Ok so not a deal for all but for those looking for iphones for Christmas, GiffGaff have reduced the 5s by £60, much cheaper than buying direct from apple and fully unlocked. a tenner also off the 6 as well. you will need a giffgaff sim or they will send one out as part of the deal, for new sims they needs to be loaded with the minimum amount of £5. You can also order a sim from the likes of quidco and get cash back or through a referral link (don't post them on here) where you and the seller will get credit back.

Quidco cash back is available up to £20

I bought one of these after the HUKD tip off. Must say that migration from 4s was butter smooth and am very pleased with the way it actually works, as opposed to the spec. Needed it to pair with an iWatch I'd received as a present.

Is this deal hot? Yes
Is this phone worth £319? If you're into spending a lot on old specs, sure why not.
iPhones are more of a fashion item. Most people who buy them have no idea about phones or specs.

You are a little late to the party on that one. Have a look at this tread and look at the difference and 5 pages and not one apple user moaning about the deal. As has been said before many times people don't buy Apple devices for the spec they buy it because that's what they want. Wonder if the research is true when they say Apple users have more class than android users, probably so look at the posts and the fact that 30% of new iPhone sales are to people who had previously had an android phone.

Yes any sim will work straight out of the box - only suggested using the GIFFGAFF SIM to ensure that the phone was registered to GIFFGAFF correctly to make sure cashback worked. If your not interested in cashback then thats fine.

and the £5 is a goodybag that give you 100 mins, 200 Txts and 100Mb Data - no further purchase necessary...

I just put a 3 SIM in, worked and that's that.
Now left with a £5 GiffGaff 'Hokey Cockey' SIM pack, I understand that the £5 credit on it only gets 'released' if I top up with another £10. Is that correct? Or does it need activating with a credit card number, and recurring subscription will be enabled whether I ask for it or not?

Yup ...

- buy the phone
- Put the Giff Gaff sim in it
- Text or phone someone so you have used it on the Giff Gaff SIM (needs to activate to GiffGaff network if you want Quidco/TCB to work)
- take out Giff Gaff SIM
-inset any UK SIM you want
-away you go !

wasnt complainnig about the post, just that its not comparing like with like - brand new from a recognised seller Vs second hand from a relatively unknown site.

having been here a long time you would have realised how the site works :disappointed: that's a second hand phone, unknown condition and with a 60 days warranty compared with a brand new unused full apple warranty. Right - all you sad-acts need to stop arguing about iPhones vs Androids.... it doesn't matter.

The fact is, you will not find this phone cheaper anywhere else.... so it's a hot deal.
Nuff said!

No-one cares if there is a more powerful android phone available for cheaper, we all know what Apple do.
If you aren't in the market for an iPhone - don't bother commenting.

But this is still a good deal.... might not be a good "phone solution" to some.... but the deal is solid.

(btw... these will lock to the network of the first SIM card you install)

up to 2013 or around then giffgaff wasn't a real operator in Apple terms, if you used an iPhone before then you had o2 and not giffgaff shown on the network and had to add other information to get the internet to work and couldn't use the voicemail via the voicemail button. In 2013 Giffgaff became a full operator and shortly after that started selling Iphones as part of the deal started selling totally unlocked iphones.

more details
https://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Help-Support/unlocked-iPhone-6plus/td-p/15935251

however, check post 20 here, shows that on occasion they have locked incorrectly but once a message is sent to GG they fix it for you. Just to be sure, I would get a free sim from quidco or somewhere and check :disappointed:

Anyone in the market should grab the grey 32GB one soon.

The Gold is not sold on the Apple site (they only have the 5S in Silver or Grey), so is probably not available to GiffGaff either. The Silver is now back in stock on GiffGaff, and my impression from their website is that GiffGaff will continue with these two at the current prices.

I assume you either have a different interpretation of 'nouse' to me or you are again being insulting where there is no need? For the record my intellect and common sense tells me it is pointless paying a fortune for a phone that does things I don't need or want from it. I upgrade to a model 2 below the current one cheaply each year simply because after a year or so my phone is pretty worn out being as it was second hand in the first place, and without starting to invest a lot in repairs I may as well replace with a 2 year old phone again.

