I think the main issue people likely have with this printer is using at home and comparing to an inkjet.

This is an Office printer, And works fine for me to print out invoices ect. If you are wanting something for pictures an inkjet is the only way to go really.

No, Not so much a hardship, But if She was buying new, She would rather have it than not, A few times she has put it back in the wrong way round or up the wrong way, Or dropped some pages and had to sort out before reloading, easily done when she prints off 50 odd pages in one go, And had a few jams after reloading because the corners get bent and out of shape on the first pass.

So yes, Get Duplex if you can.

Looks the same as the old 1250c minus the wifi which I am still using, But does this have the problem of coming out of sleep that the 1250c had, And in my case, Still has.

Got one like many others when it was on offer, printed over 8,500 pages and used a few toners (cheap ones from Amazon) and have had no issues at all with it. Missus hates technology but loves it as she prints the most.

If you intend on selling your artwork, you'll need to get it professionally printed.

Is that really such a hardship? I use duplex all the time on my one and it's just a case of taking paper out of the output tray and loading it straight into the input tray again, takes about 2 secs?

With this kind of printer keeping it simple is key - adding auto duplex just increases cost and chances are it would be the first thing to break.

Good price. I managed to pick up a Kyocera colour laser print/scan/copy/fax for just over £100 (back upto £400 now) from Amazon, but the refills do seem to be more than this Dell. Only needed it for printing too. Would have ordered this instead.

According to an Ebuyer mailshot the other day, the Dell E525w is the new version of the C1765nfw, which I think was the multifunction version of this printer. They were selling it for £178.24, but its back to £208.20 now (it's ebuyer though, so it might go back to the lower price occasionally in another mailing)

My wife just started a two year course, And what with printing off assignments to read and all the other stuff, she had gone through a ream and a half of paper within three weeks, Yes, Most definitely worth it over a inkjet, But I would get one with Duplex, A lot of the stuff she prints is to read so prints to both sides, But has to turn the paper over as our 1250c is not Duplex.

28 Oct 15 #86
Got one of these from Ebuyer and for the money it's a brilliant machine. The toners are pretty cheap from ebay and simple to replace. As a home colour printer you can't go wrong, but remember this is not a photo printer - it will print photos but not to the detail that an inkjet can and not on photo paper.

28 Oct 15 #47
I bought one from Ebuyer last time they were on offer. When it arrived it was faulty. Dell managed a replacement and their policy states that they can (will) replace with a reconditioned printer. So I ended up with a reconditioned printer. Not had a problem since and it's a cracking printer.

Assuming you mean laser photo paper, then the key is 600x600dpi here - it's not bad at all, but if you want to print photos at A4 size, then you might prefer something with a higher dpi - at 7x5 and 6x4 though, this is a very capable printer.
HDUKBargainHunter to Dave_dave69

I printed some pictures and they did not look that great, However I then laminated them as it was for my daughter to take to school and they looked superb!
Obviously it is never going to match a decent inkjet, But if you laminate the pictures they do look good as it gives it the glossy finish.

Good printers, use them at work. One stopped working after about 9 months heavy use but Dell replaced the next day with a refurbished one that was as good as new. Btw doesn't work with normal photo paper but photos look fine printed on normal paper.
lovelybeer
28 Oct 15 #75
Oh, absolutely! These laser printers are ideal for presentations, documents with some images on etc...I guess if you are remotely professional and need brochures etc, you'd be wise enough to not try it at home and have a dedicated printer do it with the proper tools/PSD files etc etc...

Still - A4 photos printed don't look terrible. You wouldn't put them on your wall at home or anything like that, but I've seen worse from cheap inkjets on the same inexpensive paper (due to bleed).

Going around in a big circle, these are fantastic value for money

Only cost £95 from eBuyer almost two years ago! The spare toner I bought then still hasn't been opened, but I don't print much at home.
It's a bit temperamental when connected via a network cable, but I've had no problems since switching to wi-fi.
The only disappointment for me was that loaded paper sticks out the front of the printer to gather dust. This is not shown in any of the product photos, which is quite misleading.
Works fine with Windows 10 too.

On the 1765nfw the tray on the upper paper feed pulls out to cover the main paper tray. Nice printer, passable for some uses of photo printing but its been cheaper to have them printed professionally for a long time than with domestic printers so not really a problem.

You'll generally pay well over £500 for a (real) 1200x1200 colour laser. Some manufacturers also consider colour depth to be a part of resolution and make claims based on that. Eg: My Samsung claims to be 2400x600, but in reality it's a 600x600 printer that can render 4 different shades per dot (2-bit colour). So they claim 2400 horizontal dpi for no real reason other than it looks good. Dell claims an "image quality" of 1200dpi for this printer, so it's probably similar but I give them an extra point for not claiming the real resolution is any higher than 600x600.

Generally, I just print photos at Costco. Or Boots, in a pinch. I can't stand ink jet printers and the only thing they're good at it photo prints.

