Just noticed this whilst browsing Rakuten, offers a lot of bang for the buck and has HDMI out I believe.

I don't need one but it seems a good deal.

Ordered through Flubit for £33.49. Worth a punt at that price, and probably only a fiver to send back if no good. Bearing in mind what it actually is, seems like a very good price and what reviews I've seen are positive in the great majority.

Got the protector today. Not sure I can recommend it really - in theory it should fit, but the steep curves of the tablet mean the edges are a problem and very slightly overlap by a few mm.

Apologies for the reflection - here's a picture:

Also it has a cut-out that might annoy some - but it does cover the screen completely.

After one or two hiccups, the upgrade was successful and everything including the camera works OK. Originally, I installed the updates for 8.1, then upgraded to 10, and found that the camera no longer worked. After doing a factory reset and not installing the 8.1 updates, 10 was installed without any problems. Getting 3 to 3.5 hours continuous video. Nothing like as good as the Lenovo Yoga 8 but typical for the product. Once a few things had been adjusted such as increasing the scaling to 150% and adjusting individual items such as menus, now working with it comfortably. You may need a magnifying glass to start off with. It certainly is a fast little machine even with the small size of RAM. It's amazing how far things have come since I had my first desktop machine in 1999 running Windows 95 with a luxuriously generous hard drive of 100 MB (yes, that unit is correct. MB).

The Windows 10 download appeared via Windows Update around 3 days later after reserving it.

I tried doing the quicker upgrade route from the Microsoft site a few days back - the tablet crashed (it actually had "static" on the display and I thought I'd killed it! I left it a while and it went into recovery mode, back to Windows 8 ).

This time around I didn't have to fix the screen rotation (kxaccel driver), which I had to with my Linx 10, months ago. Some might not agree, but I think Windows 10 is much better - "tablet mode" is rubbish though.

Quidco are giving 6%, and using code SUPER4 (may be for today only) could bring effective price down from £39.99 to £31.95, assuming that the Quidco cashback is based on actual price paid to Quidco rather than the headline price.

(Sorry, just realised you asked me twice! Oops).

Mentioned it earlier in the thread, though I edited the post later on:

Edit: HP Stream 7 looks similar, but can only find plastic film protectors (9.9 x 192.7 x 110.7mm).

Closest I can find so far http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311475146559 Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10 (189 x 105 x 9.3mm)*

*I bought one, I'll update when it appears

Bit of a gamble on my part, it won't be a perfect fit but I couldn't find HP Stream 7 tempered glass protectors anywhere, unless anyone knows better. Hoping the Lenovo Tab 2 A7-10 will do. It's coming from Shenzhen/HK so it will take a while.

Thanks for that confirmation about the volume. I was beginning to think I'd bought a lemon. I have a LeNovo Yoga 8 which delivers a lot more volume so a little disappointed in the Connect showing. Otherwise, a nice piece of kit I'll have a bit of fun with. Now, I'd better start looking. Oh, could you tell me where you ordered the screen protector from?
louiselouise
5 Nov 15 #99
Yeah, the speakers are pants. Try Bongiovi Acoustics DPS Audio Enhancer (program should work properly when you reboot). Gives the volume a bit of a boost.

If you know where to look (ahem) you can get the full version.

5 Nov 15 #98
Hi. Am I right in assuming that the volume levels are relatively low as this is what I'm finding with Youtube and iPlayer. My tablet arrived today (A Grade) and is in 1st Class condition. It came minus the Office 365 but that doesn't particularly bother me as I probably would not have used it anyway. Where did you get your screen protector from, by the way? Thanks.

Around two days, I think (it does say Royal Mail Tracked 48 on the ebay listing). I ordered Sunday night and it appeared on Wednesday morning.

Tried doing the Windows 10 upgrade via the Microsoft link/install tool but it crashed on the second boot, something to do with an error migrating data. As it's for my sister and I'm waiting on a tempered glass protector, I'll wait till Windows 10 appears on Windows Update. Didn't have any problems upgrading via Windows Update on my Linx.

