Saw these in the states a few days ago. Over priced, under specced and the revolutionary idea of a pen is now a 'pencil' and clearly nothing new from Apple.

The bezels are too thick also. Really, after so many years of intelligence you would expect Apple to come out with something amazing. Instead they drip feed their sheep bit by bit.

Waste of money.

I really don't want to start any Apple/MS debates, but having being given a Surface Pro 4 for work (i5 256GB) I am totally blown away by the SP4 (in a good way).

Firstly... The screen is AMAZING. The pen is almost perfect and everyone who sees my SP at work wants it.

I like Apple, I have an iPad (typing this on my iPad now).. But seriously.. SP is great.

The not so good... Having issues with the dock and monitor support, but think it might be either a bad dock or software update required. So only able to connect to one external monitor at the moment. Not worried as that will be fixed eventually.

Back to the SP.. In meetings... I open my folio case and start writing.. Literally blows away everything else I have every used. All my engineering software is Windows eco system, so iPad pro didn't stand a chance.

Also, for the pretenders here trying to act "rich", it's quite shameful and embarassing you'd even have to call others working class. This is what I detest about apple fanboys, they can be so classless. I mean for a supposedly rich person why act so bankrupt of manners?

Its standard for Apple kit to be overpriced as everyone knows. They even lock you into having to pay more by going non standard, ie no usb then lightning now the watch charger non QI standard so you have to pay a lot more and not be able to use the same as everyone else http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/19/apples_watch_charging_pad_qi/

The price of these in this deal are lower yes but too much for broken kit that is overpriced anyway.

Definitely overpriced. Played with one in the apple store - as a 12" screen for web browsing, they are great - nice lightweight machine, and you can actually read text on the screen. At 700+ pounds, you 'avin a larff mate! At 200 pounds, they would be great.

Under Specced, compared to what, a Cray Super Computer? There is no other tablet on the market that comes close to the iPad Pro in terms of performance and that is a verifiable fact.

As to whether it fills your needs, is priced at more than it should be etc that is all debatable. But it is in no way under specced.

I bought 2 ipad mini 4s from Pixel Electronics. One was a UK model and the second was a Japanese import. Although the imported model has a non-UK charger, the ipads themselves are identical, with the standard Apple model numbers on the back. Both came with the same lightning charge cable.

Overall excellent service from Pixel, both dispatched after 4 days from UK with before 1pm delivery.

It's a nice deal but I can't see the appeal for this product.. It can't replace macbook or laptop using ios... Not having proper file management system is just a no go to use this as business related product like you would with laptops.

For other tasks Ipad air does the job equally good, sure media is improved but what's the fun watching films on such tint screen anyway.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of work do you use yours for? I was thinking of getting myself one for doing programming (Java, C#, websites, etc), drawing, and some creating 3D models in Blender. Some basic photo edits would be great too. Does yours do any of those things? I was thinking of the i5 to do those tasks but I've no idea if that's the one I would need (had my mind more on the 4GB RAM for cheaper price).

22 Nov 15 2 #38
Good question... It's early days and I am still getting used to the SP. My iPad is smaller (I have the standard iPad, not the mini). So size wise, iPad it's easier to carry about. It's cheaper and I won't have a heart attack if it breaks.

If the SP wasn't a work computer, I would switch to it fully. (Everything is logged and our company policy restricts eBay, Facebook etc.) So the iPad is going to stay for now.

So my circumstances aside, yes, SP can fully displace iPad in my opinion. I have used the SP on the sofa, kitchen table etc.. the larger screen size is nice but that isn't a fair comparison to the smaller standard iPad. I also like the rear memory card slot on the SP. I am so stick and tired of locked in memory on phones etc. Mine is full of my music, one sneaky concession to our company policy.

One thing... The SP naked (not in a case) is very light, but it needs a folio or similar case to keep the pen secure (I can't understate how AWSOME the pen is). The SP needs the pen. So the case adds a little weight, but you forget it after a while, it also protects the SP. anyone using expensive chuck about electronics needs to case it, otherwise it will break.

