Passing through Bristol airport yesterday and Dixons travel were offering £50 off the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, all colours and capacities. They seemed to have plenty of stock and said it was available nationwide to all travellers.

Not for everyone but handy if you want one

Isn't this back to the argument of showing boarding pass info and these companies claiming the VAT 20%, 20% VAT off would give a price of £449 not £489, so they are making an additional £40 profit over the regular DSG/Carphone Warehouse price of £539 sim free.

And this is after been told to pass savings on to travellers.

They can only claim the vat back if it was a flight outside the EU.
Also when you enter the country with it, are you not supposed to declare it as there is a limit to tax free electronics.
So this price is available to all shoppers and as you aren't seen to not pay Vat you don't get stung with it either.

Also when Dixons was Tax Free. You always paid VAT but the prices appears to be the normal cost less the VAT.

Be very careful which SIM you first use as using a foreign networks during your holiday could be very costly if the iPhone then auto-locks to that network.

How do you unlock following the autolock? Presumably via. network provider? If so, will they try to charge for it even though it's been bought simfree?

Is says there. The top 'Usage' is screen on time. The bottom is Standby. So the poster is getting around 9+ hours usage time.
disneyprincessxo

The battery is not poor at all.
ajavaid92
31 Oct 15 #25
I'm pretty sure "usage" is not screen on time. It's just the time period during which the phone was not in "deep sleep" or "standby". So an example may include listening to music with your headphones on and the screen off. This would be classed as "usage", but not the "screen on time" that I'm after.

Many of the well-renowned phones for battery such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 would only manage 4-5 hours screen on time. It's impossible for the iPhone to get anywhere near 5 hours, let alone 8+ hours.

Do me a favour. Go and find out what size of object the human eye can resolve down to. Then find out the pixel size on an iPhone 6s screen.

Why should I buy iphone when much more features, capabilities and premium look I can get it for less price ??
I bought my first iphone as iphone 3Gs with 16GB memory in year 2009 still they are selling as 16GB can't believe!
lowest camera in the world for price, Maximum body with less screen, NO SD slot, NO removable battery, Same old keyboard option, NO themes, NO Launcher, Same color scheme throught the lifetime, Same Camera apps, No true file manager, NO FM Radio, NO Google map Navigation, NO wireless charger, No waterproof

Android = Unlimited possibility, iphone = ???

and BTW £619 for 64 GB for poor battery life than many androids and still not the best camera in the smartphone

The NAND performance of the iPhone 6S is nuts. It wastes even the Samsung Galaxy S6 which uses UFS (however the random write isn't as good) other phones use eMMC. The iPhone 6S is using NVMe which you get in higher end desktop computers these days. It's not on the same speed level though.

I own a Galaxy S6 so I'm not biased here's some pros to the iPhone 6S.

1. Excellent NAND storage performance.
2. Forcetouch, which really comes in to its own with a Jailbreak.
3. Walled garden - Far less security issues than rival platforms.
4. Optimisation - Apple make the software and hardware, they only have had to cater for 12 iPhones so far.
5. What you see is what you get, ease of use.

Some of the above apply to Windows Phone as well. Android is leagues ahead in terms of customisation and right at the bottom of the pile for optimisation.
amgpower62
31 Oct 15 #34
Wow... Just wow. So many untrue statements here.

The camera is on-par with all other high-end android flagships. There is nothing wrong with it. Last year iPhone 6 came 1st in camera performance.

Do Samsung phones come with SD slots and removable batteries these days? No... A lot of android phones are stopping this trend.

You an now change the keyboard to whatever you wish as of 1 year ago.

FM radio? What are you 50 years old? Oops you might be.

There is Google Maps, Waze, Apple, Tomtom and more...

The most recent iPhone is now very water resistant.

The only thing lacking is true customisation like themes etc, but tbh it's a phone and all I need it to do is make calls and send texts etc. don't need it looking fancy.

