Same with any very recent car - expect 75% of listed combined mpg for petrol and 70% for diesel in the winter (diesels take twice as long to fully warm up and be their best) if driven on a 10/15 mile journey without driving it like a nun. Stop start usage on the test cycle massively skews the mpg as the test cycle sees the car at a standstill for 24% of the time.
My wife has an "80mpg" Audi A1 1.6TDI, with very similar output (116ps on the Audi, 110ps on the Hyundai) and it does 55mpg consistently. If we were willing to drive it at 60mph everywhere on 100 mile journeys, we might get up to 75mpg. Best had was early 60s.

i concur, nice motor, more economical than my 745Li but no where near 78mpg but then with today's efficiency ratings racket I never expected it to be over 70mpg, was hoping for 65mpg lime as my old C3 1.4hdi from 2003 regularly gave 64mpg on the same route.

Maybe he should have asked for a 'personal mpg quote' based on exactly how and where and when he drives then? Surely they must have an algorithm to predict that for every driver, every tankful by now?
All this false outrage over 'official' mpg figures. They are comparison figures based on all vehicles going through the same test. A little hint here for the hard of understanding: YOUR CAR WILL NOT ACHIEVE THE OFFICIAL FIGURES.
I'd say 50mpg from a car of this size and type is pretty good. Would have been nearer 30 not many years ago and the emissions would have been a multiple of what they are these days.

Take a look at the biggest polluting vehicle type for your town or city on your local authority Web site and you'll find diesel cars way ahead in terms of nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions.Leading to some towns and cities exceeding WHO safe levels for air quality on a regular basis. In the long run these emissions are harming young and old.
Please look at the facts before leasing or buying another diesel.

NOx is a problem in choked cities, not so much of a problem elsewhere - it disperses quickly. Modern diesels with a DPF put out fewer particulates than very modern direct injection petrol engines (these petrol cars are working more like diesels). Those petrol particulates are smaller, disperse further and are more easily inhaled than the diesel ones. By all means get the pre-DPF diesels off the road. Petrol cars are naturally low on NOx (the lower temps and pressures required for combustion don't support copious NOx generation), but they are by no means that "clean". Benzene used as an anti-knock agent is one of the worst carcinogens you can come across.
I swapped a diesel for a petrol and the exhaust tips are filthy with carbon residue, the diesel's ones never were.

Cold voting because it's diesel is a little naive. The i30 is Euro 6 diesel engine. Euro 6 diesel cars will at least emit 50 per cent less nitrogen oxides than a Euro 5 diesel. The cap is 80 mg/km, compared to a 180 mg/km allowance for Euro 5 diesels.

I've had this car now for almost two months, and what a joy. Some nice features like adaptive lighting, and the rear seats fold completely flat to make a huge packing surface. Engine is remarkably smooth, and runs well at low revs, which suits my driving style. The MPG comments previously made are pretty accurate, in city driving I get about 57/58 MPG, motorway driving is low 60's. No issues with ABS, traction control, or anything else - the build quality is really soild. Note there was a facelift mid-2015, so the front looks slightly different than in the picture (much of a muchness). If you're looking for a boy racer though, this ain't it. Overall, great car.

Directional headlights have been on cars since the 1930s (The Czech produced Tatra). Citroen put them on their mass produced DS model in 1967. It wasn't until 2003 that manufacturers took up the idea again and various manufacturers have fitted them since then.
There's also been other headlamp innovations such as the Rabinow dimmer and Bone-Midland lamps which were next used by any manufacturer even though they were of cutting edge feature and design.
Who'd have thought headlights could be so interesting (or boring) >
I got into the diesel thing in the 90s to mid 2000s, then I tried petrol, there's no way ever that I'd go back now.

I'm using this version above 3 years. My best consumption 81 mpg - drove alone, no bags, distance 250 miles. 2 weeks ago family + bags: Coventry - Edinburgh 78 mpg. Both times no DPF cleaning. Excellent car except DPF. Urban consumption ~45mpg.

I think you'll find your wrong.
Try looking at some actual local authority air quality figures and you'll find the biggest polluters by % are diesel cars.

They obviously have a few i30's to shift! I dealt on the same model 3 weeks ago (delivery early Dec.), 24 x £144 payments, 10k miles pa. I got choice of colour, had to be metallic though. All I need is my insurance and a 2 year service when i hand it back ..around £180. Never leased before but the deal suits my circumstances. Lease arrangement was direct from a hyundai dealer in north of England. Spoke to local hyundai dealer in Scotland who said he couldn't get close to the deal.

Oxford Street regularly one of the most polluted streets in Europe - cars are banned.
Depends on the traffic mix of course but most busses are awful and you only have to stand on a station platform to realise how bad diesel trains are. Cars are very very good these days (Euro 6) - there are just too many of them.

The Panorama documentary last night is worth a watch. Stuipid government encouraging people into 'clean' diesel in the first place and crooked car manufacturers cheating the test (even Euro 6). To be honest the whole things a mess and it'll be Joe public that pays unfortunately. :disappointed:

There will be an excess mileage charge in pence per mile stipulated at the beginning of the contract. If you go over you just pay that amount at the end when you hand the car back