Surface Pro 4 leaves the IPad pro somewhere in the dark ages when comparing spec and performance. Having tried both there is NO comparison. But....having owned iPads since version one this is the best iPad they've made to date. Even if you only use it like a consumer device its is freaking awesome. Reading full size comics, watching films and YouTube. Loud speakers, gorgeous display, no parallax with the pencil so drawing is awesome. But yes there is no denying it's so very very expensive (case front and back a total rip off) and primarily a tablet for consuming content.

I've spent some time the last couple of days with a surface pro 4 i5 and while it is a beast I'd prefer to use my windows desktop computer for real work and as a tablet only the surface is not so great. It works but not as well as an iPad. Windows is still too damn fiddly when using as a tablet and already I've had display driver issues. Yes the iPad has its moments of glitching as well but 90% it's runs flawless and is always on. If my only computer (with full operating system) was a surface I'd still want a tablet.

Things the surface got so right, the pen and the kickstand. The friction with the new pen is perfect and better than the apple pencil for feel and feedback. The kickstand makes using the device in lots of different positions so practical. Apple really should have copied this feature!

Had a play with one, the stylus/pencil thingy is the best I have used so far, and that's when comparing it to the Samsung Note's and Surface Pro's. But apart from that, it is just a massive iPad. I guess if you're looking for a big iPad, this is perfect. Heat added for the price. Can't argue as I do feel like Apple take the pish with their pricing just because they can (iPad pro cases being a prime example) but no matter how many times I use an android device I just don't like the software and it's just the little things. My nexus 7 2013 gets love as my showbox device but I always go back to iPhone and iPad. Apple get somethings right, hardwear is most defiantly one (and customer service) so hence the loyal following.

Having owned an iPad Pro, that I returned today I can say that, for me anyway, it's just a big iPad and hideously overpriced at that. I've gone back to my Surface Pro 3 now.

The iPad Pro isn't a bad device it's just hard to find a place for it; the pencil is out of stock, very few apps are properly optimised for the Pro, the keyboard is expensive and US format. I found my Air 2 much better all round.

As to Pixel Electronics, I'm fairly sure they're on a tax/import duty dodge and won't supply proper invoices. If you're a consumer that's kind of ok - but as a business user it probably won't be.

I am an electronics design engineer, so I run a couple electronic CAD packages and some embedded software environments. I don't do graphics or photo editing as such, but I do have a graphics program on it (Photoplus) along with Pageplus for panel artwork etc. I also have the full office suite and use it all apart from databases.

You really need some extras with this SP to get the most out it. For me, I need and use the following:
Two docks. One at work and one in my home office. These are not cheap.
Folio case, get one that holds the pen.
Type cover.
Large screen(s) at home and work. It should support two external monitors, with the SP screen giving you three, but I can only run one external monitor.
Large capacity microsd card.

So there.. You can easily double the cost of the SP with all the "extras". That's my setup.. Other people have different needs. Best of luck.
CoolDude0123
25 Nov 15 #68
Thanks for the reply. That's quite a setup you have. I guess I would need more time to think about it and try it out for a while if possible. Was really looking something small and handy that would be great for doing the things I listed above on the go or to get some stuff done handy.

Overpriced is an opinion. Whereas it is a fact that this is a good deal, the definition of a good deal being a relatively low price. People looking to buy one will benefit from this deal. Nobody will benefit from your useless post, other than the sheep who bash Apple products.

I bet you they don't.

The iPad Air 2 is still £399 at Apple so they are hardly going to sell the highest spec tablet close to the same price as the next model down.

Most Apple stores have none in stock of the higher GB models and neither do the large retailers like John Lewis,Argos, currys, and as for the Apple pencil, you got no chance of getting one anywhere,so there is no need for the price to drop seeing there is clearly a high demand for them.

Would be nice mind if it did drop massively

No I hope you went there to gain an education not wave around your attendance like a status symbol. At the end of the day, you can get a 128 gb Macbook Air for a price close to that of a 128gb iPad pro, and it comes with a FREE keyboard!

Well, I'm not into iOS stuff as a rule (love Macs, so not anti-Apple, just think iPhone/iPad are poor...), but anyway.

Always out for a relative bargain, I have just ordered a 32GB one of these - with code it was down to £575, but it also tells me I will get 9,225 points, with 100 points being worth £1. That been the case, have I just kinda paid £480ish for the iPad Pro?

