Found a cheap price for a new, high spec Lexus IS sport hybrid, combines a 2.5 litre petrol engine with a 141 BHP electric motor!
Very good reviews for this car, and unlike some of its german equivalents comes with a high standard spec including sat nav, rear cameras, 18inch wheels, Heated seats, LED lights, digital radio etc etc. Claimed MPG is 60.1.
Good alternative to the BMW 335d deal I posted a month ago. Looks the business imo.
1 Year old equivalents are circa £23k on Autotrader, RRP is £30,000

It's not a plug in hybrid , the motor works in conjunction with the 2.5 litre petrol engine which kicks in at circa 30mph . Recharges through engine overrun and braking etc .Granted it won't go far in EV mod in city traffic but if like most cities you struggle to average jogging pace it's not too bad . I agree most hybrids are still playing at it but in 5 to 10 years time with the new emission regs they will be as common as diesels are now

It's a nice motor and a great price so I'll give it heat.
However....as someone that wants their next car to be both reasonably nippy and environmentally friendly this car doesn't quite hit the mark.
To be fair though most hybrids don't, in my opinion. Many give you an electric range of about 25-30 miles and then you're onto the black stuff from hereon in. For the miles I'm doing that'd mean charging the battery twice a day. Not practical.
The other minor detail is its emissions rating is higher than ideal for a hybrid and means the BIK value isn't much more favourable than my Euro 6 engined Mazda 6. Roll on the day we can get an electric Tesla for sub £30k with a range of 300 miles
Still a nice looking motor this Lexus and it's heading in the right direction.
I doubt it. I don't do mega miles and I'm considering a V10 for my next car. Demand will always exist for performance vehicles, if they get more efficient then all the better. BMWs are common to be fair because most of them are very good. The XE however is the car I would pick in this segment.

I really loved the look of this car. Took a test drive but wasn't really impressed with the handling nor the quality of the interior "plastics" (At the RRP price point at the time) but apart from some of the materials loved the layout and look. Now someone shoot me but listen first! I really liked the look of the Infiniti G35 from website pictures looked to be nicer interior quality price at the time was favouring the Infiniti now my big but. Never got to see nor drive one in the flesh as they pulled from franchised dealerships to own leaving N.Ireland with no dealers (took abit of reading to find out why none in N.Ireland when I knew before we did have one). Lexus is a petrol, 320d is a diesel.
Most diesels will beat hybrids, which is a whole other issue. I had a diesel Clio that I could get to do over 80mpg. Is that more or less eco than a hybrid filled with lithium batteries?
Big argument about how accurate and honest mpg figures are anyway. If the Lexus does 60mpg is that better or worse or just more honest than the 156mpg Mitsubishi claim for their petrol hybrid PHEV
just spotted that too - seems a low offering for a high spec "Seats - Part-leather, black"

My point exactly, this isn't a sports car. It's exactly the same engine as the basic SE model. The F Sport tag is just badging for people who are bothered about looks. The 0-60 time or BHP isn't the selling point, Its MPG and Hybrid engine is. The reason I didn't achieve the claimed mileage is because I have a heavy right foot, my car before the IS was a GT86 and going into a CVT requires a change of driving style. As someone else said up to about 35mph in Sport mode, this will beat anything at the lights, maybe they should put the 0-35 time in the specs
And yes, it has a little switch in which plays fake engine noise into the cabin for people who are confused when they find they are driving a silent car.

Fatboy40 to a8smith
13 Nov 15#42
I'm assuming this is down to the CVT transmission (I didn't know that Lexus used them, see an earlier post), as it seems top end is always compromised with them. However from a standing start they're brilliant, you'll blow most things away from traffic lights as there's no change from 1st to 2nd with a CVT box :-) (just plant your foot down and watch angry faces in your rear view mirror).
a8smith
13 Nov 152#41
Actually, a lot of people. If they didn't then why would any slightly performance car exist?
But I wasn't judging the car, I was expressing my surprise at a car with a 2.5l petrol engine coupled to a 143bhp electric engine only doing 60mph in 8.3 seconds. The new Audi A4 with a 1.4l petrol engine does 60mph in 8.7 seconds and gets similar fuel economy, the 2.0l petrol does 60mph in 7.3 seconds and claims a combined 59mpg.
So what is the point of this configuration? It is neither sporty or frugal (by your own admission you only averaged 40mpg, which any modern petrol car matches or betters).

