budget (and someone already mentioned that, and, er this is a Linx 1010 thread, for less than half the budget!). Went with this http://www.ebuyer.com/722730-asus-tp300la-touch-convertible-laptop-tp300la-dw175h

I have a Linx 10 myself, nearly a year now.

I've never heard from Currys again so I am obviously going to have to go through the Credit Card chargeback procedure, and fight their claim that they delivered a tablet not headphones.

Meanwhile I received my tablet & keyboard from Amazon yesterday. It's looking good, although I have a feeling it is going to run short on the App front, but that's a Windows thing. Nice hardware, jury is out on the software.

Yay - got someone dealing with things, Currys are not excelling themselves - I gave full reference codes for both my order, and the order in the box:

Currys Rep (Suspiciously) "So how do you know the order details of this other customer?"

"Erm - it's in the box that you sent me!"

I then had to wait 5 mins, and when he came back he announced that he agreed that I could return the headphones and that he had arranged for the the headphones to be collected on Thursday ...... "I'm not bothered about returning the headphones, I just want the tablet that I have bought"

Apparently Currys can't look into sending me the tablet that I've paid for until they have got the headphones back. So if I ever get a tablet, it will be next week or later ......

Thanks for nothing Lea X25603

Very well sealed, and with the correct delivery note inside for the headphones, so I know the full name and address of the person who has my tablet! The box was very light, and I understand that the tablet is quite heavy. I think that they have just mixed up the address labels, however it is turning into a nightmare to sort out, I got an answer 15 mins ago, and have been put into a queue to return the headphones. Apparently they will deal with sending a tablet once I have sent the headphones back.

Thanks 'sam_proctor95' any idea if that would be true even if it was returned/purchased on-line? I must say everything looks new I'm just surprised the screen protector had a few bubbles and specs of dirt underneath. Maybe that's just how they are. I peeled back the protector a few inches and when I tried to roll it back it looked much much worse, so perhaps it's ok. I'd like to get a tempered screen protector for it ideally, but there seems a bit of confusion as to whether the '10' protectors also fit the '1010'. They're not cheap so I don't want to take the risk yet. Hopefully the keyboard case will give enough protection. Just a shame it might be up to 60 days before I get it.

Returns at Currys are indicated by a white label on the box with a new barcode on it. If the product still has its original barcode then even if it a was a return it would have to have been a pristine (still boxed and sealed) return. Any opened boxes receive a white label.
MrFizzy
17 Nov 15 #119
Yes, box was in cellophane, but I don't think that's a guarantee it's not a return. Most large companies will have the ability to re-shrink-wrap goods. Putting a screen protector back on though can be a bit harder. The screen protector on mine wasn't too bad, but there were definitely a few small bubbles and a few dust spots underneath. That's what made me think it had been applied outside the factory. Maybe not though, maybe that's the way it is. Anyway, that's why I'm asking the state of anybody else's screen protector. Can anybody else say what theirs looked like please?

If you were making systems with DDR RAM I could understand. But 2GB of DDR3 RAM would outperform 4GB of DDR RAM.

Question for anybody who's bought one, what was the screen protector like? Mine had a few tiny bubbles and some specks of dust underneath. I'll be taking it off when I get the case, but I just wanted to check it was new i.e. Currys hadn't put one on a return.

Thanks

So does this mean their are two different versions of the 1010b knocking about, one with 2 full size and one mini USB, and one with just a mini USB? or did PC World get their description incorrect. It would be useful if you could find out if they are actually USB3 sockets.

Definitely has 2 full size USB sockets and 1 micro usb which is used for charging (not tested whether this can also be used for data). What I don't know yet is whether the full size sockets are USB3.0. They aren't blue and spec doesn't say they are USB3.0, but device manager says USB3.0. It would be great if they were.

I agree, but next time LEARN TO READ. /facepalm

When does 'speed of storage' equate to storage space. Learn to read, re-read it again then learn to think before you reply else you look even bigger tool than you did last time.

Maybe if your struggling with a Windows 10 tablet with less than 4GB, the issue isn't the tablet?

**edit** I did pen a long and useful reply asking about your 'setups' and how they 'struggle' but deleted it, at the end of the day it would be pointless, your minds already made up and you would offer no constructive reply.