I'm new to Rakuten, so not 100% clear on the points thing.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Not retina
Not a tablet
No pencil support
No touch screen

Plenty of people will buy this product so there is very little chance of Apple slashing prices. Across the internet people are flaming the ipad pro as pointless, it is not - its just not for you (and I have had one and returned it). Right now its version 1 so can only get better. Pencil support for Artists and designers is amazing and only just bested by Surface Pro 4 stylus. As a media consumption device it is the best ipad Apple have made (big screen, huge battey, awesome speakers) but for me it was just a bit too heavy and quite alot too expenisive - today. Version 3 will probably have everything I want.

Fantastic price/deal. However I have one, and I would rather have gone for the surface pro. For all my BS about criticising sheeple, I for an ipad air 2 in 2014 and then regretted it as I want a full OS device like the surface and then I went and got this. I love it though but I agree, a surface pro is better, even if its more expensive.

Also, for the pretenders here trying to act "rich", it's quite shameful and embarassing you'd even have to call others working class. This is what I detest about apple fanboys, they can be so classless. I mean for a supposedly rich person why act so bankrupt of manners?

It's just a bigger, faster, slightly tweaked version of the iPad Mini 2, which can be had new for £169. I would also rather be seen carrying a mini around than this behemoth. Too big in both size and price.

Okay, lets compare the current range using Apple's suggested pricing (they can all be found cheaper elsewhere).
*Mini 2 £219 - cheapest 8" model - base price
*Mini 4 £319 - faster processor, minor upgrades (base +£100)
*Air £319 - 2" bigger, minor upgrades (base +£100)
*Air 2 £399 - 2" bigger, faster processor, minor upgrades (base +£180)
*Pro £679 - 5" bigger, much faster processor, 2x RAM, minor upgrades (base +£460)

Bearing in mind that functionality is virtually identical, which one looks stupidly over-priced?

Buying 3x Mini's will give you ~greater combined processing power, 50% more RAM, 19" screen estate, and plenty of redundancy.

How is it less portable than an ipad air ? An ipad air won't fit in your pocket and so needs to be carried with one hand, you can carry the pro in one hand.the pro will also fit into a regular sized bag/backpack,no suitcase required.

Had a play with a display model in Currys on the weekend.

It's literally a big iPad. A massive iPad. This thing is bigger than my head (I'm not joking) and makes the 12.3-inch Surface Pro 4 look diminutive.

The apps just look enormous and, frankly, ridiculous. You're going to hit the same brick walls productivity-wise with this as you would with an iPad Air in a keyboard case as iOS and the lack of a file system is simply too restrictive.

I mean...who is this for? Writers and bloggers? Nope, the keyboard case is sub-par (and the Logitech one is really heavy - you might as well buy a laptop). Artists? Not really as the full-fat software doesn't run and the Surface 3 is much cheaper just for sketching. Musicians, video editors? Not without Avid Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Premiere etc.

The screen is stunning - really, really superb. But even just for consumption this thing is awkward. Without a kickstand, you always need some way of propping this up to watch stuff for any length of time.

Microsoft are the darlings right now but I'm old enough to remember when everyone - and I mean everyone - hated them as a company and despised Windows even more. It's now trendy to bash Apple but they make well-built, well-designed machines with a solid, reliable OS - for the most part.

This, though, is a lazy design and Tim Cook is really pushing his luck. It's ridiculously overpriced and all that power is for nothing without the software to back it up. I can see there being an awful lot of buyer remorse down the line.

An Air fits into my wife's handbag and within my glovebox. The mini will fit into a man's jacket pocket if needed, and I find it's size very convenient for commuting. The Pro will need either a large handbag, or a laptop bag to keep it tucked away when not in-use. For me, I would rather just carry a macbook than an equally bulky iPad Pro.

Saying all that, I also prefer phones to be 5.1" or less, but there are plenty of people happy with bigger. Perhaps big tablets will catch-on, but not my cup of tea.

