This game never gets old! It's had steady updates and bug fixes from a large community of players ever since Microsoft released the last official patch for it - many of these updates were incorporated into the xOmicron user patch, which effectively turns the original version of the game (if you still have it) into the HD Edition. Releasing it on Steam was kind of a no-brainer - now it's easily accessible, runs really well and has a lot of active players and amazing Steam workshop support. Getting a new, official expansion pack (The Forgotten/Forgotten Empires) was a bit of a surprise after so many years - and then another new expansion pack (African Kingdoms) just came out yesterday! So as if there wasn't enough to get out of the base game + Conquerors expansion, there are two modern expansions, plus all the mods, plus all the multiplayer you can handle. With a community that's more active than ever before, you can bet that there's at least another 15 years of life in this game!
The first Settles had me addicted for months on end, I remember playing that split screen on the Amiga 500 with my brother using two mice.
We even managed to hook that up to the VCR to record our gameplay, 20 some years before Twitch became a thing
Likewise when we got a PC I think we both played the AOE demo to death as it was included on the disc of the first PC magazine I ever got. Needless to say months later when we finally got the full game that got so much play time.
I remember playing online games with dial-up that disconnected every two hours, I had to ensure I had just connected to the internet before playing a game to ensure it didn't disconnect half way though a game. Some good memories!

£2.99 IS a lot of money for some people. It's easy to judge. Perhaps he has just had his benefits stopped, or his toilet cleaning job doesn't pay too well. Perhaps he's lost his paper round because of the decline of the newspaper industry?

Great price, it's a lot of play time for your money. Countless hours playing this year's ago, the multiplayer aspect was a laugh on the zone
Custom taunts and maps.
This and total annihilation I highly recommend.

Are we really that bad... people will essentially steal a game for less than £3... I spent more than that on my lunch
P.S I own the original game.... and still bought this just for the Steam integration.. this is an amazing game and to say it hasn't aged well?? This game was ahead of its time and i'd play it now.
If anyone wants any information just ask, but if you wanna steal it then feel free but sometimes you gotta support the people who develop these games, if everyone stole they'd be very little game developers left.

Definately, the AI takes some beating and the campaigns are great fun too. Plenty of maps and civs to keep you busy but to have the most fun, do go online.

Wish this was for mac. One of my favourite PC games
We can always use more british players in this game, so join up :P! There are tourneys going left and right in the other platforms (non-steam). Most recently a group of players even went to the Maldives to play out the finals of a tournament.
Might take a year to get decently competitive at this game though, but the road to learn the game is so enjoyable and rewarding.

Imho, 3 is a good game, but is nowhere near the same enjoyment of gameplay as 2.
Our of interest, did you play 1 & 2 when they first came out?

Wait what? Stealing a car is the same as stealing a game? You can download other peoples cars now? No way that's awesome!
But seriously people who think stealing a physical object is the same as pirating a game or downloading music illegally need to get a grip. They're two very different things, what i would agree Is they're both morally wrong.
There's been plenty of research done on this subject and these days I'd hope anyone who ever has or does still illegally download will actually buy the game and support the developers if they enjoy it. Just look at the batman refunds being offered, do you think the people who pirated that game are sorry?

I agree with everything you have just said. I was making a point. Some plonker coming onto HUKD game section to say "U can just download it from the internet."
You can download every single game. Regardless of the age of it. We dont need people like that here, we have enough trolls.
P.S I didnt say they were the same, I just listed the common things posted on this site.

I'd disagree, the game is 16 years old, probably older than some of the members on here.
All things considered it looks fine and the gameplay is still fantastic. This has just been updated to support modern screen resolutions and online services, that been Steam in place of MSN gaming zone.

Absolutely loved this game the first time around but I'd want to play it for the multiplayer. I've read in some of the steam reviews that it crashes a lot? Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there plenty of people still playing it online?
Many thanks in advance.

Jesus, take you to be a hungry so and so not spending 2.99 on a good game.
Manic Miner
Banjo Kazooie 1 &2 (for Nintendo)
Settlers
Age of Empires
Must admit I enjoyed AOE1 over AOE2 even though the latter had better graphics and gameplay.
AOE3 was once 10p on here
