This is a bargain! The airport extreme alone is £145 on apple refurbished. So for £4 you are getting a 2tb back up hard drive! £249 new from apple, £215 on amazon
I've ordered one mainly for the router as sky's wifi performance is beyond a joke.

Automatic wireless backup.
AirPort Time Capsule includes a 2TB or 3TB hard drive that works with Time Machine in OS X to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location — automatically, wirelessly, and in the background.
Ultra-fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Time Capsule gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal. And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.
Designed with performance in mind.
With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Time Capsule now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

You're welcome. Thought it worth pointing out that a refurb HD, Apple or otherwise, may be a false economy for those with precious data, photos etc.

For those of you who now have this, can it be used as an external hd or even a media server? Even with non iOS products?? Thanks

Both the 2 and 3 GB ar back in stock. Just ordered one despite some mixed reviews on the Apple site.
Be just as cheap getting a 2tb USB 3 portable hard drive and an ac56u router.
Want to take the data elsewhere? Just unplug the portable HD. Better in most scenarios.

But not if you have OSX devices in the home and want to use the backup drive for Automatic Time Machine backups.
Yes it can be done with a non Time Capsule device but only with a lot of faff...

The sky router is one of the worst out there if I could throw it in the bin I would.
masterbruce
31 Oct 15#42
No you can't. Sky really do need to update their routers. Their fibre has been perfect for the past 4months, solid connection all the time (as long as using Ethernet)

brought one of these off fleabay last week has made such a difference to the crappy sky hub i was using good tip set it up to run dual networks one 2.4ghz and the 5ghz i got around about 10mbs more speed in the bedroom upstairs on the 5ghz network than the 2,4ghz one also noticed streaming has been great with this router.

Surely you can do run dual frequencies on your sky hub?

So someone with a different opinion to your own is a troll and "stupid"? You may or not agree with my opinions on the merits of second hand/refurb hard drives but perhaps you'd like to try and be a little less offensive with your own comments in future.

This is a time capsule for automatic backups too. The 3TB AT £249 isn't worth it as a few quid more I got a new one from Amazon last year.

Stop with the trolling.
Yes you should have more than 1 back up copy. It's common knowledge. External desktop hard drive then this also backing up over wifi. No doubt you'll reply with another stupid comment.

Also, if anyone's realistically that bothered about backing up data... They seriously wouldn't be that blindsighted by backing it up on just one device anyway.
Realistically, the price of this should come with apple cloud space for essential backups. But then again, is it actually private?

So you are proposing people buy TWO refurbished drives?

Fantastic piece of kit. Sure you can get cheaper by building your own frankenstein version with cables everywhere, but that's not really the point!
Have had the 3TB version since it was released and it keeps both of my Mac's backed up, thankfully have had no cause to use it from a backup perspective.

I think this is a good deal only due to the overpriced nature of apple products. I personally would not risk anything important on a refurbished HD as others have said, and there are enough deals posted here to probably get a 3TB drive and router separately. Still, heat added for find.

Yeah you need a modem. I will turn wifi off on the sky router and use the sky unit as the modem

I have turned my home hub wifi off in the settings and use the time capsule as the router by hardwiring to the home hub. Much better signal throughout the home even though I tried multiple channels on the home hub. Bonus of auto backing up your MacBook or Imac too with zero effort. Excellent device if you can stomach the cost
