2 Nov 15#69
I had this too, but a call or email to Amex and they will credit your account £5 if the retailer doesn't accept. Some local shops in London told they they refuse to take Amex anymore due to the cost to them which is too high to pass onto the customer some stated over £2 per transaction. To be honest I do feel for them, in today's connected world I don't see why anyone, customer or retailer should have to pay for using a card.

Be careful though as last year I was told it's one per business name (per card).
That was a shame as One Stop shops are franchises with individual owners. Amex customer service is excellent though and they would probably manually add once they see the different address - a gamble though.

AMEX tell me that 'American Express Connect' is created for other Card providers in association with American Express. For example, Virgin MBNA American Express or Lloyds TSB Airmiles Duo American Express Cards. These Cards are issued and serviced by the banks and not American Express.
Therefore if you have a standard AMEX card you are excluded from this and all other Conect offers !

There will be a few irregularities.
A few years back, I ordered meals in a local pub (which was listed) and when I tried to pay by Amex, I was told they stopped taking Amex ages ago! I paid by Visa and Amex still added my £5 once I informed them. Top customer service.
I've noticed a few retailers who have actually ceased trading who are still on the list! I'm not too sure how they were added, unless they have just recently ceased trading?

Last year I was told it was one transaction per card per business name. One Stop and others that had multiple shops (same name) didn't track and I had to claim over the phone (all resolved). Might be different this year, but I suppose it would depend on tracking on the business number listed by AMEX, rather than the name. One Stop shops are generally individual franchises, so hopefully we can use more than one. We'll find out from Saturday though.
One Stop shop offers updated and may be worth considering? http://www.onestop.co.uk/offers.php
Some of the 3 for £5 chocolates may be an option.
Stella 10 x 440ml cans for that magic £10.................so £5.
Hardy's Crest and Echo Falls wines @ £5 per bottle.
Beers 3 for £5 (Singha, Cobra, Birra Moretti, Budweiser etc - large bottles 630ml - 660ml)
Some mix and match ideas?
You'll need to check to see if your local store is licensed.
Plenty of £10 packs of beers.
Daz 22 wash - £2.59
Regina 9 pack toilet rolls £2.19
Toblerone 400g - £3
Walkers crisps 30 x 25g pack - £3
So, basically half those prices again........................if you can get to that perfect £10 spend.
Good luck guys, I'm hoping to achieve a minimum of £150 back (30 x £5 rebates) across our cards.
Starting Saturday. lol

Up to 18 transactions now and have had two added due to merchants not or have never taken Amex. Strange they are listed? So, it looks like I may have only had one merchant with issues (no emails) and I'll have to wait and see what appears in the next few days.

Having some success this year, but certainly finding a lot of places have stopped (or refuse the card), or when you ask if they take it respond with "only if you have nothing else". Still if you email Amex on any place that is advertised on their list but refuses it, they usually credit you £5.

13 Dec 15#138
OneStop ideas/experience based on ~£10 spends that will of course in real terms cost you £5
* 12 x 2nd class stamps plus 6 x 1st class stamps = £10.26
* Various large bottles of beer are on 3 for £5 (so yes, you guessed, 6 for £10) E.g. Heineken 650ml, Doombar 500ml (several others). When I purchased these I was offered a free Sun newspaper (draw your own conclusions), but this is HUKD and I just mentioned something was free that would usually cost £1...sooo.....
* 5 x National Lottery Tickets or EuroMillions = £10. Fairly certain Amex can't tell what you've purchased so this doesn't have any interest applied like cash or some gambling sites would if using your card.

Anyone know of Oyster top up locations either Central London or South West London? Swear there used to be many more newsagents listed last year!
This won't reveal, though, which shops will have grumpy owners who'll lie that they don't take Amex, what extra charge they may slap on, or claim that their machine can't process Amex

Hope you lovely people have enjoyed and maxxed out on this offer.
Quick question for anyone, but last nigh a shop took a 'contactless' payment and I never received an email confirmation. No worries as they are definitely on the map, but the payment is not showing in my 'pending transactions'.
So, anyone else with experience of this? How long do 'contactless' payments take to show?
Only one other issue with one merchant and I'll chase that up today.
Quite a few shops on the map stated they don't take Amex, but I'll not be pushing that. The map needs tidying up for next year though!
I've still got another few shops to visit / re-visit (other cards) and that's it.
Lots and lots of vouchers for pubs / restaurants / butchers to use over the coming months.
Happy days.