This might be worth watching....unfortunately I had to pay Highlands postage but free elsewhere in the UK. You never know, might get relisted as one reappeared last night (which I bought).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221919548674

Edit: Also, as the speakers are a bit poor and need some oomph (applies to all the Linx tablets and this one), I used to use DFX Audio Enhancer with Windows 8.1 (Windows 10 seems to bring up errors for me) but now use Bongiovi Acoustics.

On WIn10 the automatic screen rotation didn't work,
found driver and a registry import file here - that fixed it
http://www.linxtablet.co.uk/page.php?p=windows-10-command-centre---g-sensor-accelerator

Tried a few drivers but didn't manage to sort out the issue with the mic on my unit (on both Win 8.1 and Win10 I just got static, probably that's why it got returned... and also because it got dropped, some damage to the case but not too bad)

Sems to work ok but charges incredibly slowly when it is switched on. In fact, battery is even decreasing when running at 50% brightness with the 2A charger plugged in. Seems to be a common issue with those.

Also: yep, no Office 365 - taht license had been used already

Thanks for the link. Ive downloaded the upgrade tool but its stuck on "Getting a few things ready" page for hours now... have restarted and still. Might just leave it on Windows 8 for a while, split screen is quite neat and easy to use. Or I might reset the whole tablet....

Oh and yes I got the same thing for MS Office, seems key has been used up.

My unit was as new, seemed just to be an open box unit.

Upgraded to Windows 10 (didn't use Windows update because downloading all the Windows 8.1 updates takes too long - switched off updates and ran the "media creation tool" which you can find on http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

It's a grade A but plastic on one of the corners doesn't click in anymore (slight gap, say half a mm) and there's some glue applied to the screen bezel. previous owner must have dropped it... Still only minor damage and this was cheap...

However, the in-built microphone doesn't work, tried Skype and recording audio etc. and there's just static with my faint voice on thebackground, impossible to hear what am saying.

Is microphone working on yours?

Mine works fine, now doing the Windows Updates and upgrade to 10. Screen bleeding seems a bit of an issue but can't really grumble as it was bought for pocket money.

I did get a bubble alert on the taskbar, saying "You may only have limited time to redeem this offer" with Office 365 (does that mean it's not been redeemed)? But when I clicked it, this came up....

If it's anything like the Linx refurbs (I posted a few threads about them from Electrical Deals and 3monkeys) http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/refurbished-linx-8-inch-tablet-windows-8-os-1gb-ram-32gb-storage-front-rear-camera-2201095 (this one is electrical-deals).

It can be hit and miss whether Office 365 is supplied (isn't there a cut-off date for activation anyway?). Boyf's had his, other customers found theirs had been redeemed.

Edit: Woops, silly me assumed this is the same retailer! The Connect 7 is from Cheapest Electrical, not electrical-deals. But all the refurb Linx tablets I posted about were similar (re the Office 365 licence).

Another Edit: Can anyone recommend a decent, and not too pricey, stylus for this? I know there's the foam-tipped ones from Poundland and the like, wondering if there's something a bit more precise for the 7-inch screen?

So even if you go the hassle of selling it and then 10% for fews it's not much different if you take the rakuten points into consideration. Also someone might not have the full 55 quid.

For anyone wondering if you can charge this AND power a USB device at the same time...I did this guide for the linx 7 a while back, a few people have now said this device is a rebranded Linx 7 so it should be the same method.