As to anyone else, you don't need 4GB to run Windows 10 on a tablet. They work fine with 1GB, and even better with 2GB. I have had the Linx 8 with 1GB and it was acceptable for a consumer tablet, I've also had a Pipo 2GB and that was even better.

Used many setups on less than 4gb RAM and they all struggle pretty badly, couple that with a tablet CPU and you got frustration on your hands.
Tablets in general running windows are slow, irritating and sub par to Android. You also have no idea how computers work if you think storage space matters more than RAM when it comes to system responsiveness.
And 'your brain laughing at your own jokes' as a sentence makes zero sense, sorry champ

Check the sticker with the barcode on the side of the box. My box says 1010 but sticker says 1010b. I wonder if they intended to bring out multiple colours and the b just means black. I'm not sure there have been multiple revisions of the 1010.
Fleabum
15 Nov 15 2 #103
We could mention your brain laughing at your own jokes... but that would be pointless. You might not like his answer but he is correct, you do not need 4GB ram to run Windows 10 smoothly. Speed of storage medium has a bigger impact on responsiveness that amount of RAM, the only exception would be if you are running Windows 10 from a RAMdisk, but I would guess you would need 32GB of RAM for that.

I tested Windows 10 on various configurations since Insider build 10074 so I speak from experience of many situations, scenarios and hardware configurations. So what vast experience do you draw your "windows 10 needs 4gb RAM to run smooth" comment from?

Please get your facts right before you go spouting total carp, not only does it make you look a tool, but it also spreads incorrect information for other tools to quote.

Windows tablets are awful devices and I wouldn't even wish them on my worst enemy! Shoddy build quality, no optimised apps, awful UI and user experience.

The last windows tablet I had wouldn't load Netflix due to some DRM issue and the fix involved editing the registry, system services and using CMD! Using the Command Line on a tablet is absurd. I quickly returned it after that point. Also you have to worry about nonsense like Antivirus, Anti Malware, Disk Cleanup and other headaches since it thinks its a desktop PC.

Windows 10 doesn't seem to have helped either with many people complaining that it breaks some tablets touch drivers when upgrading from 8.

Seriously, avoid this and get an iPad or Android they are infinitely better.

But I just know someone will reply to this and say how Windows is so much better because you can run something like Windows 95 VM, IE Toolbar Master Pro, or some specialised server software that 99.99% of regular users have no need for.
Rich44 to junkshez
14 Nov 15 1 #88
lololol what a load of crap, just because you've had a bad experience with presumably a cheap tablet doesn't mean trash the whole ecosystem. I actually really like 8.1 on it the touch interface is a dream possibly even better than android, like live tiles! Even the desktop mode is usable

MrPuddington
13 Nov 15 #29
It is a decent tablet, but I am not sure the price is still justified. The CPU is ok for light work, the 32GB of storage are very tight (Windows 10 takes up about 10, and needs another 5 or 6 GB free to upgrades, so you can only store about 14 GB of apps and data), and the screen is not great. The battery is not great, and the tablet or Windows 10 has battery draining issues. The keyboard is pretty bad, especially considering how much money they charge for it.

If you can get the Miix 3 for 150 pounds, that is a significantly better tablet (although again only for light tasks).
sam_proctor95 to MrPuddington
13 Nov 15 #32
Storage is expandable, and the keyboard is free, there's nothing to stop you buying a cheap or not so cheap Bluetooth keyboard if you don't like the one from Linx.
Rich44 to MrPuddington
14 Nov 15 #85
What light tasks though? Mines running latest Office & Outlook well known resource hog runs like a peach on it so much so I leave it running all the time. I use Office, some games, email, Facebook etc & not had a single problem, I can go a couple of days between charges with frequent short usage or most of a day being on it most of the day.

I agree that this is a little too much seeing as it's not far from the 1010 price

Again don't really understand the "low" res, poor screen & weak cpu issues but each to their own. It's not perfect but get one for under £100 it's a LOT of tablet for the money bar NONE

I'd still get on eBay see if 3monkeys have one & put £90 offer in on it

Reserved in PC World Charlton. Took a look at the display model first, which although marked as a 1010B, did not have the two full sized USB ports, but was Windows 10. Asked staff to check and they confirmed that the 1010B they were going to supply was the same as that on display. No mention in the blurb on the box of the two full sized USB ports either. Decided not to bother.