I drove am older IS220D around 5 years ago and the interior was great, as were the gadgets in the car, but the drive was pretty awful. Has the new one improved much? The sub 100 g/km versions of this car are great company car buys. As someone else mentioned, getting around the 50mpg mark is typical if you have a mixed commute based on some of the reviews I've seen. Voted hot as second hand prices don't seem significantly better than this.

I had the F Sport last year through work scheme and it's a lovely car, I agreed not worth buying new as I was offered a lower spec 1 year old one for £19,000. The car itself has all the gadget you would expect and full electric seats. It even move back when you turn the engine off to make it easier for you to get out. Being a hybrid it will take getting used to even if you already have an auto. The gearbox is CVT so needs to been driven smoothly (half throttle) to get the best mpg. Slightly odd for it to have paddle shift however this is useful as "engine braking" if you don't want to lose too much momentum. The rear space and boot is huge and the sound proofing is very good. The only downside was mpg of which I averaged 40, the CT200H I changed to gives me 50, although it feels much more average.
The driving space probably is considered small if you are an elephant, however no less small than any other saloon in its class.

The main thing I dislike about BMW is they are as common as muck, I prefer to be a bit different seriously thinking of one of these to replace my XF
Except 0-60mph, of course.
The Top Trumps players going on about pointless 0-60 times need to be looking at in gear acceleration, which is actually useful for overtaking.
Very smooth ride, fairly spacious and certainly quick enough. Feels at home in busy London traffic, and even with my foot down whenever possible, fuel economy was really good. Might be tempted into one of these but just not sure its big enough for me.
The new IS 300h Sport delivers a number of sports-themed styling touches to the IS 300h in addition to a high level of standard specification, such as heated seats and Lexus Navigation.

Ok cue the guess poster drivers an Alfa and awaits the jokes! Anyhow I'll be waiting now on the Alfa Giulia!
Class leading reliability combined with award wining customer service. Heat from me.
As for the design of the car, the engine type, the marketing or wheels . That's not my field so I'm afraid you will have to ask someone else. I do however have experience of driving this model and that experience is what I have based my opinions on.
Now go back to playing Need for Speed.
Another person who can't read posts. I didn't say its based on the Mondeo, bloody hell, I said it feels like a Mondeo, its really cheap inside with an interior similar to a Mondeo, otherwise a fairly nice car, but the Lexus build and quality is vastly superior.
How can you tell whats the car is like to drive and basically make an opinion until you haven't actually driven one?
I think the styling and the interior WAY NICER then any BMW/Mercedes/Audi and its a great drive too! I had the previous IS before I got the 300h F sport and we never had to take it to a garage and it was the most reliable car i ever had! Once you own a Lexus you never have any other car!
This is a truly amazing car! And if you can afford it it's well worth to pay the extra for the Mark Lewison system as its just mind blowingly good!
I can see this idea catching on! Glad to hear Toyota/Lexus is staffed by such sharp minds as yourself
People who drive them are just saa saa sad
I have had just about every car Toyota/Lexus make.
The point of it is to transport you and up to 4 other people from point A to point B.
Odd behaviour for somebody not bothered by sports performance...
Odd choice of car for somebody who doesn't pick a car on sports performance.....
I get it, you're all show and no go......
But it's MPG is distinctly average, if not a little below, especially for it's (lack of) performance. So, again, what is the point of it?
I knew it was quick on a standing start but never knew why until now. I drive exclusively on Eco mode - apart from when I need to get past something at traffic lights, just drop into into Sport, pedal down and away you go...
And yes, it has a little switch in which plays fake engine noise into the cabin for people who are confused when they find they are driving a silent car.
Though to be honest, there's a much more commonly used collective noun for this same bunch.
:smirk:
My Skoda Superb Diesel
Maybe they should have called mine 'sport'?
The difference is in Britain its all about badge snobbery.
This is a great car for a fantastic car, to the person asking about the Jag XE, I would take the Lexus, as the XE feels like a Mondeo.
Seriously, any of the other luxury saloons in even their most basic diesel outing will beat it...and probably while getting better mpg.
Edit: I feel I should point out that this is comparable in speed to a new 318d BMW, no where near a 335d as mentioned in the OP.

My current car its the worse ever for this. I'm not a giant though and I don't live in there.
The driving space probably is considered small if you are an elephant, however no less small than any other saloon in its class.
Now a big driving area is when you lay on the sand and nobody else exists...