I disagree with the view on MS being darlings. Windows 10 is still a beta product and poorly designed. However at least they got their PRO tablet right which Apple certainly haven't in this product.
Biggunspaul
7 Dec 15 #132
I don't believe this is a laptop replacement no matter what Apple or anyone else says,I also don't believe it is a pro device, but if you are after just a massive tablet with top quality build, stunning screen with plenty of power for the future then this is the device to go for.

It's the ideal tablet for those who want to do normal iPad things like watch videos and web browsing and so on,but not for what Apple would have people believe.

I'm more than happy with mine as I only use it for the above uses plus video editing and a laptop does not appeal to me anymore hence why this suits my personal needs.
Orville
7 Dec 15 #133
Who said that an iPad was the only thing that women need to fit within their handbags? A 13" tablet is far more cumbersome and likely to bend/damage than 10" or 8" versions. In pure cm² terms the Pro covers 674cm², the Air2 407cm² and the Mini 4 274cm². That makes the Pro 65% larger than the (already large) Air and 146% bigger than the Mini. By comparison an A4 piece of paper is 624cm². Whilst the technology is great the size is silly.

I like most Apple products, but this one I will never buy. The screen size has outgrown the OS and they have lost the plot. I would rather lug a macbook around.
Interloper
7 Dec 15 #134
Oh, I agree with you. But I see an awful lot of Apple haters these days lining up to say how wonderful Windows (and PCs in general) are in comparison to anything Apple produces. I can recall when Windows was something you merely tolerated because you had no other real choice. It was marginally above syphilis on the list of things you loved having in your life.

In many ways, the ascendancy of Apple has forced every other manufacturer in producing better products for us all. We should be grateful to them. Smartphones before 2007 were diabolical, buggy junk. Tablets were underpowered garbage (I remember the shocking Windows XP things that weighed almost as much as a desktop tower and the Archos trash that couldn't get through a video or album without crashing). Laptops rarely lasted longer than 2 hours on a charge.

So thank you, Apple. You took existing technologies and made them infinitely better than what was out there. As a result, we now have terrific ultrabooks and hybrids like the Surface with all-day battery life; awesome tablets like the Xperia Z4 and even excellent budget slates like the Lenovo A10 Tab 2. And without iOS, Android wouldn't exist as we know it. Google tore up what they were doing and started again when Jobs demoed the first iPhone.

Apple deserve their success and stopped the peddling of so much utter crap by forcing others to compete. Sadly, the modern Apple seems more interested in gouging customers with 5400rpm hard drives in £1200 4K iMacs, producing outrageously-priced watch straps and blowing up the size of their iPads. As other manufacturers pull ahead, maybe they'll wow us all again someday.

Is it just me or has everyone forgotten (I couldn't read every comment, so I might have missed it), the Samsung TabPRO or NotePRO 12.2", these beasties: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/tablets/others/SM-T9000ZKABTU or http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/tablets/others/SM-P9000ZKABTU

Samsung had this out at least a year ago and it's pretty much the Android competitor to the iPad Pro but without the stupid price tag and can be had for well under £300 now. It'll also take a microSD so you can pop a 128GB or 200GB card into it too.
Paradroid888
7 Dec 15 1 #137
Comparing it to an iPad Air 2 and calling it overpriced perhaps doesn't take into account that an iPad Air 2 128GB is 559 RRP so the difference isn't that huge.

Calling the Surface Pro better is a bit overly simplistic. Microsoft calls it "the tablet that can replace your laptop". Sure, it can do a laptops job but it's hopeless as a tablet due to the limited or poor quality app selection.

The iPad Pro is the same compromise the other way round, it is a great tablet (if the size doesn't bother you) but it can't replace your laptop yet. The question for me is will there be enough improvement in the software before the iPad Pro 2 comes out to justify buying it?

It's too early for a no-compromise single device. I would buy an iPad Air and either a surface pro or a MacBook Pro. That's got to be the best option for the next 2-3 years
StillTheFlyest
7 Dec 15 #138
But when the Note Pro 12.2 first came out it was £650. That was too much for my mate who wanted it but settled for the 10" Note Pro at £400. Now its so slow and apps crash all the time, not to mention that most of the apps were stretched mobile phone apps.

