They are usually held in place by the rubber seal when the car door is closed - this distorts the rubber and it became noisy on my car at speed - though did not leak rain

You've confused my want to warm the interior to warming the engine!
In the winter months with ice and snow a very tiny price in extra fuel and emissions is something I'm willing to pay.
That article is quite a bit off the mark btw, no taking into account even the basics such as engine technology and fully synthetic oil vs crude oil of the past.

still a pretty silly way of warming a car up as its not good for the engine to be idling when ice cold.
None of the neighbours are close enough to see or hear the car.
Very presumptuous of you to think I'd be that inconsiderate!

I use a large piece of cardboard, which seems to work great

Strange no one has mentioned that it's a bit smaller in size. Would have been great if it had been larger by 5 inches or so, vertically and horizontally. Frost will accumulate at the base of the wipers. Bought these last year from aldi but still had to use an old large cloth sheet on a 3 series bmw

I've started running out 5-10mins earlier to start the car. Nice and toasty by the time I get in it to go.