Having had many Android devices, I think Windows on a tablet is a revelation, a mini-computer in your pocket. I've bought three of these Linx devices (8, 10, and rebadge Connect 7). I wouldn't bother with an Android tablet now. The cameras are rubbish on these, but nobody buys a tablet for a camera.

Ebooks were my sticking point but I've got used to Calibre now, tweaked the font and the colours, so I'm happy.

It goes without saying the Windows Appstore is absolutely rubbish - hated it that Microsoft binned the Skype app without any warning, too (you are forced to use the Desktop app now). Hopefully it will improve in time, but I won't hold my breath.

The Telcast X98 Pro, and apparently other Cherry Trail tabs, have overheating issues - the X98 Pro definitely does as I was watching the reviews/forums when it was first released.

Not a massive upgrade from the previous but worth it for me just for the keyboard which I really don't like on previous version. Also addition of 2 full USB sockets is a bonus - can anybody confirm whether these are USB3? I also like the new Micro USB charger socket so no longer any need to carry a special lead for it. Shame you have to wait 30 days before you can even apply for the free keyboard. Previous version also keeps waking up when I close the keyboard and hence is flat when I come to use it a few hours later. I think the keys push against the screen which wakes it up. Hopefully the new one won't have this problem. Great deal with the £30 off (toe this ends Monday). I see Currys are now also doing free next day delivery, even on a Sunday. Thanks OP.

I sold my previous generation Linx 10 as I was convinced that the flimsy proprietary charging port would fail at some point. I'm glad to see that it now has a micro-usb charging port. Other than that it was a good tablet.

You have laugh we I saw Ipad Pro, 2 inches bigger, and 1000 % more expensive for no reason. This is an excellent deal at realistic price.

It's worth noting that this should have 2 full size USB sockets as well making it better ror expansion that a lot of tablets. check the manufacturers website.

Not sure if this is allowed and apologies if not but I've got a pc world gift card I'm trying to get rid of. If anyone wants I'll buy this and sell it for £115, shipped to them.

May as well get one of those cheap PCs for the same price instead of lugging around a tab and separate keyboard. Hp stream is approx 150 sterling

These tablets are nicer looking than the older Linx model and the keyboard is sooooo much better than the old one which was pretty unusable.
androoski to glenner
13 Nov 15 3 #43
I agree that the new stuff is better, but I have the old one with the old keyboard and it's far from unusable as I use it often without any problem at all.
MrPuddington
13 Nov 15 #42
More compromises. The SD-card interface is slow, and tricky during suspend. The keyboard is not free, it is included. Of course you can buy another one, but then you are already at the price of the Miix 3, which has a half decent keyboard. Anyway, can you recommend a good keyboard with a touchpad?

I wish - the Edge browser is really not up to the scratch yet, and for some reason Chrome does not run well on these tablets (I think it likes a faster CPU and more RAM). And the facebook app does not even have pinch to zoom.
sam_proctor95
13 Nov 15 1 #41
It definitely is preference, this isn't really comparable with a Chromebook as it runs a full operating system with programs as well as apps, just trying to be constructive for the people who are interested

Put into context though the light tasks you refer to are everything out could do with a cheap android tab round this price plus you can run tons of old full fat pc games and applications, some awesome old games Run on these machines. Emulation on these for old consoles is pretty good to plus if you an Xbox one can be used as a portable extender running your xb1 games.. I can see the appeal of an android tab but these can do way more.

I wonder why they went with 1200 x 800 again - the "early" Linx 10s (Miix 3 10) had the same resolution but later models had 1920 x 1200, all under the same model number.

You don't get the free Office 365 on these like you did on the older Win 8.1 model but as above you get the office mobile apps. Its honestly an absolute steal at this price. If any one needs a cover the Targus Formfit case (made for this specific Linx device) is good along with the Targus sleeve. Not so keen on the Targus Impact Case.

Hmm, good one for a daughter to watch films with as it also has an HDMI port which is a bonus at this sort of price!
