I only spotted this one today, after an email from eBuyer. :disappointed:
I've been looking at Brother lasers as a high percentage of their user reviews don't hate them! Anyone know how this compares with the Brother HL-3140cw currently on offer? Obviously this one works out cheaper, it adds duplex, and a manual feed > 1 page.

Things in favour of the Brother series are:
It will print a black & white job EVEN if colour toners are empty.
A print job or defaults or the printer can be set to black & white to PRESERVE your colour toner.
Anyone know if either of the above features are on the Dell (there's nothing in the user manual)?

Phoned EBuyer at 9.10 this morning (0371 521 3300). Order was cancelled with no fuss and money is being refunded. Much as I understand the bad rap EBuyer get sometimes, on this occasion they have been superb!

Hope it work out for you with ebuyer. They are not particularly good with customer services.

You may end up need to pay for return postage which could be a lot consider how heavy the printer is.

Which is why I used the word donut. Nonetheless the description says multifunction which it is not..
Bigbaldgit
18 Nov 15 #51
This does not have a scanner built in despite EBuyer's web-page describing it as a "multifunction" (around half way down the page). I fell for it and now need to look at cancelling/returning as I need the scanner function. I'm a donut I know but its incorrectly described.

I think the photo of this thread is quick clear that it does not have scan function.

eBuyers are cheeky about the delivery pricing - they used parcelforce 24 for my 5 days free postage - but waited 3 days first before posting; had they posted the next day - it would be the same carrier (same cost) - but they charge £20+ extra for that.
pibpob to Quicklite

It's not as simple as that. They have agreements with the parcel companies to use spare capacity so it probably cost them a lot less than what you'd pay.

Bought - checked out via Quidco.:sunglasses:

Looking at the Dell Cashback form:
https://www.dellprinteroffers.com/offer/CASHBACK/gb/en
"You are required to submit your claim form no sooner than 30 days but no later than 60 days after your purchase date on your receipt/invoice"

So I guess setting an alarm on my phone for 30 days from now?

I know HP MFP M476dn has duplex scan and everything else on my list, HP was doing £80-100 cashback last month, which work out less than £200.

But a set of compatible cartridge cost £75 which is rather expensive. That is what put me off from buying it.

I will need colour.

My current laser is mono. There is no point to replace with another mono.

Good point, just looking at your one again brother , seems pretty good, let me know if you find anything better with cheaper toner prices.

Edit: This HP laserjet pro 400 seems pretty good for the price:
http://www.ebuyer.com/362443-hp-laserjet-pro-400-m425dn-multi-function-mono-laser-printer-cf286a-b19
It has duplex scanning which I think the brother one you mention doesn't. Also the toner prices seem very good. What do you think?

Hi, have you considered having two machines?
I've had a look as your needs are similar to mine, but some of the extra features, especially duplex scan, don't come cheap on a colour laser printer.
If you could live with two machines, then a multifunction inkjet could do your scanning needs (the Canon MX925 I know has duplex scanning and available for around £90. There may be cheaper comparable items but this comes to mind first as I own one myself).
And then get a cheap to run colour laser, such as this one, for your printing needs.

Of course, if laser wasn't essential to you, then the Canon inkjet I mentioned or something similar, should meet everything else for a reasonable purchase price with cheap compatibles.

Hope this helps.
huangxq2 to amarmp
10 Nov 15 #41
Laser is essential to me. I dislike inkjet for its high running cost, slow printing, ink dry out even not using, and block nozzle if not used frequent enough.

I had quite few inkjet replaced this year. I could use their scan function wireless, and buy a colour laser, such as, Dell 1760, small and compact.

But I hate the idea of two printers and I do not have enough space in my study room for two, which means the scanner need to be placed in a different room.

If I have to put up with two, I would rather go for Brother 9020CDW.
huangxq2
10 Nov 15 #40
Have seen that too, the problem with it is the running costs.

It does not have good cheaper compatible cartridge available.

Doing some research last night, came across this:
HP MFP M277dw LaserJet Pro Color Printer Amazon £196
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-M277dw-LaserJet-Color-Printer/dp/B00TON9V2C/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1447111529&sr=1-1
ok not as cheap, but the device itself, anyone have any views if this is a decent printer spec wise (doesn't have a duplex scanning but can live with that) - hopefully going into black friday it might get reduced? I don't know much about printers, just after a good spec printer.
swiftguy

I'm also looking for something similar, duplex colour laser and scan (pref. duplex scan)

9 Nov 15 #36
I need a laser printer, colour, duplex, scan, duplex scan, wifi or network, with good cheap compatible cartridges available.