That's normal with contactless and these offers. Just due to how contactless works. I can't remember exactly how long it takes, I think you may not get an email at all, but all should be fine.

Is this offer valid only ONCE PER CARD?
Or can use the same card at a DIFFERENT shop small merchant and it will work?
I have noticed, normally once an offer is redeemed. It shows up as "offer redeemed"in the offers section.
I used it on 6th December (plat cashback), got instant email,
Got the credit within 24 hours.
However, the offer hasn't moved to the "offer redeemed" section , like the post office or super drug ones have after redeeming?

Re: Oyster cards. Yes, there's a £90 limit per card, but you can have any number of Oyster cards. I have 6 currently, 5 of them being loaded with £90 (at a cost of £45). TFL will refund the amount on the card and the £5 deposit if you call them....
Re: Shops on the map saying they won't take Amex. Simply report it to Amex (I use secure messaging - drop-down menu of "card number", then "account management" then "terms and conditions". I find that Amex will simply credit the £5 I'd have otherwise got (so in a sense even better as it's free money without having to spend anything!). I find they'll even refund any charge that a shop may place for using an Amex card ( anything from 50p to £2 - one shop even wanted to charge me £3 when they understood I would gain £5!!!)
Re: Stuff worth buying. This can be an issue for hardened money-savers as the small shops' prices are so high that we can usually get better value elsewhere, even allowing for a 50% discount with a £10 spend....
I get Oyster top-ups, bottles of wine and cheeses from specialist shops, non-perishable staples from grocery shops, drinks in bars and the odd meal out/takeaway

Heeding your advise I have now reported a number of listed business establishments who refused to accept Amex card when I visited them. I have also reported a number of addresses where the said shops don't even exist anymore (common again, seems the map can do with some serious updating) - not sure what Amex would make of all the things being reported from both my cards - whether they will just dismiss it as a case of me trying to ask for statement credits or they will take it seriously and in the name of consumer delight actually give me the statement credits.
I will report back once Amex has responded on my complaints.
Thanks for letting us know that contacting Amex can potentially give credit back even if no charge was made on the card in the first instance

19 Dec 15#175
Same was the impression I got - not many in my area either - plus the other places that do accept Amex had a 20£ minimum spend before they would accept a card which made it a rather pointless exercise, given how usually small shops are always more expensive than the supermarket chains/bigger shops. For a statement credit of 5 spending 15£ didn't seem to make a great deal of sense.

Bottle and Basket worked for me in the previous 2 years, but this time, the man said they didn't take Amex.
I even asked him to try to card, and he said it wouldn't process (though he could have keyed anything into the machine!)
Interestingly, a shop-owner today informed me that retailers get something out of the Shop Small promotion.
He wasn't sure, but something like if they got 10 transactions under the promotion, they'd benefit from a lower charge rate.
As I have 2 cards, that's already 20% of the way there
So it makes it even more remarkable that some shops lie about not taking Amex
I have no problem at all with shops who've decided for business reasons not to take Amex.
It's those shops which have signed up for Amex services, appear on the map, and have Amex logos in their window who then say they don't take Amex, or slap on a charge, or lie that the machine doesn't work that I have a problem with

I do hope the small shops do get some sort of reward.
I spoke to one shop owner (wine shop) and he told me he did negotiate a 1.9% Amex fee. I think that's acceptable and can easily be hidden into the prices. He stated he took very little cash now and that most purchases were by card of some type.
More small shops should sign up as these promotions must generate business. I would like to have seen large posters in the participating shop windows promoting the event, though those that displayed the small shops sticker did help.
Roll on next time, I'm finished now and made my final two purchases this afternoon.
Merry Xmas to Amex, Merry Xmas to all small shops who took part, Merry Xmas to all small shoppers.

