There was a new update 2 days ago to OS 4.6.6 but seems to depend on your carrier if you get it, i am on BT mobile.

mine arrived a few days ago. fantastic phone in my opinion, very easy to load google play into it and then you can get every app you want. Sharp screen, great build quality, cool features. only negative I can find is the battery life could be better.

Decent phone on the face of it but Amazon's OS IS VERY restrictive, you can't even use the YouTube app for crying out loud

I got this phone (but 64GB) barely used from eBay in May for £60 - truly terrible signal with O2 network providers (texts would take days to arrive, calls were a no no) even after a brand new replacement from Amazon.
Best avoided especially if with O2.
westandal0ne to jammydav93
29 Nov 15#67
Ironically it was initially only released with O2 being the only network selling and supporting it. I had one myself but the screen packed in after 5 weeks. Just stopped working, couldn't do a thing with it, apart from that fault it's a snappy enough phone but Fire OS is really not intuitive at all. Hardware wise, yes, decent. Software lets it down.

This is a superb phone for the money, have owned for a few months now. Didn't bother rooting as I only use popular apps but good to know it can be done if needbe. I think the only reason these phones 'failed' commercially is that Amazon pitched the launch price too high. As has been said great battery life, crystal clear screen, tons of memory, only annoying aspect is the silly 3d graphics but you can turn these off really easily

Avoid this company, they have no customer service what so ever.

This phone is terrible. The 3d effect is cool, but it is a mere gimmick being under utilized. It can be quite difficult to use, things are frustrating and it should be designed much better. It may suit you if you are used to the amazon fire tablet though. Much better phones at a similar price out there.

I have owned one for 4 months - good phone but no sign of new operating system being released to support it - 5.0. At least with android or iOS you get continued support

BUT I wanted an Amazon Fire (the £50 7" tablet) for my mum, but without all the Amazon-centric stuff. I had a new launcher on it, and Google Play and Google services within literally 30 minutes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485
It didn't say it was for android novices! I am sure there are equivalent pages for the Fire Phone.
Probably a stupid question, but is this Android or a custom OS?
umataro to jamesianmoore
26 Nov 15#55
this is not the droid you're looking for...
it is called FireOS; a heavily customised android without google apps or any connection to google's ecosystem. their tablets and phone are simply a window through which you can throw money at amazon. it is their only purpose.

Got one of these phones when amazon were getting rid of stock. For the specs, the price is actually quite good ( I got the 64gb version for £99). Anyways, ran into some trouble with my fire phone yesterday, used the mayday app and since it couldn't be fixed I have a new phone landing on my door today!
It has been discontinued, but Amazon still have some set aside for existing customers if they need to be replaced for whatever reason.

For the doubters... look up the specs for this phone - it is very hard to find anything near it for the price. The battery lasts a good 2 days for me, I have the Play store on mine and it runs happily the Google Now launcher. The camera is good at 13mp and I have masses of storage on mine for all my music and films. The twin speakers are a bit feeble - but the bundled magnetic, flat earphones are really pretty decent. Add in Amazon CS and I don't think anything comes too close. Hot.

The usual ignorant comments from people with absolutely no real life experience of the phone. I bought one at £99 from Amazon a while ago and for the money it is an excellent, reliable phone. Anyone even considering purchasing should ignore the idiots and take the plunge. Excellent value at under £100. I use mine as a back up to an iPhone 6 and it compares very well. Great screen and battery life (when you turn off the 3d nonsense)

thing is though most new phones are over 5 inches in size which for me is too big. getting a snapdragon 800 with 2gb ram for a hundred notes just isn't possible and the camera in this is pretty good, far better than any budget phone