I only found Brother 9020CDW.

There are many printers matches requirements, but they do not have good cheap compatible cartridges available.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Erm yes. You're telling the person who knows. The point being check out the other models included in Dell's cashback if this one doesn't tickle your fancy. https://www.dellprinteroffers.com/offer/CASHBACK/gb/en

Thanks for posting this!

I used to have a prior model and it was an excellent printer with generous starting toner, duplexing and good print quality. The only downside is that it's a little big and clunky looking but the uniform black isn't too bad.

Good deal, I bought one.

Thanks again.
Cheers.

Also for the record most laser printers can be convinced to print with empty toner carts (either via firmware or a chip on the toner cartridge). I don't know of any laser printer that you will damage trying to print with empty toners (unlike inkjets that can get air locked), don't know why you'd want to, but it can be done...
Usually laser printers will continue to print long after the duty cycle has been exceeded, however print quality will start to deteriorate (I've managed to convince my CL2100 to printe a few 100 pages more after it reported the toner bottle was full, sadly it needs a new PDU, but it's fine for the kids rough work)
aLV426
9 Nov 15 #29
I appreciate this is HotUKDeals, however that sweeping statement is just not true. I have 3 printers currently running that all support "full bleed", Ricoh CL2100, KMMagicolor 330, Konica 7300, don't take my word for it - visit the manufacturers site and request a sample of edge to edge print....
Any of the Sharp mx range support it as well, however it's much cheaper to print to oversize stock and trim down, the scale of the home user this is fine, however when you have large volumes it's not as efficient.
My old Phaser could do it, it used solid ink, however it's technically a laser printer...

9 Nov 15 #24
Does indeed look like a massive printer almost half a meter each way
Anyone know if things like Drums or Maintenance kits are needed for this model, or is it just replacement toners?

Speaking of toners, can you get away with changing one, or will the whole set be required when one is low?
Lastly, does the printer carry on printing if one toner colour is low?
wdh to Sharpharp
9 Nov 15 1 #28
Last of those points first - the four toners are independent, it is NOT like an inkjet with three colours in the one cartridge!

This is a serious office printer, dating from a few years ago.
I downloaded the manual (300 pages, so just skimmed them!) from Dell Support.
The manual expects you to be running Win7 which indicates its vintage.

Its big. Its fast and it prints both sides of the paper ...
... but it is awful complicated.
The 1760 is simple and relatively dumb.
This thing has half a gig of RAM and runs a clone of PostScript. It has a duty cycle capability of 50k pages per month ... It is a VERY different beast.

While the ebuyer ad says a (singular) drum needs replacement after 55000 pages, the manual shows how to change the set of four individual drums.

Other consumables it shows include a waste toner container, a couple of transfer belts, the fuser unit, etc ...
The manual I downloaded doesn't give estimated life of any consumables.

For £70 it is a bargain, but the price is because it certainly isn't for everybody. I'm tempted by the duplex and the proper paper tray (I like my 1760 otherwise), but I'm not sure I can be bothered with all the complexity (which even impacts on clearing paper jams).

Drum needs replacing after 55,000 pages (@ £110), or there may well be a cheat out there to reset it. TBH I`m sure another printer deal will be along before it needs changing...
My previous Dell printer (in fact every printer I ever had) was happy just to replace whatever toner was empty.
The printer would stop when out of any one toner.

I've got the C1760NW and very happy with it but I'd have to give it to this model for the ppm, duplex and proper paper tray.

got the previous model and had it for several years now. Now, the positives for me were that it was the same price and included a full set of oem ink cartridges. I bought 2 full set of replacement inks from ebay as the oem ones were only a starter set. I still have some spare cartridges left and i've printed 1000's of a4 sheets full colour. print quality depends on the paper used. generally if you use higher grain paper then the results will be great. the downside is that using very cheap flimsy paper will defo result in a paper jam. i had no issues setting the printer including using the network ip to connect to the printer and view its performance and to clear out printer queue cache. if this had built-in wifi then it would be nigh on perfect especially if the reliability of the older models was still ingrained in the build quality. a word of caution though, the older model was far larger than it looked in the picture; very bully indeed. this model looks a little more compact but not by much.

Good deal - Heated
Just wifi missing but a lot of people have their printer within reach of the router.

Does this take cheap 3rd party toner like the C1760NW?

Edit: ugh - cheapest I can find on eBay is £44 for the complete set... a long way off the £15-20 you can get 4x C1760 toners for...
Maybe not the best choice then when you factor running costs in...