Superb printer, I will never go back to inkjet (always clogging and running out of ink). I bought this in previous deal in Aug 2014 and I'm still using the original toner! Works great via wifi, although a bit fiddly to initially setup. I probably print out an average of 10 A4 sheets a week.

27 Oct 15 1 #12
Does that have the three year warranty? I think it is only 1 year from Ebuyer.

Dabs is selling these with the three year warranty for £20 more. I think it is worth paying the extra if you print a lot. I've just had one fail after two years.

You'd be mad to use this printer with anything other than compatible cartridges from Ebay or Amazon. A full set of Dell-branded toners costs twice as much as the printer. I pay £34 for two full sets of cartridges delivered from Ebay. That's £17 per set of four.

We're still using the original "freebie" toners that came with the printer. While the cost is more compared to a set of inkjet refills, toner will last a far longer time.

Instead of looking at actual cost, try looking (or working out) a cost per print. You'll find laser works out to be quite considerably cheaper in the longer term in most instances - more so, when you consider the quality and finish etc.
lovelybeer
28 Oct 15 #60
Someone has already explained, but you can get >1200dpi laser printers, which of course refers to the dpi of the print, not the file in question being sent to the printer.

28 Oct 15 #59
I have the model up from this and compatible toners work fine. There is even an option on the printer to say you are using non-Dell toners so the printer can adjust for it. Use ours every day for printing things for our eBay business.

It costs me £2-£3 for a full set of ink cartridges for my inkjet. It`s £22.95 for a full set for this printer.
How long would the laser printer toners last compared to my cartridges?
I am aware the speed and quality will be far better on a laser printer.

DPI is Dots Per Inch, not the max bitmap resolution. The later is determined by the amount of RAM.

I got this printer for my parents and confirm it is unsuitable for any kind of photo work - although fine for occasional embedded photos in business documents. The resolution is simply too low for anything you might want to frame or put in a photo album. The colours are also not as bright or accurate as you would expect from even a cheap inkjet.

Getting one with Airprint would have been worth the extra in retrospect. For the main use cases in the home; printing off boarding cards, emails etc, you will often want to use your phone/ipad and having to switch the PC on just creates an annoying extra step.

28 Oct 15 #48
I don't understand your comment: the maximum dpi (I assume it's 600 x 600) can't be changed whatever the size of the image.
This is the main disadvantage with colour laser printers: their resolution is too low for photographs
notavalidaddress
28 Oct 15 #46
I've got the AIO version of this - I don't print a lot which was the main reason I had to get away from inkjet technology and this is a great printer. Had it about 18 months and just replaced the supplied black cartridge with a 3rd party one and it's fine.

Cheap printer, cheap to run, doesn't clog up. Some may moan it doesn't have auto duplex but for this price point I don't think that is unreasonable. I do a lot of manual duplexing and the seconds it takes to move the paper back into the feeder tray to print on the other side doesn't annoy me. Plus it's one less thing that won't go wrong, a duplex unit on a printer this price would be more hassle than it's worth IMO. Even on top of the range HP Printers (the big floor standing enterprise ones) it's always the duplex that gives you the problems first.

I have the 1250c too (£39 from Tesco 3 years ago) - I'm still on the original toners and gone through 750 pages I guess with no sign of them running out yet.

I couldn't go back to my old plasticky HP inkjet. The Dell feels quality and looks the part (1760c appears identical in looks and presumably build quality)

I should say so.
Right now, my old Samsung B&W laser can be refilled with toner from a bottle.
A lot of the newer printers have chips so you have to buy a new cartridge.

Can this Dell be refilled from a bottle? With no chipping.

I think it's about time the EU made the whole printer cartridge scam illegal. Refillable cartridges should be mandatory and chipping them should be illegal.
We have legislation interfering on filament light bulbs, vacuum cleaner power output, shopping bags etc, so printer cartridges should be next in line for some environmental legislation.

Followed by replacement battery legislation, requiring manufacturers of cordless power tools to offer replacement batteries at a fair cost proportional to the original retail price of the tool. So we do not replace the whole tool because it is the same price as a battery.

I have this printer and its great. I got it from e-buyer on a deal and purchased an extended warranty. I have bought refill inks off ebay (3x colour, 2 black package) very reasonable prices with no issues. They are just toner hoppers, no built in rollers like the mono samsung (had trouble with those for print quality).
The only thing that isnt great is the wifi print app.
If this is what you mainly want for iOS, then get one with air print.....much easier.

I've had a bad experience from another vendor on Amazon so be careful - I got a refund but the refill mechanism was too tight on the cartridges so they wouldn't "refresh" and could have damaged the printer (horrible noises). But I've never had a problem with these.

Awesome little printer. Great quality output. A bit slow to first page print and clatters a little more than some other lasers.

One thing to note is that whilst you can print from an Android phone using the Dell Document Hub app (Dell Mobile Print replacement), the printer is not Google Cloud Print compatible, so printing from the Chromebook/box is not directly possible.

A way round this is to upload to Google Drive from the Chromebook and print via an Android phone.