I got my iPad 3rd gen coming up to 4 years ago. Great product. I need to upgrade. Was waiting for the iPad Air 3 but this is a great deal so very tempted. With 10% and cashback can get 128gb gold or silver for £638. Great deal to be honest. £161 off RRP for a month old product is great.

I know a lot of people hate apple but how I see it is you pay the extra because you prefer the iOS or Mac OS X experience. If you like the Windows or android experience good for you. You'll be much better off financially in the long run than me.

Eh?

When Apple launched the first iPod Touch (so, something actually worth watching video on - the original iPods could manage it but the miniscule screen rendered it pretty much pointless) I already had a Cowon A2 which played more formats than the Touch and had a battery life of 10+ hours for video. Where the Touch might just have got through a single film, if you were lucky.

In fact, about a decade later, I still have my A2 and it still works perfectly! (And the audio quality from it still awesome)

I have an iPad. But I'm not a fan of Apple's walled eco-system and continual use of proprietary tech like the Qi wireless changing on their watch (their latest example). Which will ONLY work with the charger they produce (which costs about 3x as much as a generic one .... of course).

If nothing else, they have (or had, I think they have slipped in recent years) a fantastic marketing department ....

I love these pointless arguments in every god damned Apple post. No one gives a hoot what obscure tech you've all used or purchased instead, what you prefer, if you dont like Apple, if you bum lick apple etc, yet people constantly insist on declaring their opinion when it has no relevance in the deal. 9 pages of comments and about a page worth are about the deal, the rest is knob heads e-posturing. How long did it take the seller to ship after order, and how long for delivery? Expected it to be a few days so just trying to manage my expectations.

FWIW I am a photographer but have bought this mostly for personal use. I will make use of the pencil for notes, but enjoy my iPad but always wished it was available larger. Movies in bed or being able to do work around the office without carting a full laptop or using a desktop, and enough screen real estate and resolution to use Citrix / Remote Desktop properly.

Will probably wait for a better 3rd party keyboard though.

Interloper to jumbopants
9 Dec 15 #158
They don't make a case for the iPad Pro. You have to buy a Smart Cover and back cover seperately. Cynically, why sell one case when they can sell you two? Practically, it's so the Smart Connector always remains exposed - the Smart Keyboard can still be used with the back cover attached.

Both are available in Apple stores or in the iPad accessories section on Apple's web site. Not cheap, either:

Smart Cover (front) - £45
Silicone Case (back) - £65

That'll be £110, sir. Better check what's on eBay...
plewis00
9 Dec 15 #155
But the software isn't there *yet* and unless you must be an early-adopter then I would wait. I just can't see it offering substantially more than a regular iPad. Do you have the pencil? By everyone loves it, do you 'love it, 700-ish pound love it', or love the novelty - because everyone I demoed it to (including my first impressions) were excitement and ohhs and ahhs until that wore off. At a more realistic price I think it would be more popular but I genuinely feel as though someone in Apple chose the pricing to see if people would actually bite, a start price of £499 scaling up would be better yet not out of the equation.
khirsah
9 Dec 15 #156
Why do you care how much someone enjoys or is willing to pay for a device? Everything you are describing is anecdotal or opinion, others will have the same experience others will have different experiences. If he didn't think it was worth it he wouldn't be posting...
plewis00
9 Dec 15 #159
What, so I'm not entitled to my opinion now? I was replying to him - and no, it isn't anecdotal. I asked if he had the pencil which does make it different to a normal iPad but you can't get the things as they are sold out, I wanted to understand his usage case better and see what people are doing with them; and as someone who owned one and returned it I think I'm in a good position to do so.

And I also had problems with Pixel Electronics, I could not exact a VAT number from them so I couldn't be sure they would provide a VAT receipt - that is not opinion, that is fact.

We are expecting to have your item dispatched early next week. I apologise for the slight delay as we have had a large amount of orders backlogged due to Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sales.
Please don't worry, the order will not be cancelled if not shipped by 12/12, it will just show up as delayed.

Have to say absolutely cracking piece of kit, everyone at work and my girlfriend are all green with envy. Not upgraded since iPad 3rd gen and had a 16gb, so having this is now amazing difference. Well worth the price paid, which was far far below RRP;

£720 in the store (£79 below RRP)
Less £40 discount code