1. No-one cares.
1.1 Can you add your own storage?
2. I have not experienced this but Jailbreaking an iPhone opens it up to a whole new world of malware.
3. It has been proven time and time again that malware makes it into the app store.
3.1 So there's less competition in the App Store vs Play Store and prices are higher? Who would have thought?
4. Meh, so Apple can save costs buy not putting as much RAM into their phones.
4.1 Are these cost savings passed onto the end user?
5. This last point is just rubbish. An iPhone isn't any simpler to use than any other smartphone. I've seen plenty of people upgrading from one iPhone to the next over years losing data, because they don't understand the backup and restore mechanisms. People may say it's simpler because it's all they've known but it's not an intuitive affair for first time iPhone users.

still the nearly £600 for 64 GB memory I never used in my life and BTW I'm IT guy , price is not justify for what you paid, I'm using Huawei Honor 7 I bought for 209£ with 3 years warranty with 20MP SONY sensor back camera, 8 MP front camera with flash, words fastest fingerprint reader, dual sim and micro SD slot and premium real metal body, duel antenna design so it can change the bands without dropping calls and hold much better signal than iPhone, 4G, work with gloves, much better battery life, local sales and support now, how can you defend iPhone now? and BTW 5.2" screen

check your knowledge mate see dxo mark, iPhone is not bad but not on per or even comparable with just 8mp camera, and don't tell me mp is not everything or quality, when you you need to zoom something and check detail like words from signboard or crop something its not possible because of 8mp and lots of manufacturer still offer and will offering SD slot and removable battery, I know my phone is not the best but I'm 100% satisfied for the price I paid which is really reasonable and don't feel like cheated

1. No one cares about performance from their smartphone? Really? They don't mind lag etc?
2. Forcetouch is useful without jailbreaking
3. Far less security issues, means what it says, rather than meaning it's impossible to get malware
4. Yes. Apple should have a minimum storage of 32GB.
5. You didn't understand the point. Use a HTC, Samsung, LG and Nexus Android phones, they all use different launchers, they all have variant UI's. Apple has one UI, it's skill transferable between Apple devices, it's definitely simpler than Android.

You cherry pick what you what to disagree with. For example you negate to mention any negatives of optimisation, because their aren't any. Optimisation is the strongest point of any Apple device, because they control the software and hardware. My post is obviously unbiased, I've stated I use an Android phone. I've given what I believe to be a fair appraisal of the IOS platform, without bias. I really like and use all mobile platforms as it's an area I work in and give advice to people when choosing platforms.

One tip though, if you ever go in to journalism, don't use the word meh.

NAND storage has nothing to do with 'lag', maybe you should learn the difference between memory for storage and Random Access Memory. I've nothing against software optimised for hardware but one way around not having this is just to bung in more RAM to cater for bloated software, which Android phones do and are still cheaper. Different launchers all function in much the same way, it's an added layer of customisation so you can make your phone more the way you want it to be. Once you've used one you can use any. In much the same way as iPhones. Thanks for the tip on journalism but it's not something that has ever crossed my mind. However I would have thought there'd be a publisher and a market for people who don't mind the word meh.

That's not a valid response. I'm advocating smartphones that not only work but have greater capabilities than iPhones for a lesser price. The only argument that Apple once had going for them (which no-one has mentioned here) is that their phones (with some notable exceptions) were well designed hardware that were arguably prettier to look at than others. This is no longer the case.

I think it's hilarious the amount of Android phone users that are compelled to comment on these iPhones deals. Are you just trying to convince and reassure yourself that you have the right phone? Some people just prefer Apple and want iOS. Not everybody wants Gaydroid. Get over it.
fishmaster
2 Nov 15 #50
The speed of NAND in a phone has nothing to do with lag, of course it does. Looking at lag at a whole you'd need to consider chipset, ram and storage I/O (NAND).

One of the real benefits of iPhones is the optimisation, the hardware and software are both controlled by Apple, there's only been 12 iPhones. Android has to cater for thousands of varying hardware. Like I say I'm not biased I don't own an iPhone.

To be honest iPhone + Android handsets have pros and cons!!!...I prefer the usability and ease of use on the iPhone along with never had an issue with virus's, However saying that I like the way android handsets allow you to have more flexibility with settings etc!!...for the record I buy my handsets outright solely because for me it's cheaper that way in the long run yet respect the fact not all are in a position to do that!!!

Brownbloke11
23 Nov 15 #57
No such thing really as tax free for EU shoppers, so the stores in airports just offer a discount. For those leaving the UK, they should be able to reclaim VAT I think so perhaps get a better deal if they shop in the high street and claim the VAT back - just look at the queues in the airport tax queue some days outside T3 at Heathrow. When I worked in retail, the stores could save money if exporting products that had an anti-dumping levy applied to them as they didn't pay this if the product was exported outside of the EU, and they didn't pass that saving on to the consumer. I generally avoid airport shops as most times you can get a better deal on the internet. If you are exporting to the EU and then coming back there is no need (I believe) to declare the item as you have actually paid tax (VAT) on it anyway. If you bought an item in a non-EU country then you would need to declare it if the value exceeds the allowed limit of a few hundred pounds (see Customs website) in the same way you would for fags and booze.
