Would make a great xmas gift for me dad as it looks like it uses the O2 4G band. Looking for a sub £50 phone for him and it will be his first smart phone, was thinking of the Lumia 635 but he likes his betting and it is a bit sparse on some fo the apps I think he would use so a decent 4G Android at under £50 would suit him perfectly.

Unless someone can see any reason why not to get this?

review

Conclusion
Doogee X5 Pro is a smart phone which has suddenly appeared on the market and attracted a lot of attention with its surreal hardware for a good price. Its IPS display with wide visibility angles and quality rendition will allow undisturbed use in all conditions, while its work speed will satisfy all less and moderately demanding users. If you want an affordable smartphone and you can look past a few smaller cons, there is no reason to be apprehensive – you should definitely take the X5 Pro model into consideration as best buy in the lower price range!

Pros:
Good quality display
Fast response
4G LTE support
Powerful speaker

Cons:
No notification LED
Capacitive buttons unlit
No gyroscope and g-sensor

My wife's a pretty light phone user, bit of internet and some non-intensive games (solitaire etc). Currently has my old Nexus 4 but battery is going a bit these days. Would this be a reasonable replacement in terms of decent 3g n wifi connection etc? Obviously not going to play graphic intensive games but that's not her bag. Cheers

Should I tick the drop shipping order box ? anybody Thanks
SampleX to 22tanya
5 Nov 15 1 #30
No. Generally speaking, drop shipping is where you act as a retailer, sell the product yourself, and to supply it, you order it on the company website using whatever discount you negotiated and ask them to 'drop ship' it for you, which is where they send it out for you in plain packaging with no logo or address on the invoice except whatever you specify and/or agree with them as part of your 'account' beforehand.

I had an older Doogee phone - Doogee DG300 , which was good ,solid, well built.
It struggled as a GPS unit at times , lagged badly with some games, but was 100% reliable....
...until I had to do a factory reset on it - which basically crippled the phone for some reason , it was under 6 months old.
Heres the pinch - Doogees after sales support was non-existent at that time ( nearly 2 years ago now ) and as a chinese brand they basically failed to recognise their own warranty...I gave up chasing them to fix my phone. Beware using 'drop-shippers' on the tech/gadget sites based in far east also , as the manufacturers will state that the drop-shipper has to honour the warranty and not them as the manufacturer , strange , but in my experience - true.

Well I've just took the plunge. Clicking the link on Quidco bought up the store with UK shipping for the X5 Pro. After the code, cost £49.71 with an expected 6% back from Quidco BUT........

after ordering it I installed the app and got a 10% discount code (I think, it was a weird message!) so if yo do decide, install the app FIRST and see if that helps.

EDIT Looks like the 10% is for apparel, so maybe not :stuck_out_tongue:

I figured for 50 quid, it'll do until my contract is up. Now off to eBay for a screen....

I have the X5 (non-pro) version already, same as this but 3G only and 1GB/8GB. It's a quad core A7, not A53 (A53 is essentially the ARMv8 brother of the ARMv7 A7)

It has the same camera, design, speaker, display, battery etc. I reviewed it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/chinaphones/comments/3odwqs/review_doogee_x5/

Xiaomi is a major, major player in China. They have worked hard to make their name synonymous with decent gadgets in order to become kind of like the Chinese domestic 'Apple.' They're a large volume manufacturer with a dizzying array of products following in a very typical chinese style of using sizeable runs of available components or run-on's from other manufacturing lines to produce frequently updated 'series' of smartphones which depend very heavily on pre-sales to fund the manufacturing run and carry the 'overrun' of the product to strong residual sales on the back of good reviews and very competitive pricing. They don't like to sit on stock for long, which is why the 'ChinaPhone' sites often have very aggressive price points on Xiaomi gear, and why product lines get refreshed frequently.

Xiaomi is not a budget manufacturer, per se, but like many China phone brands does incorporate budget lines into their general offerings, and as I understand it the Redmi Note 2 is a budget line offering from Xiaomi.