They certainly benefit from the extra sales (Amex pay out the £5 credit of course, not the shop), ad campaign and hopefully some customer loyalty for the future. I do enjoy the random places I find as part of Shop Small that I may not have noticed before. I think in previous years they had some sort of prize draw for merchants too, but I can't see info on that this year.
This year as well as the national Shop Small ad campaign they let retailers create their own free online ad - http://www.amexshopsmall.co.uk/ad-creator Has anyone noticed any of these though, I don't think I've seen any and not sure where they were buying ad space? Nice extra bonus though.

Sent emails to Amex for merchants not existing but showing on the map and also for the ones who are there but refused to accept the Cards and they ended up giving me statement credits for all those instances, so a total of 40 quid across my two cards as statement credit for the instances where I couldn't use the card when I wanted to - faultless really - don't know of anyone other bank/CC provider who would have done that. One Stop shops - some of those sell stamps.
Make sure you ask whether they take AMEX at the shop first though - some charge up to £1 and others declining even though they are listed.
I saved it today though so does that mean the offer will not be available to me or have they made a mistake with the dates?
I interpret this as
- you can sign up from now until 20 December
- the qualifying spend is from 5-20 December
That was a shame as One Stop shops are franchises with individual owners. Amex customer service is excellent though and they would probably manually add once they see the different address - a gamble though.
One of my favourite butchers isn't listed, so I've messaged them to find out if they'll be enrolling.
Used this last 2 years and saved an absolute fortune on a bar crawl around Brum. So much so we went again the following week using the Mrs' cards. 2 crawls for the price of 1. And just in time for a few Christmas pressies too...

Regina 9 pack toilet rolls £2.19
Toblerone 400g - £3
Walkers crisps 30 x 25g pack - £3
So, basically half those prices again........................if you can get to that perfect £10 spend.

Bad news, none of the two purchases made on a supplementary card (saved offer) gave an email notification! I'll give them a call, but will only use my cards until clarification is given.
Anyone else had an issue with supplementary cards?
Only 3 email confirmations from 8 transactions! On top of that, 2 x merchants who don't take AMEX and one of those never has!
Hoping the £5 credits show by Wednesday, but fear claims.
Gave up for today, might try again tomorrow.
Looks a mess at first glance / attempts.
There'll be lots and lots of manual claims I'd imagine, along with £5 credits for instances like your experience 3lj-uk.
Last year the customer services stated they hated this time of year / event. Great for small businesses, but headaches for customers and staff!
I've started a spreadsheet to keep track, but I'll still carry on..................regardless.
Looking forward to hearing more experiences, good and bad.
We've just made 3 purchases from the same merchant, 2 on my crads and 1 on the wife's supplementary card. Both mine came with notification emails (instantly), but not the wife's!
Poor service and I suspect these Small Shops ones will likely go the same route...
Up to 18 transactions now and have had two added due to merchants not or have never taken Amex. Strange they are listed? So, it looks like I may have only had one merchant with issues (no emails) and I'll have to wait and see what appears in the next few days.
I'll probably try it on Wednesday and if it works, it will give lots of extra opportunities. If it fails, I've wasted a fiver.........................but I've had 2 x £5 credits for non-Amex listed merchants..................so time to take a gamble.
Anyone living in the Edinburgh area who can recommend central bars and cafes who are participating in the shop small event? Maybe a couple of wine shops and gift shops (wife) too.

for oyster top ups they some times want 50p service charge but still nearly half price travel.

Gold Blend coffee 200g - £5 per jar - 2 jars (£10) = £5 (£2.50 per jar) once £5 credit has been added.
(wife's Xmas present sorted - lol)
I bought a book of 12 2nd class stamps today, along with other bits. Mine also sold books of 6 1st class. If wanted of course.
* 12 x 2nd class stamps plus 6 x 1st class stamps = £10.26
Seems like a very good deal - as good as a straight 50% off - can't fault it.