To be honest my 3GS did all I wanted from it but it basically wore out. Now after a year my 4 has a cracked back and the home button is sticky (electrical contact cleaner drizzled into the top of the button helps for a while though)

As I've said previously, I have an Android (Samsung) work phone and dislike it. Quite possibly it's down to my lack of patience to resolve issues but, for example, I forward emails with attachments to my own email on my iPhone as I find it far easier to view them on there.

I'm not sure why I bother to keep trying to explain to you why I have, and like, an iPhone. It costs me very little as I previously explained (sell my 4 for £40-50 notes next year and but a second hand 5 for under £100 - my wife's was £80 this year.

I wouldn't say other phones are better/worse/****/used by morons etc as some Android users insist. It's all about free choice. Those same people who say new iPhone users are wasting their money are doubtless 'wasting' money elsewhere in their choice of utility company, car, insurance company, food choices, etc etc. Ultimately we live in a country where if nobody wants to pay this for this deal they don't have to. The fact it is nearly sold out indicates it must have been deemed a good deal by enough people. Just because you don't think it is doesn't make you right.

I'm confused. I normally download all my music on my laptop or desktop then connect it to my phone then drag and drop it to my music folder. If i was on the go i can easily download straight to my phone without my desktop or laptop then move the mp3/FLAC to my preferred folder. The reason i download mainly everything from home and not on the go is because it's more comfortable sitting down in front of a desk or laptop on my lap.
buglawton
3 Nov 15 #154
Exactly, you need a laptop so you can't do it on-the-go, eg when travelling without laptop.

Just a thought it may be worth trying john lewis for a price match i have no idea if its possible but seeing as the 32gb 5s is selling for £419.00 with JL and if it was possible you would get the 2 year warranty without any additional issue down the line if something goes wrong after the year.

I use my iphone for day to day as a phone, as I just find the music management and podcast management easier. But I use my Galaxy Tab for games, and watching movies (especially as it can connect to hotel TVs via HDMI) and has a bigger screen for the train.

Its horses for courses - I just dont get the arrogance of some of the Android community in trying to dictate to people what they would be "better to buy" - vive la difference !

I hate to interrupt mid rant but I could have sworn this was a deal thread for an iPhone 5s.

As an aside, just drag and drop your free/Amazon MP3s into the 'Automatically add to iTunes folder' and everything will be taken care of, well, automatically. You can probably set up the Amazon downloader to automatically pop the files in that location too.
Al3x4nd3r
3 Nov 15 #150
that is one of the reasons I dislike in apple products, restrictions! You can basically have, what you can buy on iTunes. No thanks I want to change at least my theme every now and then, when I get bored. I'm still waiting to see when apple is going to offer qhd screen in they products I guess when it's dirt cheap so they still make loads of money on the cheap hardware they sell. Now ppl will say - " but it's the feel that gives you when you hold it" . Well the only feeling I get is, wanting to bash it, on the floor. I'd like to see how an iPhone compares to other top end phone like nexus 6p buy simulating 1440p not 1080p
buglawton
3 Nov 15 #146
I don't find iTunes simple. If I want to download some songs from Amazon (because only this way do I get straightforward MP3 files and a free CD) on the go, and add them to my music collection on the iPhone, it's a no-go.

If I want to add some songs from a CD at home to my wife's iPhone - but using the nearest handy laptop to do it - it's not authorised - a no-go.

Or if I want to buy songs via iTunes and later export them to play on my car player - because I use a cheap MP3 player that I can leave permanently connected in the car - again, a no-go.

So many restrictions. I can and do work around them but will never be happy with iTunes.

3 Nov 15 #149
The key with iTunes is to have one account for all devices you have then manage it all through the same iTunes account. You do need to use only authorised laptops but easier to use a single laptop. Authorising it is easy as well. I never buy from iTunes don't agree with you don't own it policy but downloading from Amazon or even google and you can automatically add them to iTunes as well at the same time.

Cheap MP3 can easily be managed but you don't do that via iTunes just add normally through your music.

What I don't like is what happened to us recently when iTunes updated and wiped our iTunes library but now knowing that can happen it's a case of backing up the library at the same time as you back up the computer.
phanco
3 Nov 15 4 #145
Youve nailed it for me there - its the ecosystem that seals it for me : the very restrictive environment that will annoy techies is the whole selling point - my 75 year old dad can work his iphone and itunes, as can my wife and (obviously) my kids. You get a lot more choice in your media management with Android - but you cant beat the simplicity of itunes combined with an iphone : although if anything thats gone backwards of late ...