In practical terms that means that it will be a good, solid, reliable, well made phone. Like many chinese brands, Xiaomi use their own skinned variant of Android, MiUi, which has been described as extremely iOS-esque. One point to note is that typical of all Chinese brands where US/Europe is not a primary market, the shelf life of an OS/Firmware release is generally the same as the product line. In short, you may find that the manufacturer makes the ROM to run your device, and doesn't make another one until there's a new, updated, revised device to put the new, updated, revised ROM on. You may get an interim update if you're lucky. As with most Android smartphones, there's an active third party developer community tweaking them for rooted/custom installs.

Because of the hierarchy of models offered by Xiaomi and the scale and popularity of their brand, you might note that Xiaomi, like Apple, are not considered a 'bang for your buck' brand. They definitely reserve high end offerings for their high end range, and hold back on features, capacity or performance for the lower range price bands. Nonetheless, their phones are held up in high esteem as being fashionable, eminently usable, well built and reliable.

If you're looking for 'value for money', you might want to check out the offerings from Elephone. There are some stunning deals around at the moment for their P8000 model, which is quite a bit of kit for the money (circa £100). There's also the upcoming M2 which is currently pre selling, and I'm currently busy checking out the Bluboo X Touch, which appears to offer everything the Elephones do, but with Gorilla Glass to boot. Between all these, there are some really interesting options between £100 and £130.

I don't favour any particular retailer, each have their pros and cons, and as reported in almost every thread about buying Chinese tech direct, the process from ordering to delivery is not science, less art, more like voodoo. But the results can be very rewarding, giving you a lot of machine for not a lot of cash.

I've just grabbed one of these Doogee X5 Pro's for my fiancé's mother in Eastern Europe, having previously (and very successfully) had a Cubot P9 for her aunt. I've supplied at least six Lenovo A820's to customers and friends. The Ainol MiniPC is an astonishing bit of kit, soon to be joined by a Voyo V2 and a Tronsmart X5, not to mention a whole load of active 3D glasses, both DLP-Link and Bluetooth courtesy of the Voyad brands.

I was terrified of 'Chinese tech' at first, but when you realise that much of what you buy from the 'brands' is made by these exact same manufacturers and either rebadged or built into different chassis, and these guys are bold enough to actually make what people can afford to buy casually, instead of making tech a ridiculously expensive hobby.

Got mine today, the white one. Same as others, box slightly damaged and not sealed, no screen protector and light finger marks but no actual damage to the phone. Only an EU charger. I'm thinking that it's a return as the tape had not been removed from the battery so maybe someone thought they had a dud?

Anyway, not used it long but it seems OK. Connected to wifi OK, not connected to 3G yet but not had chance to look at this. Got connected to emails & internet fine, Play Store installed out of the box. Not sure I like the launcher, may install an alternative later. Case is a bit plasticky, back came off a little too easily, but for the money what do you expect. Oh, there was an update ready straightaway, have downloaded and installed no problem.

'Non uk' charger which would work fine with an adapter but who needs another 1A USB charger anyway? Just make sure you remove the tape on the battery or you'll think it's dead! My main phone is a HTC One M8 and this is every bit as fast. Build quality feels a little low of course but what do you expect for the money? Some amusing Engrish on some of the dialog boxes. Battery has gone down 3% in 4 hours. Not bad for a phone that costs the same as 3 months of payments on a 24 month HTC contract!

Hi guys, thought I would add my thoughts to the thread...

I ordered the phone last Thursday, received confirmation via email on Friday as to the phone had been dispatched, and received the phone via royal mail on Monday, no signature was required. As for the service from banggood I can't fault it at all on this occasion.

The packaging was unsealed but it was a original box with the hologram, the phone was brand new, had a screen protector preinstalled.

Before charging I had to take off a bit of tape covering the battery and it quickly charged to 100%. I turned the phone on and immediately performed a update. I checked once more and a second update was available that I installed too.

After putting my Three sim in the phone it recognised it straight away and have been using it for a week without any problems. To confirm, I do receive a 4G connection and I am based in the east midlands.

The only apps the phone came installed with were to types of keyboards that I immediately uninstalled and a editing suite called 'documents to go' that I have disabled. Otherwise you get a pretty vanilla setup of android.

