How does the cat get it to dispense food? Is there a lever it pushes or something?

Gravity my friend, as food is taken from the bottom it is topped up from the holder, the one shown is the water dispenser, which acts in a slightly different way as the vacuum in the water tank "holds" the water until the drinking level in the cup drops and lets a little air in so allowing the water to flow out until the outlet is covered again so stopping the air ingress.
PS had one for well over a year, my cat drinks from it regularly, and it hasnt split leaked or broken, you also get a reassuring gulg gulg as the cat takes a drink,
this is ok for cats and small lap dogs as it only holds about 2 litre and the drinking cup is quite small but it doesnt stop my lurcher and German wire-haired pointer having a sup from it

Cats can definately over-eat. Mine does. Despite being given no cereal dry food (applaws) and no human food, he definately over eats if left to his own devices. And he's very active in the garden!

Well it sounds like you have nearly a handful of datapoints between you. Surely thats enough to make definitive statements about all cats everywhere.

Well, my girlfriend's Mum has one of these and her cat is overweight. I can see merit in intelligent feeders that control portion size and timing, but a simple feeder like this could easily lead to obesity. Perhaps your cats have a fast metabolism and/or get lots of exercise, but an indoors-only cat and one of these feeders would be a perfect recipe for an obese pet.
Good idea for water, but not for food... encourages obesity. Animals will over-eat if left to their own devices.

Not true. Cats dont tend to overeat. I have something similar to this for dry food and the cats just take what they want. I have two happy moggies that are not fat in the least. Some dogs I know would carry on eating until they popped though!

I have one of these, the water doesn't flow out it stops at the level of the bowl section as it is supposed to. Handy for a cat that likes to drink and a teenager that hates doing anything - ie filling up a normal water bowl!

We got one of these and their brilliant, just fill up the top and it keeps dispensing food. It is funny watching the kids eat from them, sometimes the animals get to have some too

the post is not quite correct, it is not either food or water they sell two different types, one for water one for food, maybe why some are not finding them useful

I bought this EXACT model for the same price about 6 months ago from HB. I thought it would be handy during the summer (my dog LOVES his water!). Seeing the price of £2.99, I bought it without really looking at it....my mistake obvs, but it wasn't until I got it home and tried to use it, that I realised just how poor the quality of it was....It doesn't 'dispense' like it's meant to at all - It leaks if you want to use it for water, and cracked/split just trying to getting to do that. I didn't get around to trying it with food but can't imagine how it would handle that!? Only my opinion, based on experience, but I'd recommend saving your pennies & either going without or investing in a 'Good Quality' Pet Food/Water Dispenser...HTH's

I have one of these and I really don't understand how it's supposed to dispense water. There are no valves or anything. If you fill the tank with water and attach it to this, it'll just pour straight out. It's fine for food though.

Should be as I have seen them in quite a few stores in North Tyneside and it's a regular line they have all of the time.