This phone is possibly overprices based on the technology : a moto G for £100 will probably produce a better benchmark score = but that misses the whole point. Your paying a premium to join an ecosystem. If your not happy to do that, fine, but dont take the ranting moral high ground that we see to often on HUKD.

Too many people dont realise that their opinion is not fact.

the problem with that is most of the young generation don't really care about the spec, its the status that comes with Apple products. Like it or not Apple has such a strong brand that they don't need to bring out the next big thing, they did that and caught the customers way back when. Who would have thought people would camp out over night to buy a phone, my generation simply don't get it but the younger ones will camp out and pay over the odds on launch day just to say they got the new phone.

From the sales figures it also suggests that Android users are switching to Apple in large numbers which could be because of the whole end to end product range, as has been said before once you are on iTunes its very difficult to have different ways of managing content across different devices. Look at what Google had to do with the chromecast make it work with Apple devices who would have though that.

Problem I see with all of this is the rivalry, its worse than football rivalry, will never understand why buying a Apple phone will cause some people so much anger :disappointed:

Ordered the 32GB model Sunday afternoon, it arrived Monday midday. You're obliged to buy a GiffGaff SIM, minimum spend £5, that should be mentioned in the deal. My logic is, as an Apple cult member (attempts to leave the cult have failed), and finding the iPhone 6 too big for belt clip/pocket use, the iPhone 5s is the only viable replacement for my old 16GB 4s. The 4s is still working beautifully and is fast enough on IOS 9, but will now go on EBay and raise about £80.

DominicPTS to RiverDragon8
3 Nov 15 1 #137
But that's it exactly. You are missing the point. The point is those who are used to and like Apple products will stick to them. I've been told for years by techy types that this Android phone or that Android phone is technically superior, but the occasions I've looked at one, or had one for work, it feels unfamiliar and I spend ages working out where menus are or "how do I do this?" The fact the camera is better, the processor is faster, "it's not restricted to iTunes" (I have a friend who has a massive music collection on his iPhone and never paid for any of it) etc is really not relevent to someone if they are happy with an iPhone and aren't bothered if something is available that is technically deemed to be "better".

I used the analogy with cars earlier. If one is technically superior to another, costs less and is reviewed as the better car, people will still choose the "inferior" car. This might come down to something as simple as colour choice or they love the design of the dashboard, or the feel of the switches. Do you see what I mean? Not everyone is bothered by spec. If it does what they want how they want it to then that's fine with them.

The price v other phones is an issue I wouldn't disagree with. However people pay over the odds for things the world over. I try to educate people at work about discount codes, cashback etc and most glaze over. Yet those same people will call me a lemming for having an iPhone, regardless of the fact I'm happy with an older model and it costs me less than £50 a year in depreciation when I change from one old model iPhone to the next (my next upgrade next year will be an iPhone5!)
mad2477
3 Nov 15 #136
The form factor of the 5s makes it the best phone. If only android had a phone as well designed and built at the 5s I'd come back... Sony has made a good effort but every manufacturer (including Apple now) have decided bigger is better which simply isn't true!! Make small phones again please!

When it comes to technology IT'S ALL ABOUT SPEC'S. Year in year out phone makers are trying to out do each other, this phone at this price with these spec's is unbelievable. If you ever owned a flagship Android phone 2013 onwards we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Can't disagree there, I have a Sony Z3 Compact which is great, and work give me an Iphone 6. I just don't like the OS, the phone whilst more premium than the Sony, feels cheaper than old Iphones, I guess because it is just so light.

The only thing I like about Iphones is the camera, my girlfriend is always astonished when I chuck the Iphone in my laptop bag and carry on using my Sony! Each to their own.
V6ALFISTI

Seems like alot for a 2 generations old phone, I know it's time machine time but when the Iphone 6 dropped to £460 odd, I put it through bespoke offers and paid the equiv of £355 for my girlfriend (and cashback actually paid on that)...but surely not long until the 6 is openly available at that price from resellers?

Correct, I bought my first iphone (iphone 6) after years on Android (last one being Nexus 5 2013). I used the ebay £50 off offer and 6x Nectar points to get it for £330.

(For the record, unlocked brand new, registered on Apple website with 1 year warranty and have tried a few mobile operator sims, so hasn't locked as some are suggesting).

It's nice and I'll try to stick with it for 12 months.