For just under £50 I can not complain at all. The phone is very quick and does everything I need without any lag. I have probably 15-20 apps installed and all run flawlessly. I have put in a 64GB micro SD card into it and it has recognised it. Very pleased with this as it was advertised as only being able to read a 32GB card. You are able to pretty much all apps from the internal memory to the SD card. Once again very pleased with this. I hardly notice any lag at all either. Some games I've bought recently from play store, such as N4S most wanted, Colin McCray rally, hitman sniper, monopoly, all run perfectly, without lag, and fire up quickly. I find the screen responsive enough to enjoy them even with the screen protector on.

The camera isn't great but I'm not in photography at all so not a issue for me. But one can't complain to this point as for what would you expect from a £50 phone.

Couple of points, after transferring the apps storage to the SD card, if the phone is rebooted, those apps that I have placed on any of the home screens as shortcuts disappear and have to be put back again but the apps on the internal memory remain in there place.

The second issue I am having is from the app WhatsApp. It runs and works fine but if I close the app totally I receive no notifications what's so ever. This was not the case with my previous handsets. I've checked all the settings in the phone and within WhatsApp but no luck so far. The way around is to open WhatsApp and then minimise it using the hone screen button so it remains in the list of last open apps. Id like to hear from any one else who is having this problem.

But overall I am highly pleased with the phone. This is my second Chinese handset within the last 2-3 months, the other being the elephone p8000, and I can honestly so that I think I won't be buying from anywhere else again. You can't beat the value for money factor and as time passers these manufacturers will only get better with not only their product but their service too.

PS. Read some place that this handset may be getting marshmallow...fingers crossed!

Thanks for the update, but can you test the GPS is working.

Turn off Data, and turn off Wifi.

Only turn on the GPS.

You getting a back hander ftom Doogee? lol
Seems strange you getting 4g as I'm in what Three call a super strong area and like the others I'm only getting 3g on this phone but 4g on other phones we have no problem.
As soon as the case we've ordered comes we will remove the cellophane from the screen as I'm pretty sure it's not a screen protector for use with the phone. It's just the usual plastic to protect the phone in transit. Glad you are pleased with it its always nice to get a bargain, I just wish there was a usable warranty as I doubt they will be very helpful if there are any issues with the phone. It's a risk you take with these phones I guess.

Stuff from China normally takes anything from 14-30 days.
Have you fixed this yet? Did you reboot it?

Any help appreciated, not tech savvy. I cannot get the phone to ring when call come in. It vibrates only. It did ring at initial setup but low volume. Done all updates and few jiggling to setup but cannot get back even the quiet ringing. Please n thanks all

I received the phone but still waiting for the case and screen protector, I guess it will take a while seeing the case is coming from China.

Hi all, your all welcome and appreciate the thanks given.

Da11as, before leaving work today I turned off the WiFi and my data connection so I had no way of getting online. I went into the location setting, turned it on and chose the GPS only option. I then fired up Google maps and within 5 seconds or so it accurately pin pointed my location.

I then drove home, around 20 miles, and still with no WiFi or data connection turned on google maps and again within a few seconds the icon on screen moved to this location of my home.

So that's a yes to GPS working then (I'm not too good with this kind of stuff). Hope this helps.

Mine's stopped syncing gmail since the second update... Any ideas?

14 Nov 15 1 #263
4G seems to work, tried it on a separate SIM card (3 network), but note I had to manually choose the 4G from network operators. Tried it with speedtest.net app and it gave me over 20meg on download compared with around 6meg on the 3G. I don't know how stable it is to manually choose the network, but the speed seemed to correlate.
lianne21
14 Nov 15 #264
Hi. I manually selected Three 4g from network ops too but it still says 3g beside my phone signal.
Did the 3g beside your signal at top right of phone actually change to say 4g when you selected it?
lianne21
14 Nov 15 #265
It turns sync off after 2nd update. You have to manually turn it back on. Hope this helps.