I have this cable:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271641277647?clk_rvr_id=826365108815&rmvSB=true

And I did this:

1) Plug 4 port cable into USB on tablet, with the switch set to data and keyboard plugged into one of the data ports.
2) Boot to BIOS - Hold DEL key as soon as you see the LINX logo.
3) Navigate to the Chipset menu using the arrow keys on your keyboard
4) Select the South Bridge option (it goes white when selected)
5) Press Enter
6) Select 'USB Configuration'
7) Press Enter
8 ) Select 'USB OTG Support'
9) Select PCI mode from the popup menu
10) Press Esc twice to get back to the main menu
11) Select "Save Changes and Exit"
12) Let the tablet boot into Windows, it didn't appear to be working once in Windows, so I shut down and restarted Windows and after loading back up I am now charging and able to use a USB device simultaneously!!!!!

I am able to unplug a USB device and re-connect it without issue while in Windows. Bear in mind it will only power one USB device and charge the tablet at the same time.

I bought this at £80 when it came out from Tesco, it died updating to Windows 10 but I'll admit it was a fantastic piece of kit, I managed to jailbreak iPhones, run Kodi, flash Samsung tabs with Odin, and adbfire. Granted, it took probably double the time it would take from a full laptop but it worked great. 31 Oct 15 #46
Agree. I have the Connect 7 and to be honest I wished I had gone for an 8 incher running Win 8.1 on it. It just seems a tad too small screen-wise to run 8.1 comfortably. However, upgraded to Win 10 and it's a different beast. Even at 7 inches the tab is much more usable now.
On the whole I'd say Android or iOS is more suited to tablets than Windows (even v10) if all you need a tablet for is to run a basic suite of apps including Netflix, iPlayer, catch-up TV and browse the web.
However, if you want to do 'proper computing stuff' including running a full version of MS Office, you cannot beat a Windows tablet. Having the full power of the OS in the palm of your hand is incredible.

Have a linx 7 and it's great. A little small and fiddly but Window 10 works really well. All 7inch tabets are a little fiddly so no different in that respect.

1gb of RAM hasn't been a limitation on the tablet either, Use it mainly for web and kodi. I'm sure the 1gb might be too little if I was running photoshop but i don't think anyone is going to run anything like that on this tablet.

People need to stop getting so worked up over 1GB of ram or windows 10 on a tablet. This is a 7 inch budget tablet. My son has the linx7 and its amazing for what it is. Browser and YouTube work fine, Minecraft windows 10 edition runs way better than on the huddle 2, video streaming is perfect and streaming from Xbox one works fine. Yes 2GB would be better, yes a faster CPU would be better and a bigger screen would be better but these are fantastic budget devices. If you need more buy a better model. I'm tempered to buy a second one at this price

Anyone have any views as to how well this would work just to stream to a Sonos. I quite like the idea of storing all my music on a device solely for this purpose. At this price and with the expandable memory it might be ideal although I would want something that started up quickly and worked snappily. Have been considering my sons old ipad mini for this purpose but he wants £100+ and storage is very limited.

Don't need it but seriously considering at this price. Can't imagine windows being that great on a tablet though

It's a rebadged Linx 7, which sells for double this...

Windows 10 runs pretty smooth on 1gb ran tbh. It will struggle with multitasking but if your sensible, it's fine

Anyone know what these are like running kodi
grahamridge1968

I did try before midnight. I have emailed to ask why
Magister
31 Oct 15 1 #11
Ah well, all the codes expired at midnight anyway. I read somewhere that the codes are limited to the first 750 orders. If that's so, it's a pity this isn't flagged when you get to the checkout page so that you're saved a lot of faffing about. Bad PR Rakuten, very bad.
Magister

Can anyone confirm that the voucher code works. It takes 10% off on the checkout page, and the next page then says "Please enter a valid voucher code and try again."

Rakuten are also offering the B grade at £34.99 less 10% less anything else you can get via Quidco 3.5% or TCB

Where do you get 32GB/2GB from? They are 32GB/1GB.

£36.99 less 10% is cheaper than £34.99 and that's before we take into account TCB and Rakuten points.
Plus... the Rakuten one is grade A whereas the one's you've linked to are grade B.

Hot. £33.29 delivered via Rakuten using code OCTPAYDAY3. The actual supplier is the same whether you use Ebay or Rakuten.