But ios 9 just isn't as good as android 6 marshmallow. Hardware wise it seems to be a bit faster than the Nexus 5. Materials wise it obviously feels very nice.

Was it worth it over say the Nexus 5X or LG G4? Probably not but at least I've tried it.

It's because people are prepared to pay it. I'd suggest, far from it just being what people like you think, that it is because it is not all to do with spec and numbers, it's about feel, familiarity and the way it feels to use. It's like cars - just because one is better on paper doesn't mean the other one is totally inferior and that not one person should buy it. What many geeks don't realise is that if a phone does everything we want of it and more, telling us that one with a different OS that does even more than more than we want from it is not really of interest if all we want to do is send texts, make calls, surf the web and listen to music. Most phones do this admirably, and a split second faster but an OS that is alien to us isn't going to convince us to change. I for example have an Android phone for work that's supposed to be technically better than my iPhone4, but my iPhone4 feels like comfy slippers whereas I the work phone just doesn't feel right and I don't like it at all.

This phone or the LG G4? (3rd best phone on this planet right now) or the Moto X 2nd gen (Best phone of the year 2014) for £200-220.
If you want to make a comparison for like for like phones that came out in the same year then it's the Iphone 5s vs LG G2 (Best phone of the year 2013). The LG G2 is twice the phone for 3rd of the money.
If this deal was for the Iphone 6 i wouldn't hesitate to vote this hot but £300 for old spec like this??? Unbelievable!!!

Interesting to see Giff Gaff supplies them unlocked. A while back, any iPhone not bought directly from Apple would lock to first network used. When did this Apple policy change? It's an important detail for me as the value difference to me happens to be in the £80 ballpark.

Also, the 32GB version is £349. i'd be migrating from a 4s with 16GB and trust me, there's never enough memory. I have 5GB music, a few photos, say 150MB BBC iPlayer, 600MB satnav and then a long string of apps which are the point of owning an iPhone in the first place. What with updates roosting in my iPhone seemingly almost as soon as the previous one's installed, 16GB is forever full - do not buy the 16GB version!

I am a bit of a phone freak, I tend to change mine every 6 months... I have owned most Galaxy SX since the S2, a whole host of other Android, Windows and Apple based phones.

Currently on a Iphone 6S having recently swapped from my Galaxy S6. My main point here is I not really in any camp either Apple or Android...

I had the 5S for a short spurt, my opinion is the screen is an odd shape, the battery is extremely poor and the phone is what I would class as "average". This was my experience 2 years ago when it was brand new, now we are 2 years on and technology has obviously advanced...

Even at a reduced price your money would be better spent on a current gen Android handset, there are a range of different sizes from around 4" to the larger 5" handsets. The LG G4 has been mentioned multiple times in this post, also Oneplus have just released the Onyx. If you are intent on sticking with Apple put the money towards the *much* better 6 or 6S you will simply not regret it.

Hope this at least helps a few people

Deal will go hot, simply because it is hot.

Just my opinion but it seems some people have moved away from the way HUKD used to be, where the voting was deterministic, basically the best price to get a certain product is hot. It seems to be changing now to a subjective personal preference system where people vote cold because they feel something is too expensive. It's become far less useful now because of this, but thankfully those messing it up are still in the minority and the best price usually wins through in the end. As is the case here.

Oh, and those dog-in-the-manger voters, don't get me started about them.

I think something that puts this into perspective is the fact you can buy an iPod Touch 6th Gen for £150 with an iPhone 5S (£300) screen and iPhone 6 (£450) internals when the main difference between the iPod and iPhone is a better camera and cell service, which would equal a roughly £20 increase in manufacturing costs. Apple overcharge a phenomenal amount for their phones.

I've never cooked a beef Wellington, so I can't have an opinion if it tastes nice.

I've never programmed a video game, so I can't have an opinion if Fallout 4 is a good game...and so on.

I don't have to post deals to know what a good deal is you spanner. And the rrp isn't always indicative of a good deal on this site, evidenced by the fact that he community very rarely give heat to Apple deals.

This is poor logic. What if the community thinks the rrp is too high?

Using that logic PS4s could have a £1000 rrp and a deal for a £900 should be hot.

Rrp is a bad measure of a deal and always has been. First you must understand the value of money; £300 for an aging smart phone is a bad deal.

At around £600, the new model is double the price and not everyone can afford the latest models.