Quick update, this screen is awful to play 1st person shooters. Still good overall though, gladly I don't play many games.
beanpatel
14 Nov 15 #267
Yes it did, I was surprised after reading what experiences the other guys had. Please note I disabled the sim in the first slot, which was a T-Mobile sim which is 3G only anyway, in the second slot I had the 3 network sim which is 4G enabled, I restarted the phone and it seemed to work. I disabled the first sim to ensure my speed test was with the 3 network sim
lianne21
14 Nov 15 #268
Thanks for reply. Just tried disabling my other sim and restarting phone to see if that would help but still only 3g here :disappointed:
Glad at least someone is getting 4g anyway!

Having this problem too, very annoying.

Is this happening to everyone here??

Anyone found a fix for this?

I don't know if this will help but you could try disabling 'Vibrate on touch'. You can find the setting in Sounds and Notification / General / Settings (Cog).

just been told that there will be another 10 days delay in restocking so I have asked for a refund.
lianne21
17 Nov 15 #273
Any reason as its defintely worth waiting for?
ibblackberry1
17 Nov 15 #274
None really, just hate paying for something and waiting 30 days or so. Was considering the coda ultra 6 for a bit more. I will see what they say when the email back, just hate feeling strung along.

By all accounts does seem a decent phone though
zermattbusby
18 Nov 15 #275
Oh great! How did you find out, did you email them asking for an update?
I ordered on the 7th Nov (in-stock) then was informed on the 10th OOS wait ~ 10 days (due in ~ 20th)
ibblackberry1
18 Nov 15 2 #276
Yeah I emailed them ages ago when this deal was first posted and went oos and they said ten days, then I emailed a couple of days ago and they said another ten days for restocking. So it doesn't sound like they know for sure.Im impatient so add on another 7 days for tracked delivery and sounds like mid December at the earliest. Although customer services was prompt in emailing me back and had very good English cannot fault them, good communication.

I have just went for a refund. I will look at the Ultra 6 or the X5 pro is also on amazon with Prime next day delivery, but at a higher price of £69. I will have a look about.

19 Nov 15 #281
Just wanted to report that my oh is in Newcastle atm and now has 4g on the Three sim.
So it seems it must be too weak a signal for it in Glasgow and the phone is in fact working fine on 4g.

19 Nov 15 #282
Well, I've waited 2 days for a reply from their c/s. The adviceis to get my phone repaired and they'll pay the bill. No further elaboration apart from sorry for the problem. Did ask for the returns info in my initial contact email, but they've ignored this. Will again request a full refund & details to return the faulty mobile, as i cannot get a ringing tone to notify me that my phone is ringing. Shame, as otherwise I was happy with the product if it diddn't have this issue.
ibblackberry1
20 Nov 15 #283
Go my refund through due to stocking delays (I requested) customer services were fast responding, and there was no issue with the refund or the speed of the refund
lianne21
20 Nov 15 #284
That such a shame. I'm pretty sure this is some setting that's not right somewhere. Have you asked someone, a mate maybe that's good with this sort of thing, to have a go at fixing it? Sometimes we are ignoring the obvious and need someone else to look?

Have you manually selected your network? Maybe it's not recognizing the signal because it's on a wrong setting? How about trying the doogee forum or maybe xda developers could help?

Have you tried a factory reset?
pwel
20 Nov 15 #285
Using it for a month now, still very happy, the only bug I found is in Skyscanner app,the touchscreen not responding, have to pull the battery to reboot. Battery life is not a strong point either, but you cant say its bad. Otherwise everything is nice and smooth feels a lot faster than the 20k on antutu. Id buy Doogee again without second thought.

Hi Lianne21, many thanks for your suggestions. I took the phone to carphone warehouse & FoneGiant? neither could help FG refused to even look at it due to the brand? CPW said the speaker wasn't working & parts might be an issue. However, I will try the manual setting & forum. Do you have to be a member of these to get help? Thanks again. Agreed shame about issue as I do like the phone.

Thanks for your email, we are so sorry for the stock delay again.

The restock will be delayed some times again.

Could you please wait for the order again or cancel the order then refund?

Sorry for all of inconvenience and your highly understanding will be the most appreciated.