This is a decent price as far as it goes, but I'm not fond of apple. I own an Ipad, but to be honest, I much prefer my Android device, and it has the added benefit of removable SD storage. I have also found that as Apple update their operating system, it gets more confusing to use, unlike it used to be.

This is hot for the price though

I personally can't wait to change my phone and even possibly move off Android! My last iPhone was a 3GS and I wanted something with a larger screen so moved to an Xperia. The phone started getting too slow so I moved to the flagship phone of the time - the S4. Had enough of it throwing errors up when I plug my headphones in (recommended apps has crashed) and the becoming possessed when I receive a message and the keyboard becomes non responsive. I've also got an S4 mini for work so won't be leaving Android completely, but that is just too small.

Yes I could flash it, install a custom firmware and purchase 5 batteries (that's what all the other Android commentators ever go on about right?) but I want a phone that works. I did all of those things years ago in the XDA \ Smartphone days (when XDA developers was pre Android!)

I couldn't care less that I can buy an Android phone that has much better specs (every phone that is ever released is already years out of date due to R&D).....if the OS and bloatware is still buggy then it doesn't matter. Coincidently a workmate has the Sony Z1 and said his phone does the same with messages, so it must be an Android OS thing.

If you have a personal preference, good for you, but don't vote down a deal as it is something that you don't like? That applies for the LG fan boys voting down Samsung deals and vice versa.

Love what you have? Found a great deal on it? Post it. Don't like something else then move along. The comments on these posts are equivalent to someone walking into a shop and shouting at the staff that they aren't going to buy the item on offer as they have a better one at home.

Always amuses me how supposedly grown adult Android users feel the need to name call those who prefer Apple users, calling them idiots etc, yet the supposed idiots just live and let live. It's the same with virtually every such thread and discussion. I'm not sure whether those who spend their time comparing specs, feeling the need for the latest gadgetry and getting angry about Apple users are of a type of character and many Apple users are more relaxed about it all?

Just to add per my previous post, there are different types of Apple user. I confess to finding those who must have the latest phone when it comes out like lemmings, but that goes for all such people.

I do feel as someone who gets all the benefits of a smart phone that I need, without the cost and without the inner desire to compare specs or get the latest phone all the time, quite content.

Chill out and let people spend their money how they want and have the phones they like. As I said, it's not all about spec.

I like the iPhone and have an Android work phone and don't like it. It's just because I'm used to the iPhone and like the iOS. Those who like Android that's fine and good. But defining "better" isn't all about statistics. As for a camera, I've yet to find a phone camera that can match a decent digital camera with a decent resolution and optical zoom. Most take a snapshot well enough though.

Anyway... What I do is buy the last but one model off eBay for £80 - £100 and sell my last but two one for around £50 each year. So I'm always a step or two behind the latest model but I don't really care. It does me and it's then a lot of phone for £4-5 a month real cost to me.

31 Oct 15 2 #43
In any of these considerations you need to include the initial cost which would be 600£ for the iphone vs 300£ for the LG G4 (we are talking about deal prices rather than rrp's)

So an iPhone lost almost 75% of its value while the LG lost about 50% (admittedly iPhone had a longer period but it is unlikely either of the phone will lose a lot of value further.

You can also consider that you lost 440£ on an iPhone and lost 140£ on the value of an LG G4.

All that besides the G4 is a massively better phone, it is 2 years newer flagship and as would be expected beats this iphone in virtually every spec there is. Apart from being a completely different form factor (4.2" screen vs 5.5").

All in all if you are tied up in the Apple ecosystem and want a smaller phone, go for it but I would wholeheartedly recommend moving to Android, (I went from iPhone 4s to Nexus 5 and it was one of the best tech moves I ever did in my life).

All this results in my cold vote.

Droid comment isn't a cop out, £80 saving over Apple rrp from a proper seller is a good deal whether you like it or not. Was never expecting this to go hot as I said, helping others, as no point putting an apple deal on here :disappointed:

Having been looking for weeks on eBay UK phones are not going for £260 they are going much higher and at least with giffgaff you know the phone is a uk spec phone. eBay is becoming difficult to trust sellers, they call phones they are remaking, manufacture refurb phones or selling new other as phones with recycled parts. Bought phones from eBay in the past but from a "reliable" seller last week got a recycled parts phone which the scammer had put an iPad mini serial number against it. One other watch out is not all eBay sellers tell you they offer Apple warranty but in effect its warranty off them, not really the same thing.
